Frontier Girl Scouts Records

Abstract

The collection consists of records of the Frontier Girl Scouts Council (FGSC) dating from 1944 until 1999. The majority of the collection dates from 1990 to 1999. It contains annual reports and publications of the FGSC, committee minutes and agenda, troop financial records, membership data, and leader training records. It also includes correspondence and publications of the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA).

Abstract

This collection is comprised of research files dating from approximately 1980 to 2021 created by Boulder City Nevadan, Dennis McBride, primarily in support of his book, Out of the Neon Closet: A History of Gay Las Vegas on the history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, gay, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community in Southern Nevada. Materials in this collection also include ephemera and clippings documenting LGBTQ establishments and organizations in Las Vegas, biographies of individuals, and other issues pertinent to the LGBTQ community. This collection also includes some materials about the LGBTQ community and their issues in Northern Nevada. The collection represents McBride's overall efforts to document and preserve the history of the LGBTQ community in Nevada.

Penelope Ruchman Collection of Las Vegas, Nevada Casino Professionals Oral Histories

Abstract

The Penelope Ruchman Collection of Las Vegas, Nevada Casino Professionals Oral Histories includes interviews conducted by Ruchman from approximately 1999 to 2001 of casino industry workers who worked in Las Vegas, Nevada. The majority of interviews were conducted by Ruchman in their office at Gambler's Book Shop (GBS), but some where conducted in interviewee's homes and offices, or over the phone. The collection represents Ruchman's efforts to interview and document a generation of early casino industry workers that were quickly aging. The project was intended to be compiled as a definitive history of Las Vegas and American gambling, entitled "After the Gold Rush." The project was permanently postponed in the fall of 2001 when Ruchman left GBS to work for Park Place Entertainment as a corporate business and operations analyst, and later as casino operations director for Caesars Palace. Not all interviews have digital transcripts available.

The Production Company Audiovisual Collection consists of commercials, advertising, and political campaigns from approximately 1965 to 1995 created by The Production Company, a television production company founded by Thomas “Bob” Patrick in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection consists of primarily 16 mm film and video formats such as VHS, U-Matic, Betacam, open reel, Type C, and quadruplex. The videotapes and films in this collection represent advertising and marketing for hotels and casinos, entertainment companies, politicians, and local businesses located in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Abstract

The UNLV TV Audiovisual Collection (1980-2023) is comprised of recordings of television programs produced by UNLV TV, a media production facility housed within the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The collection includes samples of various television programs which include special events, lectures, interviews with prominent speakers and visitors at UNLV, and campus and community related B-roll footage.

Abstract

The Lloyd Gill Photograph Collection (1979) consists of reproduction black-and-white photographic prints and negatives of images Gill took in Las Vegas, Nevada from approximately 1960 to 1969. The images depict black residents' experiences at Las Vegas hotels, casinos, and nightclubs in the predominantly black West Las Vegas. Locations include the Carver House Hotel and Casino, the El Rio Club, Town Tavern, the Cove Hotel, and the Brown Derby Club.

Don T. Walker Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Don T. Walker Photograph Collection (1900-1995) is comprised of black-and-white and color photographs taken by or belonging to Las Vegas photographer and Nevada historian Don Travis Walker. The photographs taken by Walker include ghost towns in Nevada, Arizona, and California, as well as a series on Phil Benson, editor and publisher of the Southern Nevada Times. Other items in the collection include photographs taken by other people related to the Moulin Rouge Hotel in Las Vegas, various photographs of historic sites in Nevada, and a program from the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society for its "Moulin Rouge: History in the Making" exhibition.

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Regional History Files (approximately 1855-2020) represent a wide variety of subjects relating to Las Vegas, Nevada and the surrounding region. Materials include physical and scanned newspaper clippings, documents and fliers, brochures, reports, scanned photographs, and website printouts. The files include information about national organizations with local Nevada chapters, prominent individuals and families, popular locations, and general topics relating to Southern Nevada history.

The Mike Smith Editorial Cartoons (1980-2023) contain editorial cartoons created by Las Vegas, Nevada based cartoonist Mike Smith for the Las Vegas Sun newspaper. Materials include Smith's editorial cartoons on NASCAR and a copy of his 2003 book StockcarToons. The collection also includes Smith's personal sketchbooks and letters from fans.

Abstract

The Kenny Kerr Papers (approximately 1973-2013) contain audiovisual materials, photographs, newspaper clippings, and ephemera that document the career of Las Vegas, Nevada female impersonator Kenny Kerr. The majority of the collection includes recordings of Kerr's performances, including his impersonation revue show This is Boy-Lesque. Audiovisual materials in this collection represent Kerr's performances in Las Vegas as well as around the United States, music used for Boy-Lesque, and an audiocassette recording of Kerr's song, "Uncle Sam Wants You." Other materials in this collection include Kerr's professional headshots and Boy-Lesque show ephemera such as performance tickets and show programs. Also included are professional and candid photographs of Kerr's performances and with other performers.The collection also includes a 2012 digital video recording of UnBOYlievable starring female impersonator Jimmy Emerson at the Riverside Resort in Laughlin, Nevada, fourteen songs from Kerr's album "Songs From the Heart," and digital scans of the photographs in the collection.
