Abstract

Oral history interview with John Cahlan conducted by James Weslowski on April 10, 1978 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Cahlan discusses his memory of the beginning of Nellis Air Force Base, originally named the Las Vegas Aerial Gunnery School for the Army Air Corps. He also discusses the role of the city commissioners in establishing Nellis as a permanent airbase, as well as the role of Western Air Express, a commercial air company which eventually became Western Airlines.

In his interview, John Cahlan discusses the beginnings of Las Vegas, Nevada, including the role of the Union Pacific Railroad and its need for water. Cahlan also discusses the changes in Las Vegas over time, including the evolution of the Western Air Express station to Nellis Air Force Base, as well as his concerns for the future of Las Vegas.

Cahlan discusses the Nevada Test Site and the role of Basic Magnesium for the atomic testing. Cahlan additionally discusses the image of Las Vegas, Nevada as the entertainment capital of the world and the work of journalism in shifting the image to the recreational aspects of the area, such as Lake Mead and Mount Charleston.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Felicia Campbell conducted by Kendra Gage on June 28, 2012 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Campbell discusses her career in education and her advocacy for equal pay for women employees of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She begins by briefly discussing her family history and her education before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1962 to take a professorship at the newly established University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Campbell describes discovering the disparities between the salaries of female professors and male professors, organizing the women faculty on campus, establishing the Women's Caucus, and the litigation she faced from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Campbell also talks about her travels, other issues as they relate to labor and women's rights, and founding the first chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW) in Las Vegas.

The Eileen Margaret Green Photograph Collection (approximately 1987) consists of photographs and a negative of rock art sites in Southern Nevada taken by Eileen Margaret Green, a former anthropology student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Eileen used the photographs in her 1987 master’s thesis, “A Cultural Ecological Approach to the Rock Art of Southern Nevada.”

The Southern Nevada Historical Society Photograph Collection on Basic Magnesium, Inc. contains photographs of the construction of Basic Magnesium Inc.'s plants and buildings from 1941 to 1942. The photographs primarily depict aerial views of the plant site and various buildings, including the administration building, tent camp, chlorination buildings, electrolysis facilities, electrical distribution systems, and warehouses. The photographs also depict Lake Mead and the early buildings in Henderson, Nevada.

The Erle A. Taylor Photograph Collection (1959-1977) consists of photographic prints, slides, and negatives pertaining primarily to aviation in Nevada. The collection includes images of the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, McCarran International Airport, vintage airplanes, air shows, and assorted events and people, including Richard M. Nixon, Gerald Ford, Betty Ford, and Jack Nicklaus. Erle A. Taylor served as the aviation director for Clark County, Nevada throughout the 1970s.
