The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Health and Physical Education Records (1957-1997) is comprised of University of Nevada, Las Vegas records primarily dealing with the reorganization of departments from 1994-1997. Materials include national studies, internal memos, newspaper articles, public correspondences, and histories of the university, relevant departments, and professors.

Abstract

The Women's Research Institute of Nevada Records (1997-2017) document the establishment and activities of the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The majority of the collection represents research files, correspondence, and other working files kept by Joanne Goodwin, professor of history at UNLV and executive director of WRIN from 1999 to 2017. Materials include information about the creation of WRIN as well as its partnership with the National Education for Women's Leadership program to create NEW Leadership Nevada. Digital files in this collection include WRIN and NEW Leadership event photographs and administrative files used for WRIN operations. Digital files also include copies of annual reports and WRIN newsletters. Also included is a copy of Looking Back at Nevada Women, a documentary hosted by Goodwin. The records provide information on the creation of WRIN and the activities, events, and day to day operations of the institute including information on obtaining and maintaining funding for a research institute.

Abstract

Records are comprised of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Women’s Council memoranda, communications, newspaper clippings, and planning documents from 1993 to 2012. The collection includes information primarily about the Committee for an Inclusive and Just University (CIJU). The CIJU materials include planning documents for multiple surveys including: campus climate surveys, status of women, campus culture, and campus environment.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Rodrigo Vazquez conducted by Nathalie Martinez and Barbara Tabach on May 24, 2021 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project.

Rodrigo was raised in a mixed status Mexican family. He was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States at the age of three, later becoming a citizen when he was in the 8th grade. Rodrigo is currently a graduate student worker for the Latinx Voices Oral History Project and reflects on what he has learned. He also discusses what the past year of the Coronavirus pandemic has been like for him.

Oral history interview with Lawrence Chiu Hill oral history interview conducted by Cecilia Winchell, Nessa Concepcion, and Stefani Evans on November 8, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. Lawrence "Larry" Chiu Hill shares his experiences growing up in Taiwan and immigrating with his family to South America, then moving to Corpus Christi, Texas, and finally Las Vegas, Nevada. He discusses his education at University of Nevada, Las Vegas as a Political Science graduate and his career path moving from casino gaming into the practice of law. Lawrence manages his own firm, Lawrence C. Hill and Associates, and talks about his work, his family, and the community he has created in over two decades of living in Las Vegas.

Oral history interview with Junior Fonotisatele conducted by Cecilia Winchell and Stefani Evans on November 10, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. Junior discusses his Samoan background and the importance of strong family values. He talks about his early years in Utah and California before moving to Las Vegas where he attended and graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Junior shares his employment history as a bodyguard for Floyd Mayweather, an entrepreneur of a clothing brand, and an investor into a range of ventures including security, solar energy, and mental health. He concludes with a discussion of Samoan cultural celebrations, his religion, and the significance of his tattoos.

Oral history interview with Rayshawn Williams conducted by Barbara Tabach on November 11, 2021 for the Veterans Oral History Project of Southern Nevada.

Native Las Vegan Rayshawn Williams discusses his service in the United States Marine Corps and his tours as a field radio operator in Iraq. He also shares stories of being in boot camp during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Rayshawn talks about his graduate studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and his university employment through the TRIO Training Institute programs (Talent Search, Upward Bound, and Student Support Service).

Oral history interview with Nathalie Martinez conducted by Rodrigo Vazquez and Barbara Tabach on June 24, 2021 for Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project.

Nathalie Martinez, one of the original members of the Latinx Voices project team, dicusses her personal history and the history of her parents who immigrated to the United States from Colombia and El Salvador. She shares her educational background and experiences working as an interviewer for the Latinx Voices project before its culmination and her graduation in 2021. Nathalie also talks about her work on the project's podcast and her work linguistically translating the interviews from Spanish to English.

She talks about her education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, her passion for the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community within Las Vegas, and her roles in community activism and leadership. Jean also shares her current pursuits as a podcaster of Bruha Baddies, co-owner and printer of Plot Twist Publishing, and co-founder of the Comic and Zines Festival.

Oral history interview with Ropchai, Somphool, Sakulrat, Puonyarat, and Rutt Premsrirut conducted by Cecilia Winchell and Stefani Evans on November 23, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. The Premsrirut family takes turns sharing their personal and professional histories and what brought them to Las Vegas, Nevada. Father Ropchai discusses his educational background and how he came to be an Economics Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas after growing up in Nong Khai, Thailand. Mother Somphool, born in the same town in Thailand, shares her path in pursuing medicine and becoming a pediatrician. Siblings Sakulrat, Puonyarat, and Rutt talk about their childhoods growing up in the United States and their current professional pursuits.
