Marclem Hernandez oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history with Marclem Hernandez conducted by Cecilia Winchell, Stefani Evans, and Claytee D. White on June 30, 2022 for the Reflections: the Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project. In this interview, Hernandez begins the interview by describing the lengthy immigration process throughout his childhood that separated him from his mother for five years, as they lived in both the Manila, Philippines and Las Vegas, Nevada. After switching schools several times while living in Las Vegas, Hernandez graduated from Southwest Career and Technical Academy before attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) for a degree in criminal justice. After graduating UNLV, Hernandez describes attending Georgia Southern University for a master's degree in higher education. He discusses his experience living in southern Georgia, embracing certain parts of the culture, and what switching to virtual education was like during the COVID-19 pandemic. After finishing his degree online in Las Vegas, Hernandez became President Keith Whitfield's assistant at UNLV. He discusses the close relationship he has developed with the president, including how they shaped his own aspirations.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Jon Cobain conducted by Claytee D. White on March 4, 2022 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Cobain describes his childhood growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada and living in a trailer while his father built the family's home. Cobain is the first graduate from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), as he walked across the stage first, thus becoming the first to receive a degree from UNLV. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in business, Cobain attended Northwestern for graduate school. He discusses time spent working in Venezuela, and the value of learning other cultures and building international relationships. At the time of the interview, Cobain is matching gifts to the Jon Cobain Lee Business School at UNLV up to $2.3 million to help first-generation scholars. Other subjects discussed include the Nevada Test Site, Frank Sinatra, and Hoover Dam.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Office of Admissions Records (approximately 1954-1999) contain early enrollment and admission records for Nevada Southern University (NSU), later the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The collection contains correspondence between NSU and other universities regarding transcripts and course credits for potential students, admissions reports, and newspaper clippings of the University's early years. Booklets, flyers, posters, and photographic film and slides used by the University to recruit students are also in the collection.

Abstract

The Jon E. Cobain Papers (1963-2009) contains material representing Cobain's experience as the first official graduate of Nevada Southern University (later University of Nevada, Las Vegas) in 1964. Materials include photographs of Cobain and his family, a scrapbook from his 1964 graduation day, newsletters, a copy of Beau's Bits Handbook, personal correspondence, and his diploma. This collection is comprised exclusively of digital surrogates.

Oral history interview with Leonard M. "Len" Jessup conducted by Claytee D. White on August 06, 2018 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Jessup discusses his family's Italian heritage, and growing up in San Francisco, California. He talks about attending California State University, Chico, doing research work for the University of Arizona, and becoming President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Jessup describes working with Governor Brian Sandoval, developing the UNLV School of Medicine, and his educational philosophy. Lastly, Jessup talks about hosting a United States presidential debate at UNLV in 2016, the redesign of Maryland Parkway, and UNLV housing.

Leonard E. "Pat" Goodall oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Leonard E. "Pat" Goodall conducted by Patrick Carlton on April 18, 2002 for the UNLV University Libraries Oral History Collection. In this interview, Goodall relates his early years in Warrensburg, Missouri and speaks at length about his Rotary Club activities. Next, he gives an overview of his education and subsequent university teaching career before he transitioned to university administration. He tells how he applied and was was hired to become president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in 1979. He explains his thoughts and ideas for the institution, and highlights particular projects that he believes greatly benefit the institution, including the construction of the first engineering building, the first business school, and the Thomas & Mack Center. He then describes his career as a university professor after stepping down from the presidency in 1984 and his retirement in 2000.
