Leon Rockwell Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Leon Rockwell Photograph Collection (approximately 1850-1979) contains black-and-white photographic prints, negatives, and slides, as well as postcards and tintypes. The images portray the lives of the Rockwell family in southern Nevada, their travels throughout New York and the western United States, and their immediate and extended family members. Also included are images of the volunteer and early firefighters of Las Vegas, Nevada, the Rockwell's family cabin at Mount Charleston, Nevada, and the Rockwell family home in Las Vegas. Portions of the images are from the Rockwell family travels across Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and California and depict historic locations such as Cove Fort, Utah; Rhyolite, Nevada; and Pueblo Grande de Nevada.

Abstract

The Pueblo Grande de Nevada Photograph Collection (approximately 1920-1980) contains black-and-white photographic prints, negatives, and slides depicting archaeological sites located in Overton, Moapa, Valley of Fire, Red Rock, Pyramid Lake, Kane Springs, Virgin River, the “Lost City,” and Lake Mead, Nevada. Images display the different stages of digging during the archaeological excavation of Pueblo Grande de Nevada. Also included are images showcasing artifacts uncovered during the excavations, the Saint Thomas, Nevada and the flooding of archaeological sites after the construction of the Hoover (Boulder) Dam.

Nevada Consolidated Copper Company Photograph Albums

Abstract

The Nevada Consolidated Copper Company Photograph Albums (1906-1907) contain two photograph albums from the mining company's chief engineer's office. The photograph albums include cyanotype and black-and-white photographs depicting the construction of the smelting plant, equipment, railroad, and landscape of Ruth, Nevada.

Scott Henry Photographs of the Las Vegas, Nevada Latinx Community

Abstract

The Scott Henry Photographs of the Las Vegas, Latinx Community (approximately 1983-2000) consist of 42 photographic prints depicting members of the Latinx community in Las Vegas, Nevada. Thirty-eight of the prints were used as part of a collaborative project between Scott Henry, photographer and editor for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and Thomas Rodriguez, a prominent member of the Latinx community in Las Vegas, for an exhibit of the Las Vegas Latinx community. Henry and Rodriguez together planned who to photograph for the exhibit. The photographs demonstrate the impact that the Latinx community has on the region's political, economic, and social growth and development. A number of the photographs show early members of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), including John Mendoza, Delia Martinez, Tom Rodriguez, Bob Agonia, Corrine Gutierrez, Nick Flores, Grace Salazar, and Gus Ramos.

Abstract

The Richard "Dick" Ham Photograph Collection (1910-2005) contains photographs of Boulder City, Nevada resident Richard "Dick" Ham, his family, friends, and romantic partners. Images include photographs of Las Vegas High School and the University of California, Berkeley where Ham attended high school and college. The collection includes both formal portraits as well as candid snapshots of Ham and the people who were part of his life.

The Leon Carter, Sr. Photographs (approximately 1948-2019) primarily contain photographic prints documenting Leon Carter, Sr.'s life living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Included are photographs of Carter, his brother John L. Carter, members of the Carter family, and snapshots from the Helldorado Days parade in the mid-1960s. The collection includes a photograph of Carter as a table dealer, a facsimile photograph of Carter when he played baseball in Canada in the early 1950s, and his yearbook portrait. Materials also include a brochure from Carter's political campaign running for County Commissioner in 1972, and a 1989 certificate of appreciation to Carter from the Las Vegas Breakfasters Lions Club.

Abstract

The Flamingo Hilton Photograph Collection (1980-1991) contains photographic prints and slides of the Flamingo Hotel and later the Flamingo Hilton property in Las Vegas, Nevada. Images depict the exterior, swimming pool, and restaurant from approximately 1947 and interiors of the Third Tower rooms from the 1990s. The collection also contains two illustrations by Rissman and Rissman Associates, Ltd. of Flamingo properties designed for Laughlin and Reno, Nevada.

The Nellie Bunch Collection of Lake Mead Postcards (approximately 1970-1979) contains two postcards advertising Lake Mead in southern Nevada from the 1970s. Each postcard depicts several aspects of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, including the marina, Hoover Dam, campgrounds, the Lake Mead Lodge, and Boulder Beach.

The African American Experience Community Scanning Day Photograph Collection (approximately 1958-1980, 2004) is comprised of digital surrogates of photographic prints and ephemera that document the experiences of the African American community in Las Vegas, Nevada. Materials were donated by members of the Las Vegas community as part of a community scanning day event hosted by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas's University Libraries in 2013.

Abstract

The Gertrude and Roosevelt Toston Photograph Collection is comprised of digital surrogates of photographic prints, slides, and ephemera documenting Gertrude and Roosevelt Toston's lives in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1958 to 2002. The collection mainly documents Roosevelt Toston's career as a newscaster for KLAS-TV and Gertrude Toston's involvement with the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Other images in this collection include photographs of Roosevelt Toston's childhood home in Epps, Louisiana and photographs of Gertrude Toston with her stepfather, Reverend Leo A. Johnson.
