Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History Records

Abstract

The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History Records (1939-2003) detail the creation of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History in Las Vegas, Nevada founded by Richard H. Brooks, a professor of anthropology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The records are comprised primarily of correspondence between Brooks and members of the Southwestern Anthropological Association (SWAA), the Society for California Archaeology (SCA), and the meetings and exhibitions of the Nevada State Museum. The collection also contains financial statements that describe expenses for supplies, research, and excursions. Also included are anthropological, archaeological, and historical publications, as well as administrative files and Richard Brooks' correspondence with the Nevada Archaeological Survey (NAS). The collection also includes architectural floor plans for the Classroom and Physical Education, the original space that was converted into the museum in 1980, and plans for the redesign of the Barrick Museum and the Harry Reid Environmental Research Center addition.

Smith, former Associate Dean of UNLV University Libraries. Materials include UNLV accreditation reports and supporting documentation as well as annual reports and strategic plans for UNLV University Libraries. Materials also include various UNLV faculty and employee policy guides and orientation handbooks and an information packet for UNLV Libraries Advisory Board.

Abstract

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Dean of Libraries Records (approximately 1994-2017) consists mainly of subject, budget, committee, and research files from Patricia Iannuzzi who served as Dean of UNLV Libraries from 2005 to 2017. The records in this collection cover topics including the Libraries' budgets, planning for the Health Sciences Library, and general space planning. The collection also includes Ianuzzi's research files on information literacy and general education. Also included in this collection are working files and correspondence from Myoung-ja Kwon who previously served as Associate Dean and Interim Dean of UNLV Libraries before retiring from UNLV in 2001.

Abstract

The El Rancho Vegas Newspaper Clippings (approximately 1990-2004) primarily contains copies of newspaper clippings from 1940 to 1948 on the El Rancho Vegas from the Las Vegas Evening Review-Journal. The collection also includes copies of newspaper clippings on the Thunderbird Hotel and Casino and Club Bingo. The materials in this collection were collected by Joyce Moore for her research as a history graduate student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The William F. Harrah College of Hospitality Records on UNLVino are comprised of materials (1974-2020) that document UNLVino, an annual wine tasting event organized by Southern Glazer's Wine and Spirits and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' William F. Harrah College of Hospitality in Las Vegas, Nevada. The materials in this collection includes press coverage, various promotional and marketing materials, event photographs, and event planning documents. The collection also includes posters advertising UNLVino and issues of Premier magazine, a publication produced by the William F. Harrah College of Hospitality.

Abstract

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Department of Theatre Records (approximately 1960-2017) are mainly comprised of the records of Ellis Pryce-Jones who was a faculty member in the Theatre Arts Department from 1972 to 2004 and Jerry L. Crawford who served as chair of the Theatre Department and the Dean of the College of Fine Arts. Records mainly represent shows produced by the Theatre Arts Department as well as documenting the evolution of the department over the years. The records document curricula used for courses, video recordings of the department's performances, and posters and other materials used to market shows. Additionally, there is a small portion of documentation from other theaters where staff and students performed and worked, some of which are located in Southern Nevada.

Clara Alvarez oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Clara Alvarez conducted by Norma Flores and Claytee D. White on October 25, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Brian "Paco" Alvarez also participated in the interview. Clara Alvarez describes her family background and her childhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She recalls dropping out of high school to work, memories of early jobs, and why she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1966. She secured her first position at the Sands Hotel as a maid during a time when that job position was held almost exclusively by Black women. Alvarez describes her time working at the Sands Hotel, and recalls meeting Frank Sinatra and his wife. After working as a maid, she was recruited to deal games in clubs and casinos, and was the first woman to deal at the Las Vegas Club. Then, Alvarez explains the changes in racial discrimination in the city, and says she never felt discriminated against in Las Vegas. Lastly, she talks about moving back to Florida and what she did while living there.

Ellen Cosgrove oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Ellen Cosgrove conducted by Claytee D. White on August 19, 2019 for the UNLV School of Medicine Oral History Project. Ellen Cosgrove discusses her early family life and education, continuing to her higher education, where she graduated with a master's in Russian history and later entered Hahnemann Medical College where she specialized in internal medicine. She then describes her family life and her husband, Jefferey Fahly. Cosgrove goes on to talk about different communities in New Mexico welcoming people with different ethnic backgrounds, and how she participated in various organizations that helped improve the health of the community and solve issues that prevented patients from receiving care. In 2014, she was hired by Barbara Atkinson to build a medical school at UNLV. Lastly, Cosgrove discusses the UNLV School of Medicine educational program, which is based in bioethics, community engagement, wellness, and problem-based learning.
