Mercedes Maharis is the former director of Nevada CURE and co-author of the Spartacus Project Report. She began teaching meditation in the Nevada state prison system in 1997. This led to Maharis advocating for inmates’ rights and the beginnings of the Nevada chapter of CURE. They presented the Spartacus Project Report to state leaders and at the December 5, 2000 Board of Prison Commissioners meeting. She co-authored the Spartacus Project Report along with Donald Hinton, Sr., a prisoner advocate whose son was incarcerated at the Indian Springs prison.

Bruce Walter Church was born on June 9, 1941, in St. George, Utah. Bruce married Carol “LaDean” Tobler on July 22, 1960, and had numerous children: Russell B.; K. Keith; Patrick W.; Katherine Madsen; Corey H.; John E.(D); Robert E. (D); Joey T.; Jeffery D.; and Candice Howe.
Church is affiliated with the Nevada Test Site as Assistant Manager for Environment, Safely, Security, and Health. Church has also been employed as a Health Physic Consultant and Farmer.

Robert W. Taft was born on November 1, 1925, in Sioux City, Iowa. Robert married Jean on January 22, 1957, and they had three children: Michael W. Taft, Rebecca T. Ashley, and Mary T. Clark.
Taft attended College Notre Dame. Taft also served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Taft was the assistant manager for plans, engineering, and budget for the Nevada Test Site.
