During his college and professional careers, he most notably played quarterback, but also played as a defensive back and punter. He played college football for the Horned Frogsat Texas Christian University, where he was a two-time All-American. He then played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Washington Redskinsfrom 1937 to 1952.
