The Patricia van Betten Healthcare and Nursing Papers (1985-2009) are comprised of personal correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, and reports of Patricia van Betten, who worked with the League of Women Voters and the Nevada Nurses Association from 1985 to 2011. The collection details several Nevada organizations including the Nevada Chapter of the Health Care Reform Project (HCRP), the League of Women Voters, and the Nevada Nurses Association. Also of interest, the collection contains written material, video recordings, and compact discs pertaining to health curriculum for the Clark County School District.

Biographical / Historical Note

Registered nurse and health care activist Patricia van Betten was heavily involved in the Nevada Chapter of the Health Care Reform Project (HCRP), the League of Women Voters, and the Nevada Nurses Association. Van Betten was a part of an initiative to improve the quality of health care as well as increase the availability of health insurance to Nevada citizens. These efforts contributed to the passage of the Patient Protection Act which was sponsored by Assemblywoman Barbara Buckley in the Nevada State Assembly. As an activist and organizer, van Betten was also involved in other projects including advisement on health standards and curriculum for the Clark County School District and an oral history project on Nevada nurses.

Materials were donated in 2014 and 2016 by Patricia van Betten; accession numbers 2014-008 and 2016-023.

Processing Note

In 2014, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Ian M. Baldwin revised the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards and entered the data into ArchivesSpace. In 2016, Joyce Moore completed an addition of one box to the collection.

Separated Materials

Two early drafts of the Pat van Betten oral history interview were removed and placed in the Oral History Research Center (OHRC) vertical files; OH-01864.

Ethalda Thelan oral history interview files; one cassette tape, one 3.5" floppy disc, typed transcript bound, typed transcript unbound and copies of research papers were removed and placed in MS-00784 with the original interview.

Sandisk 8GB flash drive with label "History of Nursing" and PNY8GB flash drive with label "Nursing" were removed and placed in MS-00784.
