Abstract

The Lohan School of Shaolin Records (1994-2025) document the activities of the Lohan School of Shaolin, a traditional Chinese martial arts school, based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The majority of the materials include digital photographs and videos documenting the Lohan School's Lion dance performances for Chinese New Year and other local celebrations around Las Vegas. Materials also include the Lohan School's kung fu student manuals, class schedules, and copies of the school's newsletter. There are also digital photographs documenting candid moments with the Lohan School students and staff during classes at the school and at different events including Lion dance performances and social events.

Biographical / Historical Note

The Lohan School of Shaolin is a martial arts school in Las Vegas, Nevada that was founded in 1994 by Steve Baugh, a grandmaster in martial arts and a Zen Buddhist priest. Originally from Los Angeles, California, Baugh was originally from Los Angeles, Baugh studied martial arts as a child and young adult. He moved his family to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1988 and started to teach martial arts to students in his garage. In 1994, the Lohan School of Shaolin was officially established and opened an official studio in Chinatown Plaza that serves as a studio. The school also includes a cultural center and Buddhist temple, the Lohan Spiritual and Cultural Center. The Lohan School of Shoalin offers classes in traditional Chinese martial arts including kung fu, chi gong, and tai chi. The school also regularly performs the Chinese Lion dance, a traditional dance that is performed to bring good luck and fortune, throughout the Las Vegas community for special events like store openings and holidays like Chinese New Year/Lunar New Year.

Acquisition Note

Materials were donated in 2025 by the Lohan School of Shaolin; accession number 2025-027.

Processing Note

In 2025, Tammi Kim arranged and described the collection and created the finding aid in ArchivesSpace. Physical materials were rehoused and digital files were transferred off of external storage media including hard drives, flash drives, and optical discs. The digital files were reformatted to create access copies. Original filenames were retained and normalized to remove or replace spaces and special characters to ensure consistenty and compatability across different systems.

Appraisal Note

Acquired by Su Kim Chung, curator, as part of UNLV Special Collections and Archives documenting the growth of Chinatown in Las Vegas. Approximately 5.00 GB of digital photographs and videos that were determined to be out-of-scope by the curator were not included in the collection.
