History of Theta Theta Omega Chapter
During the early1960s, Las Vegas was a segregated city, and the majority of its African citizens lived on what is know as the Westside. At that time, the primary occupation of African Americans was work in several positions in the hotels and casinos. Most African American females were employed as maids, and the majority African American males were employed as porters. African American entertainers, such as Bill “Bojangles” Robinsons, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, Billy Eckstine, Nat King Cole, were not permitted to perform on the Las Vegas Strip until the 1950s. It would be 1960 before these performers would be allowed to stay at a strip hotel and be allowed to attend the shows.
In addition to the hotel industry, there were African American service men and women stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, who brought with them their families. There were also members of the African American community employed by the Clark County School District as classroom teachers and support staff. The first African American principal was not appointed until 1956 and the first African American female principal, not until 1965.
Many of the conditions for African Americans in the earlyl 960s were seen as an injustice. Basic civil rights were a dream, and the reality was African Americans were still facing prejudice and racism. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., was well know for its efforts to secure justice for all people. A few Alpha Kappa Alpha women had a dream to find their sisters and a vision to place our sorority in the Las Vegas desert.
In 1962, six ladies of Alpha Kappa Sorority, Inc., came together with the idea of starting a graduate chapter in Las Vegas, Nevada. In order to make this dream a reality, the search was on to find other members that would be interested in accomplishing the goal. Notices were posted at the Clark County School District and Nellis Air Force Base in search of potential members for their interest group.
The group was called “Le Debonaires” and functioned as a club for one year. They elected officers, planned projects and provided service in the community. “Le Debonaires” maintained their twelve members for one year and reported directly to the Regional Director, who was Soror Leadie M. Clark. At that time, Soror Julia B. Purnell was the Supreme Basileus.
After completing their first year, the members of “Le Debonairss” had proven their ability to organize and succeed in accomplishing their goals and carrying out their plans. The group was allowed to change its
name to Alpha Kappa Alpha Women and proceed with the process of chartering a chapter. The greatest fear was that one of the sorors from Nellis Air Force Base would be transferred before the chapter requirements for chartering were met.
At the end of the second year, with the number still at twelve, all of the necessary requirements were completed and approved. The chartering took place in May of 1965 with charter members Florence White, Lorrayne Hall, Jacqueline Hoggard, Betty Forshee, Jeanne Penn, Harriett Robinson, Lois Bolden, Margret Crawford, Barbara Kirkland, Dorthy Von-Phul and Ann Beth Carter.
Within a few years, chapter membership decreased to eight members when sorors from Nellis Air Force base were relocated. With the arrival of sorors into the city and the intake of many new members, the chapter’s membership has steadily grown over the years. Theta Theta Omega has continued to build its membership and is a pillar in the Las Vegas community. Two of our charter members continue to be active in the chapter and with new members, transfer members and reclaimed members, we are proud to have reached our vision of an outstanding chapter with 140 members.

Soror Barbara Kirkland, a 64 year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and charter member of Theta Theta Omega chapter served for 31 uninterrupted years as the chapter Chaplain. She will now rest for a moment but
continue her service to the chapter as needed.
Sow SpÄjht
Soror Minerva Stewart studied at UC Santa Barbara, where she was initiated into Nu Nu Chapter in 1986. She graduated from Hunter College in New York and immediately began interning with Spike Lee's Forty Acres and a Mule, Paris Barclay at Black and White Films and Warrington and Reginald Hudlin at the Black Filmmakers’
Foundation. Her transition into copywriting was aided by her passion for pop culture, film production, directing and writing. As a copywriter, working with the most esteemed Black advertising agencies in New York City, such as the UniWorld Group where she created television, radio and print ads for Lincoln-Mercury, AT&T, Citibank and Microsoft to Spike DDB and Chisholm-Mingo Group.
After relocating to Las Vegas, Burrell Communications, a Black advertising agency located in Chicago retained her writing services for Comcast, McDonald’s and Walmart. In-between writing assignments, she penned her first novel, My Awfully Wedded Husband, about four sorority sisters who help each other navigate the 4Ds of marriage: divorce, desertion, death and delusion.
