    Young Authors Committee Report June 7, 2003
    On April 21, 2003, the judging of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Signature Project Young Authors Program was held at the Superintendent's boardroom. Community dignitaries who served as judges were: Marcia Rose Walker, Executive Director of EOB, Bertha Warrick, Supervisor, Clark County Social Services, Alberta Mitchell, School Administrator (retired), Carolyn Pate, MGM Grand Hotel, Eric Adams, CEO Adams Research, and Karen Stewart-Williams, Art Specialist, Clark County School District. There were two categories with the following topics: Grades 2-3 -"If I were the President of the United States, I would..." and Grades 4-6 -"We deserve to live in peace: How I would create world peace."
    There were 400 students and a combined total of 10 classrooms that participated. From these students, the best five compositions per classroom, a total of 50 entries, was submitted for judging from three local elementary schools: Charlotte Hill, Frank Kim, and M.J. Christensen. Each classroom received a first, second, and third place certificate created by Soror Annette Craighead. The grand prize winners were selected from the fifty entries submitted.
    A reception was held April 23, 2003 to honor the winners and entrants at the Superintendent's boardroom. Councilwoman and Soror Lynnette Boggs-Mcdonald was the keynote speaker. Her topic and delivery was outstanding! The grand prize winners were Darielle Schroeder, second grade, Frank Kim Elementary, Principal Scott Bailey and Jasica Gill, fifth grade, Charlotte Hill Elementary School, Principal (Soror) Jacki Brown. Upon completion of the awards ceremony, refreshments were served. Prizes were donated by Soror Sharon Walton for the grand prize winners which included a day scheduler with calculator, a trapper notebook, pens and pencils, and a test strategy game. The National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) from UNLV donated journals and a box of pens for the fifty entrants.
    Committee members include: Patti Hester, chairman of Young Authors, Kaweeda Adams, Education Chairman, Sandra Bass, Jacki Brown, Jackie Caffey, Annette Craighead, Tisha Johnson, Barbara McCants-Hill, Veronica Wiliams, Ethel Archibald, Quin Rivers and all the honorary members who helped make this a success.

    Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.-Theta Theta Omega Young Writer’s Essay Committee Report April 5, 2003
    The Young Writer’s committee met March 8, 2003 at Holy Trinity A.M.E. church immediately following the regular sorority chapter meeting to formalize plans for the Young Writer’s Essay contest. Education Committee Chairman, Soror Kaweeda Adams, Young Writer’s Program Chairman, Patti Hester and committee members, mind stormed and discussed ideas for implementation of the Young Writer’s Program. Soror Kaweeda stated she would create and distribute correspondence with the requirements for participants to the judges and participating schools. Soror Kaweeda stated she would reserve the Superintendent’s board room April 2, 2003 for judging. Members agreed that upon the confirmation of the judging site, judges would be contacted and information would be distributed. The day was changed from April 2nd to April 9th, 2003, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Teachers recieved the information and requirements March 31, 2003 with a completion date of April 7, 2003.
    The following is an update of scheduled activities:

    Young Writer’s Committee members are asked to meet immediately following the April 5th sorority meeting to finalize logistics for the April 9th judging, and to plan a reception for participating students, teachers, principals, parents, judges, and dignitaries during the week of April 20-26, 2003,

    Student essays will be collected Monday, April 7th from participating schools,

    Young Writer’s Committee members will meet briefly Monday, April 7, 2003, to distribute and deliver essays to judges to read prior to the April 9th final selection at the Edward Greer conference room,

    Young Writer’s Committee members will meet at the Edward Greer conference room at the Clark County School District, April 9, 2003 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. for the final judging and selection of the winning student essays.

    A reception and brief program will be held during the week of April 20-26, 2003 for essay winners, parents, teachers, principals, judges and dignitaries.
