Scholarship Committee Report
Scholarship Chair, Sharon Savage
January 15, 2003
It was reported at the December Sorority meeting that we would participate/ explore the possibility of receiving matching funds from the Ronald McDonald House Charities. I attended the follow-up meeting along with our Basileus. The Public Education Foundation which we began a partnership last year will continue to facilitate the dissemination of our scholarships. Our partnership with the foundation cuts down on meeting time, expenses (mailing, copying, etc.) and assists with a smooth transition ensuring students receive their funds.
Per my discussion with our Basileus, we hope to award $5000 in scholarships. Our partnership with the Ronald McDonald House Charities would enable us to give $10,000 in scholarships as they will match dollar for dollar what we give. This is an excellent opportunity for the Sorority. It is crucial that the Mardi Gras Ball and Souvenir Journal are successful endeavors.
Our Supreme Basileus has also forged a relationship with the Presidential Freedom Scholarship sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The committee will be responsible for assisting students apply for this scholarship. Once more information is received, it will be shared with the committee.
Although we collaborate with the Foundation, we select the students. The Selection Committee Meetings will be held March 24, 2003 through April 25, 2003. You will be informed of the meeting date and time. May 2, 2003 through May 20, 2003 is the time frame in which recipients and non-recipients will be notified. The Foundation sponsored awards presentation is tentatively scheduled for May 21, 2003 location TBA. June is when the scholarship funds will be distributed to colleges and universities.

Sorors,
I would first like to apologize if you did not receive information regarding the Selection Committee Meeting. I did not schedule the meeting nor did I know the meeting was taking place until the morning of May 6th. There was a breakdown in communication with the Foundation Office as they were inundated with more applications this year as a result of the partnership with the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Again, my sincere apology to anyone who did not receive the information. Thank you to those who were able to participate (Billie Rayford, Edna States, Maxine Randolph, Jacqulyn Shropshire, Denell Hoggard, Amanda McWilliams, Minnie Stringfellow and Kaweeda Adams).
Those who were able to attend or sent their information selected 10 scholarship recipients to receive $1,000 each. There were 26 applicants. The applicants were rated on financial need, an essay, letters of recommendation, resume(activities, community service) and transcript(course work, gpa, etc).
The 2003 Scholarship Recipients are:
Asmeret Asghedom - Silverado High School
Demetrius Dudley - Community College High School Nicole Duru - Centinnial High School
Ga Nesha Hamilton - Las Vegas Academy
Mallory Hank - Valley High School
Loretta Hickman - Valley High School
Ashley McIntyre - Chapparral High School
Alanna Robinson - Valley High School
Courtney Williams - Eldorado High School
Tiffany Woods -Trinity High School
There is still work to be done. The joint scholarship reception with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is tentatively scheduled for June 21, 2003. Please email me or call me with a good day and time you would be available to meet. It would need to be after 530pm. Things to consider for the committee. Last year an Omega man was the speaker. So, this year it will be a Soror. Please think of an active Soror that would be a great inspirational or motivational speaker for the youth. Other items to consider: plaques, certificates, refreshments, decorations, the program, etc.
Thanks.
Sisterly, Sharon
