Education Committee Report October 4, 2003
The IvyAkademy Training Session was held on Tuesday, September 23rd at 6:30 pm at the Education Ctr. Six sorors were in attendance. We addressed strategies and techniques to assist and tutor young children: writing and illustrating books, reading comprehension strategies, and vocabulary cards were addressed. Sorors we you’re your support as we may need to look at other alternatives for how to make this program work for Theta Theta Omega. The kick off for the Reading Akademy has been scheduled for Thursday, October 23rd, 3:30 pm at Wendell Williams ES. We will coordinate with the school and send information to the sorors who will be able to attend. Soror Jackie Caffey is the chair of the IvyAkademy Reading program.
The Young Authors’ Program will be gearing up in the next few months. We are planning to begin earlier this year so that the students have more time to develop their books and essays. More information will be forthcoming. Soror Patti Hester is the chair for the Young Authors’ Program.

Soror 1: What would the world be like if we could not read?
Soror 2: What would our quality of life be like if we could not read?
Soror 3: What obstacles would our children face if they are unable to read?
Goal: The goal of the IvyReading Akademy is to give students the reading time, support and guidance that is necessary to enable them to read at or above grade level upon their exit from the primary grades.
We need our sorors to assist in moving this program forward. Assisting in raising student achievement is primary objective of the IvyReading Akademy. The five areas addressed through the program are: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Just look at how easy it can be to help a student enhance his/her reading skills.
