Speaker
Dr. Larzette G. Hale was born in Idabel, Oklahoma,
the daughter of Thomas and Mary Golden. She completed
high school in Taft, Oklahoma and entered
Langston University at the age of 16. After graduation
she married William H. Hale and twenty years later she
returned to Langston University as its First Lady when
her husband Dr. William H. Hale was elected the 10th
President of the University.
During the intervening twenty years, Soror Hale received
her Masters and Ph.D. degrees in accounting
from the University of Wisconsin. She was the thirdj
Black woman in the nation to become a Certified PublicAccountant.
When she received the Ph.D. in accounting,
she became the first Black woman to hold a Ph.D.
and a CPA. In December, 2000, she received the Honorary
Doctorate in Humanities from Weber State University
in Ogden, Utah and in March 2001, the Outj
standing Service Award from Utah State University.
During her professional career, she has served as
professor of accounting and Chair of the Business Administration
Department at Bethune-Cookman College
in Dayton Beach, Florida; Clark College in
Atlanta, Georgia; Langston University; and for 18 years she served as professor of accounting
and Head of the School of Accountancy at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Upon retirement
from Utah State, she was invited to serve as Distinguished Professor of Accounting at Brigham
Young University in Provo, Utah. In 1995, she was invited back to Langston University to serve
as Interim Dean of the School of Business. She was the first black to serve as a member of the
Utah state Board of Regents (the body that oversee’s Utah’s 9 colleges and universities), 1993-
99.
State and National recognitions have included:
Outstanding CPA, Outstanding Accounting Executor, Life Membership and Special Life-Time
Educator Awards from the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants.
She has received honors for community service from several organizations, including the National
Association of University Women, the Soroptomist International and the National
Association of Business and Women’s Clubs.
Soror Hale began service in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. as a charter member and Basileus
of Alpha Zeta Chapter at Langston University in 1939. She was elected as Supreme Tamiochus
in 1955 and served two terms. She was elected as our first Supreme Basileus Elect in 1964 and
became the 17th Supreme Basileus in 1966. Her contributions include the Heritage Brochures,
the Heritage Tour for High School students, the Foreign Travel Grants for Undergraduate Sorors
and most important the installation of an accounting system and endowment;investment plan.
The accumulated endowment funds helped provide the down payment for our present headquarters
when it was first built. Soror Hale now serves on the Strategic Planning Committee and the
Finance Committee of our national body.
Soror Hale has three daughters: Mrs. Pauline Hale Jackson, Mrs. Janis Hale Baker and Judge
Gina L. Hale, all sorors. She has seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is a
member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Logan, Utah.

Founders' Day 2002
To our 17th National President Dr. Larzette Hale, our Far Western Regional
Director Diana G. Shipley, all those who serve Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
family, and friends, it is my pleasure to recognize the committee chairmen
for the 2001 program year. As members and supporters of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority activities, you approved and supported a tremendous
program for the year 2001. In the spirit of the Founders of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, I would like to give you a brief overview of the chapter's
accomplishments and ask each chairman to come forward to receive a
small token of appreciation for their leadership.
J We started the year with a beautiful entry in the Martin Luther King
Parade thanks to the efforts of Soror Grace Mills.
S We would like to ask the AKA Teens to stand at this time. This
fantastic group of young ladies were second place winners in the
2002 MLK Parade. They are active in community service projects,
leadership development activities, fund raising efforts, and
community partnerships targeting youth. We thank Soror Belisa
Brownlee, AKA Teens Committee chair along with Sorors Tina
Rimmey and Donnyss Rucker for their work with this dynamic
group of young ladies.
J Once the MLK activity was completed, Soror Marian Burns
helped us focus our efforts on the fourth annual Mardi Gras
celebration where over 300 guests viewed our first Mardi Gras
souvenir booklet and supported our major fund-raising effort
J The proceeds from Mardi Gras and the second annual Juneteenth
celebration led by Soror Amanda McWilliams allowed the
chapter to distribute $3500 in scholarships to local graduating
seniors. Soror Lisa McNeil chaired the Scholarship Committee.
S At the 2001 Founders Day program, two hundred thirty sorors and
guests joined Theta Theta Omega and Kappa Xi chapters as we
commemorated the legacy of our founders, celebrated the
accomplishments of our great sisterhood, and heard the inspiring
words of past Supreme Anti-Basileus and Grammateus Rosalind
Griffin of Detroit, Michigan at the beautiful Paiute Golf Resort.
Founders Day 2001 was co-chaired by Soror Ouida Brown and yours truly.Does Theta Theta Omega Chapter support the national signature program ON TRACK ? You bet we do. Under the leadership of Soror Shirley Carroll, ON TRACK chairman and in collaboration with the Arts & Humanities Committee chaired by Quin Rivers, the fifth grade class at H. P. Fitzgerald Elementary delighted in the activities of the multicultural arts festival. Activities celebrated the history of jazz, poetry, writing with storybooks, along with an arts and crafts activity made especially for MOM. Kindergarteners had a "bootiful" time at their Halloween bash. Software programs, books and enrichment materials were funded through a School-to- Work grant along with donations from publishers and chapter members. Sorors volunteered as tutors and classroom helpers throughout the year as well as participated in Nevada Reading Week activities.Children from the community "took to the friendly skies" as they were introduced to the world of aviation through a collaborative with the Tuskegee Airmen, the Experimental Aviation Association, and United Airlines. Theta Theta Omega was responsible for involving over 100 children in the Inspiration and Young Eagles Flights. The chapter was recognized in the national newsletter of the Tuskegee Airmen for their efforts.Soror Diane Stith helped us track the dollars spent with minority businesses as we celebrated Black Dollar Days. She now heads the Twenty Pearls Investment Club which became a reality in 2001, and helped guide us through the development of a a dynamic roster of financial and legal professionals at the third annual Money Matters seminar on December 8, 2001.Soror Jacqueline Brown kept the chapter focused on the base of our "Blazing New Trails" initiative - leadership development. Members have actively participated in the leadership modules, the chapter operations workshop, cluster, and regional conference activities. Not only are Theta Theta Omega and Kappa Xi members in attendance at the local and regional levels, workshop presenters from each chapter received rave reviews for their presentations during cluster and regional conference activities. Thanks to the support of our Far Western Regional Director Soror Diana Shipley, Theta Theta Omega now has a strong presence at the regional level. As we plan for Leadership Seminar 2003 and
Regional Conference 2005 in Las Vegas, your support will be
crucial.
Our Standards Committee led by Soror Sandra Stewart-Bass
provided the direction to measure the success of goals and
objectives established by the chapter.
Soror Carolyn Parks, our 2001 Mardi Gras queen, chaired the
Budget and Finance Committee.
Soror Lavonne Lewis guided chapter members through the
process of a chapter By-Laws and a Manual of Standard
Operations revision.
Public policy issues were addressed through the Connections
Committee chaired by Soror Ouida Brown. Theta Theta Omega
organized and participated in registrar of voters training, AKA Day
at the Capitol, and "So You Want to Run for Public Office
Workshop." We appreciate the time that County Commissioner
and Soror Yvonne Atkinson-Gates, Las Vegas City Councilwoman
and Soror Lynette Boggs-McDonald, Nevada Senator Joe Neal,
Nevada Assemblymen Morse Arberry and Wendell Williams spent
with members of the chapter in an outstanding workshop session.
Soror Annette Craighead, Publicity Committee chair, launched a
chapter website. Thanks to her efforts as the Ivy Leaf Reporter,
articles on Theta Theta Omega programs and sorors appeared in
the four issues of the Ivy Leaf, the national sorority publication.
Many of you have attended chapter meetings because her tenacity
with local media entities.
Our Hospitality Committee chaired by the awesome Soror Ethel
Archibald keeps us bonded as a chapter. We enjoy monthly
treats in recognition of birthdays, anniversaries, and personal
celebrations. Sorors are right there to provide the strength and
encouragement in times of need. It is all done with grace and
style.
The Membership Committee chaired by our immediate past
president, Soror Jacqueline Hall provided some rich experiences
this year. Members thoroughly enjoyed the Summer Cooler.
Chapter Retreat, and membership process. The Chapter Retreat,
held at the Hacienda Hotel in Boulder City, was facilitated by
Soror Willa White. We were so proud to welcome seven new
sorors to the sisterhood at a membership luncheon chaired by
Soror Wilhelmina Lee. We are also proud that six sorors
transferred to Theta Theta Omega and three reactivated at the
Boule level Soror Beverly Winston is chairing the New Members
Community Service Project that is scheduled for implementation
later this year.
J Soror Sharon Savage we will never forget your efforts as
Graduate Advisor to the Kappa Xi Chapter for the past four years
nor will we forget the efforts of the Graduate Advisor's Task Force
as members joined the AIDS for Southern Nevada Fun Walk,
assisted in the undergraduate mentoring program, supported the
Undergraduate Week and membership activities. Theta Theta
Omega members beamed as Kappa Xi members were recognized
for academic excellence at UNLV campus recognition activities.
J Our golden soror of 57 years Soror Janet Rhoden chaired the
Music Committee brought lovely melodies to our hearts.
J Thanks to the efforts of our Nominating Committee, chaired by
Soror Bertha Pendleton, the chapter had a dynamic slate of
officers from which to choose. The Tellers Committee, chaired by
Soror Thais Devore Baccus, validated results of the various
elections. Thank you for keeping the integrity of the elections
process.
J Weren't we on top of the world when Soror Lisa McNeil helped
the chapter achieve the doctoral level in the Alpha Kappa Alpha
Educational Advancement Foundation efforts?
J \Ne were even more estatic when NBLIC Health Program was
awarded the first annual Cornelia Banks Health Award at the Far
Western Regional Conference? We can give accolades to Soror
Dorothy Johnson and the NBLIC/Health Committee for bringing
the our national president and Far Western Regional Director to
the third annual Health Forum.
J Also at the 2001 Far Western Regional Conference, the chapter
scrapbook won second place in its category. The committee was
chaired by our creative and crafty Soror Ina Dorman. Theta Theta
Omega sorors were awarded second place ribbons for entries in
the poetry, arts and crafts, and the Ida L. Jackson Award
categories.
J We look forward to supporting the new Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome initiative to be chaired by Soror Terri Polite, who is
also our Tea Rose Talk Editor.
J Thanks to the generosity of chapter members, twenty-two families
expressed gratitude to Sorors Amanda McWilliams, Sami
Randolph along with members of the Thanksgiving Baskets
Committee as they each received a baskets filled with a turkey and
all of the ingredients for a nutritious Thanksgiving meal.
J Soror Ina Dorman led the effort for 60 coats were donated to
local charities for AKA Coat Day.
J Soror Gwendolyn Gates-Bartlett helped the chapter launch the
AKA Make A Difference Day program. This year, Theta Theta
Omega received a $700 donation credit for food, clothing, baby
items donated to the local Shade Tree Homeless Shelter.
J Plans are now under way to support the Senior Citizens Project
chaired by Soror Rhoda Anderson.
J You might ask, how did we do it all. Well, with the support of all
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, family, and friends;
community partners, through lots of prayers led and inspired by
our charter member and chaplain Soror Barbara Kirkland; under
the leadership of our esteemed chapter president Soror Kaweeda
Adams.
As program chair, it was my pleasure to facilitate this phenomenal
program.

NEW TRAILS?

stand and give yourselves a round of applause for the execution of an
exemplary program.

To our 17th National President Dr. Larzette Hale, Far Western Regional Director
Mrs. Diana G. Shipley, all those who serve Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, family,
and friends, I have the honor of presenting Theta Theta Omega Chapter's 2002
community awards. I would ask that our president Kaweeda Adams and
Founders' Day Chairman Dr. Ouida Brown assist with the presentations.
To our community partners for their collaboration in initiatives that target
education, economics, and especially youth leadership development, we present
a small token of appreciation.
Dr. Kenneth Westfield for his support of the youth in aviation project. I would
ask Soror Lavonne Lewis to accept this plaque on Dr. Westfield's behalf.
J. B. Knighten Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen for allowing Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority to play a significant role in the youth in aviation initiative.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, for their support of the Money Matters
Community Economics Seminar... ten members of their youth group, the Del
Uniques were in attendance at 2001 seminar.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc, for their support of the Money Matters and
Youth in Aviation programs.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and Councilman Lawrence Weekly for getting the
Kappa League involved in the Money Matters seminars.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Kappa Xi Chapter for allowing the Omega
Gents to participate in the Money Matters and youth in aviation projects.

Founder’s Day February 2, 2002 Final Report
The ultimate goal of any committee is to use their
resources to the best of their ability; therefore the
Founder’s Day Committee makeSthe following
recommendations to TTO:
• As long as the luncheon is open to the public, the chapter
should develop an internal rededication/awards
breakfast, lunch or dinner to be held on a date different
from the Founder’s Day. Awards and special recognition
of committee chairman, outstanding achievements
should be given at that time.
• During public luncheons, continue to recognize
community recipients for Arts and Humanities,
Economics, and the like that are targets of the sorority, at
the Founders Day activity.
• Open Founder’s Day Luncheon should be set to a
consistent time of the year.
• Souvenirs for guest should be eliminated (cost
effectiveness).
• Luncheon and program to last a maximum of no more
than two nnd n hvrtfihours.
• The location and date for the next year’s activity should
be reserved immediately following the completion of the
current year’s activity when ever possible.
• The committee should have a person at the steps of the
dais to assist sorors needing help.

Determine location for luncheon, determine the needs for committees and make
assignments.
Determine the cost for the tickets. The tickets will be $40.00. SOFOFS are
asked to sell at least 4 tickets.

The Luncheon will be at the Monte Carlo Hotel at 12 noon on
Saturday, January 11, 2003.
Menu
The menu is Baby Mesclun Greens, Tomatoes, cucumbers,
with ranch and raspberry vinaigrette dressing, grilled breast of
chicken with smitake mushrooms, Broccoli, cauliflower and
carrots, rice pilaf, freshly baked rolls and butter, creamy
cheesecake topped with seasonal berries, and freshly brewed
coffee, decaffinated coffee, hot tea and iced tea. The lunch will
cost 20.00 each plus 7.25% tax and 17% gratuity.
The cost is 40.00 per ticket. Sorors will be asked to be sell four.
Podium Decorations $ 500.00- for two centerpieces and 16
corsages for people on Dais $ 100.00
We will be using the hotel centerpieces.

officers for dinner on Friday, January
10th. Perdiem will be provided for
speaker at 30.00 per day to pick up
meals not provided by sorority.

Sorors selling 4 tickets each will generate $12,800.00
