KIM RUSSELL is the Program Director for the International House of Blues Foundation in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ms. Russell is an award winning producer, writer and actress. In 1998, Ms. Russell was selected to the Nevada Arts in Education Roster of Artists. As an artist-in-residence, her work In the classroom includes teaching students skills for public speaking, confidence# being with an audience, and imaginative!

Ms. Russell has written and staged "one musical, two biographical plays, one radio mystery play and a documentary. One such play, Tuskegee Love Letters created from her original short story, is taken from actual letters from her mother and father about life as one of America’s Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black pilots for the military. In the past year, Ms. Russell was selected by the Nevada Screen Actors Guild Nevada Conservatory to produce their tribute to Broadway, starring "Mr. Whipple" Dick Wilson. Other honors include: KLAS-TV, Las Vegas, Channel 8 Community Pride 2000 Award; Las Vegas Clark County Library District moderator of Wednesday's Woman; Nevada NOW Equality Award; Role Model Awards at the 14* Annual Rose Awards; Honorary Secretary of State in Louisiana for her volunteerism

There will be a variety of groups performing dances from their culture. Also snacks will be served. Also Nevada Business is funding this program.

It was founded in 1908 at Howard University. Although Alpha Kappa Alpha is rooted in a Black tradition, membership is opened to women of all races, creeds and colors. Their common bond is service to all mankindThe targeted areas of service include education, health care, economic empowerment, family, leadership, political action, and the arts.Many of our schools have discontinued the Arts in their curricula. Alpha Kappa Alpha has attempted to fill that void by continuing to present programs and activities that heightens the awareness of the arts and give the disadvantaged youths the opportunity and exposure to the arts and support education of the arts. The arts can be a meaningful vehicle for communication and education.The Arts and Humanities Committee of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is requesting support and assistance in co hosting this event. The program will include a lecture and presentation of Flamenco, Mexican Dance, African and a Carribean, Native American and Hawaiian Dance. October 4, 2002Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated Arts and Humanities CommitteeChairperson, Quin RiversThe Multi cultural Dance/Lecture sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Committee will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2002, froml2:00p.m. to 3:00 p.m at the Cambridge Recreation Center located at 3930 Cambridge Street, Las Vegas, Nevada. This venture is co hosted by Nevada Business Services who is providing the monetary funds to pay for the rental of the room, snacks, the dancers and the guitarist. The age group that we are targeting is 13yrs. to 17yrs.The program will include the Madison Movement Dance Troupe which consist of a group of young girls who mostly reside in West Las Vegas. They will perform an African American Dance and a Carribean Dance.Margo Torea will present a presentation on Flamenco and Mexican Dance which will include Video presentation and a performance.Both groups have confirmed . There is also the possibility of that someone will perform a Hawaiian dance.

May 11,2002Alpha Kappa Alpha SororityTheta Theta Omega ChapterArts and Humanities Committee ReportChairPerson, Quin RiversOn May 8, 2002, the Arts and Humanities Committee conducted an art class at H.P. Fitzgerald Elementary School in the morning and afternoon kindergarten class of Soror Gwen Bartlett -Gates.The morning class was instructed by artist, Gail Miller with the assistance of myself and Soror Gwen. There were twenty two students in attendance. The students made Mother’s Day Cards. Each card included a polaroid picture of the student. The students were able to use their creativity by selecting cut outs to create a design and color their design.Ms. Miller was kind enough to furnish all of the supplies that was needed for the students to have a finished project. Ms. Miller donated the washable color markers for the students to keep, as well as the polaroid film for their picture.I expressed my thanks and appreciation to Ms. Miller on behalf of the Arts and Humanities Committee of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.The afternoon kindergarten class also participated in an art project. This project was led by Soror Kenyatta Neal- Johnson along with five students from Bonanza High School who are members of the Black Student Union. They also made Mother’s Day Cards using anagrams to make up a verse from the word Mother’s Day. This project also gave the students an opportunity use their artistic talent.Announcements: The Las Vegas Black Women’s Literacy Guild and The Links, Inc. inviting the public to attend the Chautauqua presentation at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2002 at the Swainston Middle School Theatre, located at 3500 W. Gilmore Avenue, North Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Sandra Kamusikiri will portray the Poet, Author, and Former Slave Phyllis Wheatley. There is no admission charge. This event is funded by the Nevada Humanities Committe, the state affiliate of the National Endowment.

There is also a Paiute Pow Wow which will be held at the Paiute Resort which was the location of our Founder Day Luncheon. The event will be held on May 24, 2002 through May 26, 2002. There will be Arts and Craft for sell as well as dance competition of Native Americans from all over the United States as well as Canada.Admission is $4.00 for adults, students and senior citizens $ 3.00 and children under the age of ten years old is free.
