ECONOMICS REPORT -
Meeting was held on November 2, 2000 at North Area Service Center. In attendance were: Annette Craighead, Andre Denson, Sharon Savage, and Billie Rayford. Soror Annette mailed press releases to local newspapers, radio and television stations. Speakers for Money Smart Youth and Tax Tips sessions were confirmed. Soror Lavonne Lewis and Omega Man Andre Denson will tape the Lillian McMorris Show on November 17, 2000 at 2:30 p.m. Next meeting date is Tuesday, December 5, 2000 at 5:30 p.m. at North Area Service Center.
FOUNDERS DAY REPORT -Meeting was held on November 2, 2000 at North Area Service Center. In attendance were Sorors Jackie Hall, Frances Perry, Kaweeda Adams, Ethel Archibald, Quin Rivers, Ouida Brown, Diana Stith, Dawn Barnes, Wilhelmina Lee, Annette Craighead, Barbara Kirkland and Billie Rayford. Sub-committee reports were presented on Founders Day speaker, program format, tickets, entertainment, and technology presentation. Soror Craighead will print the tickets. KIDS VOTING 2000 PROJECT -On November 7, 2000 at H. P. Fitzgerald Elementary School, four hundred fifty-five (455) students cast their ballots in the Kids Voting 2000 Project. Twenty- two members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority joined the 500+ volunteers who participated in the Kids Voting project in Clark County. Fitzgerald was the polling site adopted by Theta Theta Omega Chapter. Thank you to Soror Yvonne Walker, Principal of Fitzgerald and the fine staff at the school for their assistance and guidance. Kudos to the following sorors for their assistance on this most rewarding project: Kaweeda Adams, Rhoda Anderson, Irma Brooks, Jacki Brown, Ouida Brown, Shirley Carroll, Tanya Flanagan, Jacqueline Hall, Patti Hester, Wilhelmina Lee, Lavonne Lewis, Carolyn Parks, Terri Polite, Maxine Porter, Sami Randolph, Celese Rayford, Tina Rimmey, Donnyss Rucker, Sandra Stewart-Bass, Diane Stith, and Pendelita Toney.

I move that Theta Theta Omega Chapter approve a $250.00 expenditure for the second annual community economics seminar to be held on December 9, 2000 at the Community College of Southern Nevada, West Charleston Campus.

MONEY MATTERS WORKSHOP A SUCCESS!
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Theta Theta Omega Chapter and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Kappa Xi Chapter joined forces on December 11, 1999 at the Community College of Southern Nevada - West Charleston Campus to present "Money Matters," a community economics seminar. Over 120 participants took advantage of the expertise of six dynamic presenters. Especially encouraging was the large representation of members of Greek youth groups including AKA Teens, Omega Gents, and Kappa League.
The success of the seminar is attributed to the efforts of the publicity committee which included: appearances on FOX 5 Morning Show by Soror Lavonne Lewis and Omega Man Eric Lewis; Soror Sharon Savage's presentation on Larry Weekly's Saturday KCEP Radio program; Soror Carolyn Parks and Omega Man Damon Hodge's communication with local community organizations; and public service announcements aired on local radio, television and the print media.
Workshops included the following:
1.
Establishing Good Credit by Eric Adams, an independent consultant, provided tips on how to get your financial house in order by establishing and maintaining good credit.
2.
Insurance, What you need and what you don't! - Leon Pearson, an agent for State Farm Insurance, helped participants discover how much protection one should have, if any, in each of the basic categories: health, auto, disability, home/apartment, and life.
3.
Retirement Planning, Living the Good Life in 2025 - Jeff Ciemons, Field Director for Northwestern Mutual Life, outlined tax-favored retirement plans that are designed to allow savings to grow at a respectable rate such in 401 (k)s, 403(b)s, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), and annuities.
4.
What About Investing in Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds? - Fred Snyder, Financial Analyst, A. G. Edwards & Company assisted participants in determining when it is appropriate to add stocks, bonds, and mutual funds to an investment portfolio and how to select investment tools that are appropriate for specific financial goals.
5.
Real Property Ownership, Oh Give Me A Home! - Brenda Dumas, a licensed real estate agent shared advice on purchasing a home, shopping for a mortgage, and shopping for special mortgage programs.
6.
Money Smart Kids - Ernest Fountain, CEO of Enterprise Federal Credit Union - This session was specifically designed for the younger seminar attendees. The goal of the session was to stress the importance of establishing wise saving, earning, spending, and investing habits.
Fourteen door prizes were distributed at the end of the last session and included two $50 U. S. Savings Bonds, calculators, financial planning books, magazine subscriptions to Black Enterprise and Smart Money, and an Entertainment Savings Book.

Recommendations:
1.
Research grant opportunities to fund the next seminar. Suggestion: Coordinate seminar with a Humanities Project - seek grant to bring in a national economist as a guest speaker.
2.
Distribute evaluations after each session rather than at the end of the seminar.
3.
Seminar location should be closer to the West Las Vegas community. Research facility availability at West Las Vegas Library, Dolittle Community Center, Nevada Partners, CCSN Cheyenne Campus, others
4.
Publicity: Distribute information to churches for inclusion in church bulletins.
5.
Work more closely with youth groups to get more participation in the Minority Scholarships Night activities sponsored by the Clark County School District.
6.
Incorporate financial aid into the Money Smart Kids workshops.
7.
Extend the time of the seminar presentations.
8.
Seminar date: Schedule the seminar earlier in the year, perhaps September or October.
MOTION: I MOVE THAT THE SORORITY AUTHORIZE $132.50 FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF ECONOMICS SEMINAR EXPENSES.
