THE BASILEUS
SPEAKS.........
WELCOME BACK ALL
SORORS
I hope that each of you had a safe, enjoyable, well rested summer. “Well- Rested” was added because we sorors Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority has “our work” cut out for us for the upcoming calendar year.
Sustaining Theta Theta Omega Chapter is and should be our greatest desire. In order to do so, we must bond together to become the fearless sorors that we have been trained to be; stand strong for each other and our sorority. Stay focused with positive energy for the good things we want to acccomplish as a sorority. We can accomplish all of the goals that we as a chapter has and will be setting. Theta Theta Omega Chapter in the year 2000 will make a powerful difference in our community
I would like to extend on behalf of Theta Theta Omega and myself condolences to all sorors who have experienced the loss of a loved one. It is such a trying time. Please take comfort in the Lord. He will watch
Volume 2- Issue 14 September 1999
Elections are coming! Elections are coming! Elections are coming! The following offices are open for the 2000-2002 period: Anti-Basileus, Anti-Grammateus, Tamiochous, Philacter, Graduate Advisor and one Executive Committee Member at Large. A slate will be presented at the October meeting. Nominations from the floor will also be taken at the October meeting. The voting will take place at the November member. We will have the Officer installation ceremony at the December meeting. Although Parlimentarian is listed in our By-laws as an elected position, in order to remain in line with International Sorority policy it will be an appointed position.
The retreat was relaxing, fun, informative, and educational. I had the best time. I wish more sorors could have come to this worthwhile event. The retreat will be planned again for August 2000. Please set this time aside. We will use the retreat to set chapter goals and to develop the program calendar for the next year.
O
Come be a part of the process. We need your help. The program activities that were developed for 2000 will be presented at the Chapter meeting in October. We will also present the chapter goals at that time. We want everyone to be a part of this important process, so come with us next year for some relaxation, fun, information, and education!
Plans are underway to develop a Chapter Brochure. 1 am requesting input on this project. What would you like to see in the brochure? I draft copy will be presented at either the October of November meeting. I hope to have it completed before the end of the year.
Sorors, We need all pictures of any sorority events that have taken place since the last Regional Conference. I will bring bags to put the items in and than they will be stored in a large box waiting for the scrapbook committee to cut them up and paste them down (smile) The committee is looking for pictures, tickets, brochures, flyers, etc. Help us to create the best scrapbook. We also need more members on this committee.
Committee sign up will begin in October. Please make sure you are signing up for at least one committee. There is lots of work to be done.
These committees will begin work in the year 2000. We will also present a sign up sheet for the meeting hostesses and executive committee hostess. Remember this is for the year 2000. We need this information early so the Program Book can be put together in a timely manner.
Chapter dues are due and payable for the 2000 calendar year. Avoid the crowds and pay early. The chapter tax and per capita tax will be sent to the International office no later than January 20, 1999. There will be no exceptions. Dues paid after this time will include the 10% late fee.
MESSAGE TO ALL COMMITTEE CHAIRS,
PLEASE send all Budget requests to Soror Carolyn Parks. Soror Carolyn needs your requests this month so the Budget Committee can present a Budget for the year 2000 at the Cctober sorority meeting.
Sorors don’t wait to submit your requests, you could miss out !!! Be prepared to give them to Soror Carolyn at the next meeting if possible.
Sisterly,
Soror Jackie Hall Baslieus
WORDS FROM THE EDITOR....
IS ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED ‘AKA Y2-K” COMPLIANT ? Did you know that we are less than 122 days from the dawning of a new millennium?
IS THETA THETA OMEGA CHAPTER“LEADERSHIP PREPARED” FOR THE YEAR 2000?
As a general rule, I write a personal article each month. However, I will not bore my “sisters” this month. BET, like Freddy Kruger, “you will say, “SHE’S BACKkkkkkkk”.
Just good stuff...Okay?
On August 5, 1999, Soror Willa L. White showed that “I” can become “Us”. Forty-two sorors and personal friends, renewed our friendship with a WONDERFUL, SUCCESSFUL, “AKA SUMMER COOLER” held at the home of Soror Willa L.White. In attendance were Sorors: Penny Toney, Billie Knight Rayford, Carolyn Parks, Lavonne Lewis, Patti Hester, Sandra Stewart-Bass, Amanda McWilliams, Valerie Lucas, Jackie Brown, Sharon Savage, Sylvia Speed, Dorothy Newman, Jackie Dawson, Beverly Winston, Annette Craghead, Celese Rayford, Marian Burns, Thais Baccus, Barbara Lebron, Janet Rhoden, Dorothy Earle, Lillian Gates, Kaweeda Adams, Shirnice Villano,
Ina Dorman, Ouida Brown, Lois Bolden, Lois T. Ice, Helen Jenkins, Wilhelmina Lee, Edna States, Betty Thomas-Orr, Belisa Brownlee, Rhoda Anderson, Jennifer Jackson, Mildred Harrison, Grace (Mildred’s sister), our Hostesses, Willa L. White, Marlyn (Meady) Goins, & Dr. Ruth L. Green (Ruth Carmen).
Kudos to Soror Angie Armstrong that arrived the next day (9/6/99) looking for a Summer Cooler. Of course, she was entertained by Sorors Willa, Ruth Carmen & Meady.
Our hats and our heart goes out to every Soror that participated by bringing the delicious food items. A BIG hat goes out to Soror Lillian Gates for the “Coconut cake to die for”. It was spectular...
To those sorors that did not attend, you missed a perfect evening of friendship, food, games, and love. Love the old fashioned AKA way.
On Saturday, August 28, 1999, Retired School Psychologist, Soror Willa L. White, challenged each soror attending Theta Theta Omega Chapter’s Summer Retreat that was held on the weekend of August 27- 29th at the Flamingo Hilton Hotel in Laughlin, Nevada, to HARNESS and USE the talents of every soror in AKA. To be prepared to furiously reposition ourselves for the upcoming millennium in order to deliver better service to our sorority, our community and mankind. Our workshops began with “You are here on a purpose”. Soror Willa reminded us that “ As sorors, each of us have lessons to
3
learn, work to do, talents and gifts to give”. With a wonderful introduction with each soror introducing herself with a “positive” adjective we were “off & running”. We were taught how to constructively set sorority Goals, how to structure a sorority yearly calendar utilitizing and implementing these goals, how to “realign” your attitude with an attitude adjustment, Soror Willa reminded us that our sorority is a “We” not an “I” sorority and whatever shows up in our daily lives is a gift, use it and IT’S ALL GOOD. Every soror had to participate in every facet of the workshop. Soror Willa ended her workshop with a message to each of us that “we are the Sorors whose faith and love of the sorority has sustained us thus far. We are the “I am because We are”. We are the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The FIRST and the FINEST”. Our Retreat was wrapped up on Sunday morning with Open devotion for everyone . Thanking the Holy Spirit for his Blessings and reminding us that God’s instructions to us are everywhere if only we tune our ears and open our hearts.
Soror in attendance were: “Wishful Wilhelmina Lee, Positive-Punctual Patti Hester, Marvelous Marian Burns, Lovely Lavonne Lewis, Jolly Jackie Hall, Beautiful Barbara Lebron, Bouncing Billie Knight Rayford, Invigorating Ina Dorman, Crafty Carolyn Parks, Pleasant Penny Toney, Nice Nicole Harvey, Super Stacey Hardy-Desmond and Wonderful Willa White..
Honey-Do’s attending were: Dr. Lee Rayford, Dwight Dorman, Pitt Burns, & Hershel Parks.
Guest attending: Millie Blanford, Verneta Reed, Jamie Hawkins, Jim & Gladys Hunt.
For all sorors not attending, You definitely missed the Retreat of a life time. Plenty of Fun, Movies on the Bus, Hospitality Room & Treats, Excellent show, delightful & delicious food.
Next month, I will return with more on Y2-K and AKA.
We are the Vine that Binds!!
Yours in Sisterhood,
Soror Marian Burns
“WHAT IF I AM A BLACK WOMAN”
Is it a Disease? Weil, if it is, I sure hope it’s catching because they need to pour it into a bottle, label it, and sprinkle it all over the people, Men & Women who ever loved or cried, worked or died, for any one of us.
So..What If 1 Am A Black Woman? Is it a crime? Arrest me ! Because I’m strong, but I am gentle. I am smart, but 1 am learning, I am loving, but I am hateful. And I like to work because I like to eat and feed and clothe, and house me, mine and yours,
and everybody’s, like I’ve been doing for the past 300 years.
So..What If I am A Black Woman? Is it insane? Commit me! Because I want the happiness, not tears, truth, not lies; pleasure not pain; sunshine, not rain; a man, not a child!
So..What If 1 Am A Black Woman? Is it a sin? Pray for me! And pray for you too. If you don’t like women of Color because we are Midnight Black, Chestnut, Brown, Honey Bronzed, Chocolate Covered, Coca Dipped, Big Lipped, Big Hipped, Big Breasted, And Beautiful All At The Same Time !
So..What If I Am A Black Woman? Does it bother you that much?
Because I want a man who wants me, loves me, and trusts me, respects me, and gives me everything I give him Everything Back, Plus !
So..What If I Am A Black Woman? I’ve got Rights, same as you! 1 have worked for them, died for them, lied for them, played and laid for them, on Every Plantation from Alabama to Boston and Back !
So..What If I Am A Black Woman? I Love Me, and I Want You to Love Me Too, but I am, as I’ve always been, Near You, Close to You, Beside You, Strong, Giving, Loving, for over 300 years, Your Black Woman Love Me !

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD HAVE:
One old love she can imagine going back to and one who reminds her how far she has come.
Enough money within her control to move out and rent a place on her own, even if she never wants or needs to.
Something perfect to wear if the employer or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour.
A youth she’s content to move beyond. A past juicy enough that she's looking forward to retelling it in her old age.
The realization that she is actually going to have an old age and some money set aside to help fund it.
A set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra.
One friend who always makes her laugh and one who lets her cry.
A good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her family.
Eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal that will make her guests feel honored.
A resume that is not even the slightest bit padded. A feeling of control over her destiny.
A skin care regime, an exercise routine, and a plan for dealing with those few other facets of life that don't get better after 30.
A solid start on a satisfying career, a satisfying relationship, and all those other facets of life that do get better.
EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW:
How to fall in love without losing herself. How she feels about having kids.
How to quit a job, break up with a lover, and confront a friend without ruining the friendship.
When to try harder and when to walk away. How to have a good time at a party she'd never choose to attend.
How to ask for what she wants in a way that makes it most likely she'll get it
That she can't change the length of her calves, the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents.
That her childhood may not have been perfect, but it's over.
What she would and wouldn't do for love or more. How to live alone, even if she doesn't like it.
Whom she can trust, whom she can't, and why she shouldn't take it personally.
Where to go - be it her best friend's kitchen table or a charming inn Hidden in the woods - when her soul needs soothing.
What she can and can't accomplish in a day, a month, and a year.
“TRUE LOVE”
SORORS:
If you love something, SET IT FREE.
If it comes back, it was, and always will be yours.
If it never returns, it was never yours to begin.
If it just SITS in your living room, MESSES up your “stuff”, EATS your food, USES your telephone, TAKES your money, And never behaves as if you actually SET IT FREE in the first place,
You either MARRIED IT..or GAVE BIRTH TO IT.
SO TRUE..BUT CONTINUE TO LOVE ANYWAY !
AND THEN THERE ARE REFLECTIONS...
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a frayed fan belt and a leaky tire.
It’s a small world. So you gotta use your elbows a lot.
No one is listening until you make a mistake.
Always remember you are unique, just like everyone else.
Never, Never test the depth of the water with both feet.
It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
It is far more impressive when others discover your good qualities without your help.
If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably well worth it.
If you haven’t much education, you must use your brain.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
When someone says, “Do you want my opinion?” - it’s always a negative one.
The word listen contains the same letters as the word silent.
The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.
Scientists say 1 out of every 4 people is crazy. So check out 3 friends..if they are OK, you’re it.
Pain and suffering are inevitable, but misery is optional.

MARCH 1999
NEW BEGINNINGS.......
THE BASILEUS SPEAKS
Dear Sorors,
I am excited to report that we have 56 financial members in Theta Theta Omega as of February 6, 1999 !!! I am so happy to see that we are retaining sorors.
The Mardi Gras Ball was a roaring success. My family members had a fantastic time. My niece (Victoria) and her boyfriend were in all likelihood the youngest people in attendance. The both of them are only eighteen years old. They said, “without a doubt, they had a fabulous time”; and they are looking forward to attending next year.
We have several programming events coming up and I would like to remind you soror to please mark these events on your calendars. The events are: Founders’ Day Luncheon, NBLIC Conference in April; the African Shoe Box Project, Scholarship Award Ceremony; Economic Seminar, Black Dollar Month; Kappa Xi Rush and Intake Weekend. It is imperative that we give full support with these programs. If you are on the committees in charge of these events, please support them by attending. We will become stronger if we stand together and support one another.
I would like to see a large number of sorors attend the Regional Conference. It will be one of the least expensive conferences in regards to transportation. Delegates receive money from the chapter that can be applied towards registration costs or transportation. The chapter is entitled to five delegates.
The Chapter Report has been mailed. The report arrived in the International Headquarters before February 1,1999. The EAF report has also been mailed. Thank You Soror Lisa McNeil for your hard work. Soror Jacki Brown has mailed in the volunteers hours also. Please sorors, keep an accurate track of your volunteer hours for 1999.
Sorors:
X J Our February Sorority meeting was different from all the others that we s.. have held. Different in that, our 0U Chaplain, Soror Barbara Kirkland, began with a prayer and an
A inspirational reading that sent a
IV - powerful message to all of us. Soror / Barbara reminded us of our obligation to each other as sisters. She also told us how important it was to show that you sincerely care. Because tomorrow is not guaranteed to us as it was with the case of Soror Janice Clark that has gone beyond the Ivy Wall. (Soror Janice became an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman in October 1998).
We shared our silence and sorrow for our sister, Soror Janice and for her family.
As Pope Leo XHI stated, “No one is so rich that he does not need another’s help; no one so poor as not to be useful in some way to his fellow man”.
‘braying’ -or- whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together and told them what had happened and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out his misery.
Initially, the old mule was hysterical ’.!!! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back..A thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back..HE SHOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP !! This he did, blow after blow.
“Shake it off and step up..Shake it off and step up..Shake it off and step up!” he repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or distressing the situation seemed the old mule fought “panic” and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP !!
You’re right! It wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, STEPPED TRIUMPHANTLY OVER THE WALL OF THAT WELL ! What seemed like it would bury him actually blessed him..all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.
Sisterly,
Soror Jackie Hall
We must continue to build strong sisterly relations. These relations must be based on the values that the founders of our precious sorority demonstrated to each other. Let us enjoy being sisterly. This bonding process should never end.
SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP
A farmer owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s well.
The farmer heard the mule
2
THAT’S LIFE I If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity..THE ADVERSITIES THAT COME ALONG TO BURY US USUALLY HAVE WITHIN THEM THE POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT AND BLESS US !
Remember that FORGIVENESS - FAITH - PRAYER - PRAISE - AND HOPE...all are excellent ways to “SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP” out of the wells in which we find ourselves !!
Yours Sisterhood, Soror Marian Burns
MARDI GRAS
AKA MARDI GRAS
BALL WAS A
BIGgggggg
SUCCESS !!!!!
Our second annual Mardi Gras Ball was a BIG success. Soror Patti Hester chaired the Ball and her co- chair was Soror Shirley Carroll.
The Rio Suites Hotel Main Grand Ballroom was decorated and aglow with the beautiful table decorations
of Mardi Gras masks in colors of gold, purple, and green atop table mirrors (each one individually cleaned by Soror Carolyn Parks). Each table was accented with table sprinkles that matched the green, purple & gold table linen colors. There were anchored balloons that formed an arch upon entering. Special Kudos to Soror Ina Dorman that designed and made all of the decorations.
Soror Patti & Soror Shirley sends special thank-you’s to every member of the Ways & Means Committee, Honey-Do’s, Honey- Don’t’s, and personal friends that assisted with decorating. This joint effort really paid off.
In case you missed the ball, let me fill you in.....AKA Sorors and their
guest were formally welcomed to the fabulous Rio Suites Hotel and Casino Grand ballroom by the featured Star of the Masquerade In The Sky Parade, “Sonny-Do”, Brian Bywaters. Brian was “decked” out in his Royal Blue Sequin Rio Zoot Suit for his 10:00 performance. He son of our own, Soror Willa Bywaters White. AKA Sorors were introduced as we all stepped to the AKA INTERNATIONAL STROLL !!! (Led by our “High Steppers” Sorors Belissa Brownlee, Kaweeda Adams, & Jackie’ Brown). IT WAS WONDERFUL and A TON OF FUN !!
Our Mistress of Ceremony, Rose McKinney James, did an outstanding job in her introductions, reading our 3
V
proclamations, and telling the
4 audience the history of Mardi Gras.
The Second-line Dance with Sorors leading the line spinning our Mardi Gras umbrellas was absolutely breath-taking. Our audience participation in this Grand New Orleans Style second line dance was fanastic.
(Did you happen to see the “ New Orleans Adams Family”- Kaweeda, Eric, & The Adams doing the “original” Louisiana second line dance? OH YES, IT WAS THE REAL DEAL, O.K !
The Band was great and had everyone on the floor doing the Electric Slide. They were “jamming” BIG TIME.
The food was delicious with a selection to die for , Louisiana red beans and rice, fried catfish, chicken, beef tips, Jambalaya, New Orleans style shrimp & rice, sliced & diced fruit, assorted cheeses, assorted salads, yams, corn bread, hot rolls, and of course the deliteful desserts (with all the calories removed).
The crowning moment....The Mardi Gras Royal Court Members were presented. Soror Carolyn Parks & Honey-Do Hershel; Soror Shirley Carroll & Honey-Do Leo; Soror Marian Bums & Honey-Do Pitt and Soror Billie K. Rayford & Honey-Do Lee.
Soror Billie K Rayford and her Honey Do, Dr. Lee Rayford were selected as the Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority 1999 Mardi Gras King and Queen. Our 1998 Queen Soror Willa Bywaters White relinquished her crown and her Royal Robe to Queen Billie K Soror Ina Dorman stood in for our deceased Beloved King, Kenny White. She crowned King Lee and draped him in his Royal Robe. Bowing to standing ovations, our new King & Queen & her Royal Court did their royal dance.
CONGRATULATIONS TO HER MAJESTY QUEEN BILLIE & KING DR. LEE RAYFORD !!!!
The Ball was enjoyed by all (in spite of the table assignment mix-ups). Sorors, pat yourselves on the back.....’’YOU DONE GOOD”.
(P.S. Soror Ina Dorman & her daughter, Soror Shirnice Dorman- Villano also designed & made the Beautiful Royal King & Queen Robes). Thanks a Bunch!

THOUGHT OF THE MONTH
EIGHT GIFTS THAT DO NOT COST A CENT
1)
THE GIFT OF LISTENING...
But you must REALLY listen.
No interrupting, no daydreaming, no planning your response. Just listening.
2)
THE GIFT OF AFFECTION...
Be generous with appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back and handholds.
Let these small actions demonstrate the love you have for family and friends.
3)
THE GIFT OF LA UGHTER...
Clip cartoons.
Share articles and funny stories.
Your gift will say, "I love to laugh with you."
4)
THE GIFT OF A WRITTEN NOTE... It can be a simple 7
'Thanks for the help" note or a full sonnet A brief, handwritten note may be remembered for a lifetime, and may even change a life.
5) THE GIFT OF A COMPLIMENT...
A simple and sincere, "You look great in pink and green," "You did a super job. or 'That was a wonderful meal" can make someone's day.
6)
THE GIFT OF A FA VOR...
Every day, go out of your way to do something kind.
7)
THE GIFT OF SOLITUDE...
There are times when we want nothing better than to be left alone.
Be sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to others.
8)
THE GIFT OF A CHEERFUL
DISPOSITION...
The easiest way to feel good is to extend a kind word to someone, really it's not that hard to say, Hello or Thank You.
Friends are very rare jewels indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear; they share a word of praise; and they always want to open their hearts to us.
Respectfully submitted,
Soror Billie Rayford, Hodegos

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
ALWAYS COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS...
SHOULD YOU FIND IT HARD TO GET TO SLEEP TONIGHT; JUST REMEMBER THE HOMELESS FAMILY WHO HAS NO BED TO LIE IN.
SHOULD YOU FIND YOURSELF STUCK IN TRAFFIC; DON’T DESPAIR, THERE ARE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD FOR WHOM DRIVING IS AN UNHEARD OF PRIVILEGE.
SHOULD YOU HAVE A BAD DAY AT WORK; THINK OF THE MAN WHO HAS BEEN OUT OF WORK FOR THE LAST 3 MONTHS.
SHOULD YOU DESPAIR OVER A RELATIONSHIP GONE BAD; THINK OF THE PERSON WHO HAS NEVER KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO LOVE AND BE LOVED IN RETURN.
SHOULD YOU GRIEVE THE PASSING OF ANOTHER WEEKEND; THINK OF THE WOMAN IN SOME THIRD WORLD COUNTRY, WORKING 12 HOURS A DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK, FOR $15 TO FEED HER FAMILY.
SHOULD YOUR CAR BREAK DOWN, LEAVING YOU MILES AWAY FROM ASSISTANCE; THINK OF THE PARAPLEGIC WHO WOULD LOVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE THAT WALK.
SHOULD YOU NOTICE A NEW GRAY HAIR IN THE MIRROR; THINK OF THE CANCER PATIENT IN CHEMO WHO WISHES SHE HAD HAIR TO EXAMINE.
SHOULD YOU FIND YOURSELF AT A LOSS AND PONDERING; WHAT IS LIFE ALL ABOUT, WHAT IS MY PURPOSE? BE THANKFUL, THERE ARE THOSE WHO DIDN’T LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO GET THE OPPORTUNITY.
SHOULD YOU FIND YOURSELF THE VICTIM OF OTHER PEOPLE’S BITTERNESS, IGNORANCE, SMALLHES&OR INSECURITIES^.
REMEMBER, THINGS COULD BE WORSE; YOU COULD BE THEM I
SHOULD YOU DECIDE TO SEND THIS TO A FRIEND; YOU MIGHT BRIGHTEN SOMEONE’S DAYS’!1;

Sorors,
Never judge a book by its cover. At times we tend to put people in a category because of the way we see them. We don’t take the time to get to know them well. The most well put together person on the outside may be falling apart on the inside. The person you view as not having it together on the outside maybe the most intelligent, creative person you will ever meet.
I would like all of us to get to know one another on a deeper level. This can be accomplished by serving on a committee with other sorors you don’t know as well as others. It can be accomplished by attending sorority sponsored events and interacting with a sorors in the chapter.
Sorors, we should step out of our comfort zone and try something new; be a hostess with a group of newly reactivated or transfer sorors, or serve on a committee you have never served on before.
All of these things will help each one of us to grow as sisters and you may make a new friend.
I want everyone to feel needed and included in the coming year. Let’s make an effort to stretch ourselves. I can assure you that you will find a new bridge partner, computer geek, reading fanatic, or craft person to add to your collection of friends.
Sisterly,
Soror Jackie
CONTINUING WORDS FROM THE BASILEUS...
The yearly sorority report will be mailed on January 20, 2000. All committee chairs are asked to submit a year end report by December 15, 1999, at the Executive Committee meeting. The report should include everything that has taken place in 1999. Any events scheduled after December 15, 1999, and before January 1, 2000 should be included in this report.
AKA TEEN TEA..
The AKATeen Tea was held on September 25, 1999 at the North Las Vegas Library. In attendance were ten young ladies interested in becoming AKATeens. Sorors in attendance were: Soror Jackie Hall, Belisa Brownlee, Amanda McWilliams, and Lisa McNeil. The young ladies were given a fact sheet and other handouts about the AKATEEN program. Soror Brownlee lead the group in an ice breaker and introduction session. Soror McNeil had the young ladies acting out various animals and inanimate objects. This game required creativity and team work. Sorors Amanda, Belisa and Jackie, acted as judges for
the game. Prizes were also given out.
The next AKATEEN meeting will be held on Saturday, October 9, 1999, at the North Las Vegas Library. We will begin at 1:30 p.m. Each young lady has been asked to bring a friend. If there is a young lady that a soror would like to recommend as an AKATEEN, you can send or bring your recommendation(s) to the next meeting on October 9th. Sorors we need more committee members to work with this group.
Sisterly,
Soror Jackie
WORDS FROM THE EDITOR....
Dear Sorors,
Have you asked yourself, the same question that I have?
What is the “Millennium”? What is “Y2-K”? Why is the concept or the word so heavily laden with symbolic and/or psychological powers?
What effect will the new “Millennium” have on African Americans? Or is it just “another year”?
I thought about it and I realized that this is a time in our lives that each of us should celebrate the coming of the new year, the new century, the new millennium. When you really, really, really, think seriously about it; even with “time” on our side, we will NEVER ever live to see the dawning of another century come in.
Then in retrospect, over the past years up to the present time, each of us have witnessed the lost of love ones, family & friends. The witnessing of this simple transition from mortal to immortal does indeed cause us to question your purpose in life. We find ourselves running from
one place to another, going to a meeting every night, if not every other night. Are we ready to resolve to slow the pace, prioritize and focus on what really matters in life AND what is important in your lives? God, Family, & Friends in that order?
Have we as sorors forgotten the purpose of our journey as members of the FIRST and the FINEST sorority.. “SERVICE TO ALL MANKIND”? Our Basileus is inviting each of us to embrace, uplift and help build for the future of Theta Theta Omega Chapter. We can work together to create a new agenda that will benefit the communities. Our founders fifty years ago had the courage to stand strong together, organize locally and nationally and move forward positively for the good of the sorority. We as sorors have grown and benefited from a long and glorious legacy built on love, faith and commitment. As sorors we must fulfil our promise to serve, enhance and uplift our communities. We are the carriers of merit and culture. We must continue to serve all mankind. We are the Vine that Binds
Yours in Sisterhood, Soror Marian Burns
