Committee Report
May 2, 1998
Presented by: Lisa Russell
The April, 1998 activities for the NLVCC experienced minor problems with coordinating volunteer hours with the staff. A meeting was held with the management at the facility. April, 1998 birthday party was not well attended due to the schedule conflicts with the AKATeens. Otherwise, we were wellreceived by from the staff and thankful for our participation with the residents.
The Adopt-A-Grandparent Program will have a Cook out for the residents at the North Las Vegas Care Center on May 9, 1998 at 12:00noon. The AkaTeens will perform for the residents as the celebrate National Nursing Home Week.
In addition, we need volunteers for the event to help assist the residents and staff, and to provide overall companionship for the residents. If you are interested, a sign up sheet is available. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
The female residents will also be acknowledged for Mother’s Day, 1998. There are approximately 76 female residents to give gift baskets on the 10th of May. The Director of Activities will be providing the baskets for the residents. We need volunteers to stuff the baskets and donate items for the baskets. The filing of the baskets will be held at Soror Lisa Russell’s home on May 8, 1998 at 7:30pm. The North Las Vegas Care Center will be donating food for the “stuffing party”. If you are interested, please sign up and list what item you would like to donate or task you will be willing to complete.
The May birthday Celebration will be held on May 23, 1998 for the May birthday residents at the nursing facility at 11:00am. We ask that any soror who is interested to help at the party, we need Sorors to “mingle” with the residents and assist in the activity. We will also be serving the cake to the residents who are unable to attend the “party” Please see Soror Lisa Russell after the meeting.
To the committee members, due to our busy schedules, please meet with Soror Lisa Russell after the meeting to give a day that you are available to discuss activity and suggestions.
Due to prior conflicts early on in the volunteer program, a meeting was held with the Facility Administrator on April 16th. It was a success, and an open communication was re-establish with the facility and Sorors who volunteer their time. Please see me at the conclusion of the meeting.

The activities for the North Las Vegas Care Center has been delayed due to other Soror commitments, obligations, and chapter programs. However, communication have been re-established with the facility activities Director Ms. Claudine Joseph, and enthusiasm was high. Other Greek organizations, have been regulary donated time to the facility, but support from Alpha Kappa Alpha was strongly encouraged.
For the Christmas Holiday, a banner and monthly calendar was given to the center on behalf of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The facility requests that such a calendar be provided on a monthly basis. In addition, Christmas decorations are needed to decorate a tree which the center has donated on behalf of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Decoration ideas are needed in addition to volunteers to help decorate the tree. The facility requests that we do so on December 12, 1998 or sooner.
If you are interested in decorating the Christmas tree, please do so by signing the sheet provided. In addition, Alpha Kappa Alpha presence is strongly requested at the facility at least monthly, and ideas are strongly encouaraged. Due to the holiday and Mardi Gras preparations, a telephone meeting of the committee members will be set at a date and time to be announced.
I move that $30.00 be donated by the chapter towards the cost of Christmas decorations for the Senior Citizen Program for the North Las Vegas Care Center.
I move that the Senior Citizen Program report be accepted as read.
