Kappa Xi donated $75.00 to AIDS for AIDS of Nevada and walked in the AIDS Walk for the second year in a row. We walked from Macy’s at the Fashion Show Mall to the New York New York Hotel and back to Macy’s. This year the program increased the number of teams that walked.
Soror Darlena Gunn competed in the Alpha Phi Alpha Miss Black and Gold Pageant in Denver, Colorado at the Alpha’s Convention. She was selected as the second runner-up.
Kappa Xi implemented an academic incentive program. For all “A’s” received, each soror receives a raffle ticket. The winner receives a gift certificate to various bookstores, stores, or restaurants. The first winner for the month of March was Soror Erica lohnson.
Kappa Xi members are planning inexpensive fundraisers. The first was a bake sell in which they raised $31.00 dollars. They are looking into other possibilities such as, car washes, World’s Finest chocolate, an outdoor party, etc.
In conjunction with the UNLV Student Health Center, Kappa Xi handed out Safer Sex Spring Break Packets. The packets included condoms, first aid kits, and a note from Kappa Xi encouraging students to be safe over the break.
Interviews were conducted for three candidates on March 1, 1998. All three candidates received favorable votes. The information was forwarded to the Regional Director via fax for approval. The information was lost and faxed again. Kappa Xi received approval for MIP on April 2, 1998. The information has been sent to the National Office. MIP was initially scheduled for April 17-19, but due to the aforementioned mishap had to be rescheduled. MIP will take place at the home of Soror Lea Alves April 24-26.
Kappa Xi had several Sisterly Relations activities. We went shopping and out to lunch at the Cheesecake Factory inside the Ceasar’ s Forum Shops. There was a surprise birthday party for Kappa Xi Basileus, Patricia Betts at the home of Soror Lea. We had a great time and played the games TABOO and GUESSTURES.

    May 2, 1998
As reported last month, Kappa Xi were awaiting for approval for three eligible candidates to proceed with the Membership Intake Process (MIP). Approval was granted from the National office for only two of the candidates. The ineligible candidate had the correct cumulative grade point average (GPA), but she did not have the correct semester GPA.
MIP was held at the home of Soror Lea Alves April 24 through April 26. Soror Erica Johnson did an outstanding job preparing for the weekend. All of the undergraduate sorors did a great job making the workshops interactive and interesting. Thanks to Soror Carolyn Parks for attending the weekend, as well as to Jackie Hall, Rhoda Anderson, Jackie Henry, Belisa Brownlee, and Denise Williams for attending part of the workshops on Saturday. Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. we attended services at St. James Catholic Church, and a luncheon reception was held at the Olive Garden for the two new members of Kappa Xi. Thanks to Soror Jackie Brown for attending that luncheon. The new members of Kappa Xi are Wilisha Moore and Tomeka Sullivan.
In order to heighten awareness about breast cancer, the members of Kappa Xi handed out Buddy Check packets on campus to encourage women to conduct self breast exams. Due to the blood shortage, Kappa Xi arranged for United Blood Services (UBS) to set up a blood drive on campus. The final count is not in as to the number of pints of blood that were collected, but more than 60 people signed up to donate. Another organization had a blood drive on campus before and only collected 7 pints, so UBS was thrilled with the turn out garnered by Kappa Xi.
Kappa Xi are making plans to plant a vegetable garden/garden at the North Las Vegas Care Center. They are contacting places to donate the items. They are also considering participating with Theta Theta Omega with the monthly birthday parties.
For the Business Roundtable program target, Kappa Xi donated money to the Economic Opportunity Board of Clark County’s Microbusiness Program. It is a program that encourages entrepreneurship in the African American community.
Kappa Xi served as judges for an essay contest for local middle schools. The essay was entitled ‘ Do the Write Thing." Students were encouraged to write their ideas about how to reduce and eliminate violence. They are in the process of receiving information from area high schools to recognize those students who have excelled in Advanced Placement Math and Science.
Three members of Kappa Xi were recognized at a reception sponsored by the Alliance of Professionals of African Heritage. Sorors Patricia Betts and Erica Johnson received awards for Outstanding Academic Achievement. Soror Lea Alves was recognized for Outstanding Academic Achievement, the Roosevelt Fitzgerald Outstanding Student Award Nominee, and the Thomas E. Wilson Community Service Award winner for Civic and Community Service which included $200 dollars.
Soror Shawna McNair was selected to represent the University of Nevada Las Vegas at an all expenses paid conference in Jamaica. The conference was for meeting planning hotel management, and special events and was held in the beginning of April.
There were not enough sorors that expressed interest in becoming Field Registrars to warrant a special session. A schedule will be given to interested sorors, and once all have been trained Voter Registration drives will be arranged in the community.
There are plans to help defray costs for a young lady to attend Girls State in Washington, DC. The program gives young ladies the opportunity to see how politics operate, and they will be able to meet political figures
Kappa Xi was represented at the Las Vegas Wash and Wetlands Clean-Up Project. They cleaned up in the desert in the area behind Sam Boyd Stadium.
Patricia Betts and Darlena Gunn were voted by the chapter to be delegates for Boule to be held in Chicago in July.
An end of the year picnic is tentatively scheduled for May 9 at 4:00 p.m. on the campus of . UNLV. One former member (Tonya Spencer graduated in December and is a general member) and one current member(Lea Alves) of Kappa Xi will be graduating on May 16. Erica Johnson will be transferring to Spellman College in the fall.

Kappa Xi has received approval from international headquarters and the regional director to proceed with the membership intake process. Four candidates were submitted for approval. One candidate was denied because she was not a full-time student in the spring. Another candidate was pending approval subject to completing the Affirmation Statement. A time was scheduled to meet with that candidate to complete the form, but she never showed up and has not been heard from since. Another Rush will be held spring 1999.
Two candidates will proceed with the process as scheduled for November 20-22, 1998 at the home of Soror Lea Alves. The luncheon will be held at the Macaroni Grill on the comer of Rainbow and Lake Mead. Due to the small number of sorors who attended last year’s luncheon, the undergraduates decided not to have a specific menu prepared. A list is being circulated for those who wish to attend the luncheon so that reservations can be secured for the appropriate number. If you are uncertain please noti Shawna McNair at 895- 5234 by November 18,1998.
Soror Shawna participated during the recent Graduate chapter membership intake process. I am proud to say that she has also been nominated for Resident Advisor of the month. Soror Shawna is the grammateus for Kappa Xi and serves as membership chair. The most improved GPA award for the spring semester went to Soror Shawna with a 3.24 and the highest GPA award went to Soror Tomeka with a 3.49.
The members of Kappa Xi decided to hold study sessions together. On the Sunday’s that they don’t meet, they will meet at the library and study for 2 hours.
Kappa Xi has scheduled a SAT/ACT workshop for Saturday, November 14, at 11:00 a.m. The workshop will be held on the campus of UNLV on the second floor of the Moyer Student Union.
In an effort to bridge the gap between being a candidate and becoming a new member, Kappa Xi is in the developmental stages of putting a series of workshops together. There is not a time to transition into the chapter after MIP especially having a small chapter. You are immediately put to work. Other workshops are also being planned. The topics will include, staying on your p’s and q’s, business writing, responsibilities of a committee chair, etc.
October was National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The members of Kappa Xi wore their pink pins and distributed pink ribbons and disseminated information on breast cancer October 26-October 30.
Once a month, the Graduate Advisor attends the Greek Advisory Council meeting. The meeting is comprised of advisors from all the greek organizations that are recognized on campus.
Kappa Xi has a representative from the chapter to attend the Ethnic Student Council, the National Panhellenic, and Organization Board (O-Board) meetings. There was a question as to whether or not Alpha Kappa Alpha was going to be recognized by O-Board. They semester because they started to enforce the rule this semester that in order to be recognized by O-Board an organization must have 10 members. A letter was written to the president of UNLV and the Vice-president of student services expressing our dissatisfaction with O-Board’s decision. After we explained we had been on the campus for over two decades and that we were willing to go to whatever extremes necessary to be recognized, the matter was resolved.
Kappa Xi scheduled a new account sign-up for the West Side Federal Credit Union on campus. This was for the business round table program target.
The AKA’s and the Alpha’s had a tailgate party for the homecoming game, and they participated in homecoming activities with the National Panhellenic.
Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi Alpha designated November 1-7 as Skee-Phi Week.
    Sunday, November 1
Members of both organizations attended Second Baptist Church. The Graduate Chapter made a contribution to the youth organization at the church. After church we went to lunch together.

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED THETA THETA OMEGA CHAPTER
SUBMITTED BY: SHARON Y. SAVAGE, GRADUATE ADVISOR
1SS6 INTER-MOUNTAIN CLUSTER CONFERENCE UNDERGRADUATE LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SUMMARY
HOSTED BY: ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED, ETA EPSILON OMEGA CHAPTER, TUCSON, ARIZONA
1998 Inter-Mountain Cluster Conference and Undergraduate Leadership Institute was held in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday, October 17, 1998. There was a total of 50 sorors in attendance graduate and undergraduate.
Inter-Mountain Cluster Conference began with a general session which consisted of the welcome, meditation, AKA Sing!, greetings, roll call, and registration report. Cluster officers were then appointed. The Grammateus was Soror Jacquenese A. Price (Eta Epsilon Omega) and the Philacters were Soror Andrea Lafitte and Soror Chantali Hammond (Iota Tau). The 1997 cluster conference budget was presented and the appropriation of excess funds from the 1998 cluster conference was discussed. A motion passed for excess funds to return to the host chapter.
The Far West Regional Director, Soror Grace B. Strauther gave remarks on “Blazing New Trails.” Soror Grace talked about the Regional Director’s newsletter, “20/20 News and Views.” She said the newsletter is for everyone, and it is up to each chapter to decide how to share the information. She emphasized the importance of marketing the sorority as an international organization. Soror Grace said that we must thing “big.” Soror Grace went on to discuss the direction of the sorority under the direction of the new Supreme Basileus, Norma S. White. A Leadership Institute was held in August in Florida. During the Leadership Institute, the Directorate adopted the appointments of the Supreme Basileus. Soror Grace stated that was the best training she had ever received on a professional level or as a member of the sorority. She also commented that everything started on time and ended on time.
Workshops for the Cluster Conference included; “EAF Blazing the Trail to Educational Conquest,” “Voter Alert,” “S.T.O.M.P. Programs,” “Doing it Right With Love: Reclaim 2000 by 2000,” “Chapter Operations: Is Your Chapter House In Order?” and “Winning the Wellness Game.”
The sessions attended for the Undergraduate Leadership Institute were “Straight Talk: Handling Transitions and Meeting the Challenge of Leadership in a Diverse World,” “S.T.O.M.P. Out Hazing,” and “Blaze New Trails: Enhance and Promote Undergraduate Leadership.” Outers are now open to inactive sorors in an effort to give them firsthand information and the opportunity to. reactivate on-site at the conference. Soror Grace encouraged sorors to try to reactivate inactive sorors. An inactive soror is allowed to attend one chapter meeting. She also said that one should not have to twist sorors arms to hold office if things are running right in the chapter.
Soror Grace stated that it is a misnomer to refer to the office in Chicago as “nationals.” The correct reference would be international headquarters or headquarters.
The fall mailing will include the new program targets, a suggested program calendar, and the revised manual for the undergraduate and graduate MIP process. Black dollar day has been changed to Global Dollars Month. Undergraduate Round Up is now referred to as Undergraduate Leadership Institute
According to Soror Grace, there are basically two categories of members graduate and undergraduates. Once you graduate, you should not be stepping with the undergraduates unless it is a special occasion. General members or members of other chapters are not allowed to step either.
EAF has changed from rockets to degrees such as bachelors, masters and doctorate to keep in line with the educational theme. EAF is the non-profit arm of AKA, and all chapters must contribute and they should also try to get corporate sponsors to contribute on behalf of that chapter. The Men of Distinction has been replaced with Men of Money. Women of Excellence have been added. This is so that non-sorors are able to donate. There is an 8-minute video on EAF available to order.

Kappa Xi held Rush on September 26, 1998 on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Approximately 10 young ladies attended Rush. Four young ladies turned in completed information packets. Three out of the four are eligible to be interviewed. There is a question about the eligibility of one young lady. There is a question about whether or not she is eligible because she was only enrolled in the spring for 6 credits which is not considered foil-time. In the summer, the young lady took 12 credits. A call was put into the Far Western Regional Director for clarification, but as of the writing of this report there has been no response.
Thank you to the following graduate sorors who attended Rush; Jacqueline Hall, Carolyn Parks, Patti Hester, Sandra Stewart Bass, Rhoda Anderson, and Belisa Brownlee. The sorors in the undergraduate chapter enjoy the sisterhood that is shared when graduate members participate in activities with them.
Interviews are scheduled for four candidates on October 3, 1998. The interviews will be held on the campus of UNLV at 4:00 p.m.
The membership intake process is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of November 20-22, 1998. Due to the vote of the Directorate, the 3-day process will be utilized instead of the 10-day process as previously reported.
Kappa Xi held a Voter Registration Drive in order to register people before the October 3, 1998 deadline. The registration drive was for the Washington, DC presence program target. They also had a Bake Sale on campus Wednesday, September 30,1998.
On Sunday, October 4, Kappa Xi will host an afternoon of bingo with the residents of the North Las Vegas Care Center. The members of Kappa Xi baked goodies and delivered them to the seniors at the Doolittle Senior Center. Both of these activities were for the Senior Residence program target.
Kappa Xi is planning a SAT/ACT preparation workshop for high school students. The facilitator will be a counselor from Cimmaron Memorial high school. The tentative date is October 31, 1998.
Kappa Xi sponsored a “change” (spare change) drive for the Sickle Cell Foundation. It was done in an effort to promote awareness of the sickle cell anemia disease. The money raised will be donated to the local sickle cell office, and Kappa Xi voted to match the funds raised.
