    THE R-J GOES TO A PARTY
    UNLV launches fundraising campaign
    UNLV President Carol
    Harter in her 11th
    annual State of the
    University address
    announced a $500 million
    fundraising effort titled
    “Secure the Future.”
    Harter hopes the campaign,
    which actually began behind
    the scenes in 2002, will reach
    its goal by June 30,2008. The
    University of Nevada, Las
    Vegas had already collected
    $263 million in pledges
    and donations before the
    public announcement of the
    campaign Sept. 15.
    That same evening, the
    UNLV Foundation and the
    UNLV Alumni Association
    invited supporters to
    a special celebration
    launching the school’s first
    comprehensive fundraising
    campaign. The arena floor
    of the Thomas & Mack
    Center was transformed
    into a stylish dining and
    entertainment venue to
    honor alumni, the campus
    community and donors who
    support UNLV.
    Guests were asked to valet
    park at the Cox Pavilion
    tunnel entrance to walk the
    red carpet amid scarlet and
    gray balloon bouquets onto
    the pavilion floor for the
    event’s reception. Harter
    and the campaign’s honorary
    chairs Joyce Mack and
    Bill Boyd were joined by
    campaign chairman Don
    Snyder in welcoming guests.
    Among the guests were
    Vicki and Frank Fertitta Jr.,
    Diane and Robert Bigelow,
    Mel Wolzinger, Sue and Jerry
    Lykins, Ted Quirk, Sande and
    Sanford Berman, J.A. Tiberti,
    Nancy and J.K. Houssels,
    and the Ernest A. and Mary
    Becker family.
    Socializing over cocktails
    and canapes were Tamara
    and Jay Kommayer, Joyce
    Dorothy Huffey
    ON THE SCENE
    and Steve Schneider, Kathy
    and Tom Burkholder, Cheryl
    Purdue, Mannetta and
    Michael Braumstein, Janet

    Guests dined on spinach
    salad, an entrde duo of
    beef and shrimp scampi
    accompanied by wild rice
    with pine nuts, and a dessert

    Selected wines were from
    Southern Wine & Spirits.
    Dan Van Epp, chairman of
    UNLV’s Foundation Board
    of Trustees, welcomed the
    capacity crowd. Catherine
    Snelson introduced student
    speakers Maria Parra-
    Sandoval and Dominique
    Beaumonte. Also introduced
    was Jon Eric Cobain, 1964
    student body president of
    UNLV’s first graduating class.
    A video on UNLV’s history
    followed.
    Sheena Easton, recording
    star, Las Vegas resident
    and recent inductee into the
    Las Vegas Hall of Fame,
    performed her classic hits
    from film and Broadway.
    Party For All Occasions:
    Sandra and Jim Frank
    reserved the Hookah Lounge
    at Paymon’s Mediterranean
    Restaurant at 8380 W.
    Sahara Ave. on Sept. 13 for a
    threefold celebration of their
    recent birthdays and wedding
    anniversary.
    Many of the guests,
    including the hostess and host,
    came dressed in their Middle
    Eastern garb purchased
    abroad from their vacations.
    Among their 50 guests
    enjoying cuisine indigenous
    to the Mediterranean were
    Beverly and Mike Mykisen,
    Persia and James Golden,
    Sondra and Robert Mann,
    Mari and Thom Landers, Lia
    Roberts, Charlotte Barnes,
    Ruth and Jack Lillis, Terri
    and Tom Eden, Jeanne
    Greenawalt, Dorrie and Don
    Kemp, Phyllis Ann Haley,
    Elaine and Jim Garrison,
    Ester Bergman, and Monica
    and David Fuller.
    Three belly dancers
    provided the evening’s
    entertainment.

    One More Time: On the
    evening of Sept. 16, Susan and
    Bill Houston had a birthday
    party for Margie Conway at
    their Spanish Ttail home. It
    was a significant birthday
    for Margie, and one that
    warranted a celebration in
    grand style. The party theme
    was 1920s flapper dress,
    Charleston dancing and all
    that jazz.
