PHYSICIAN’S OATH
The Physician's Oath represents the tradition of professional obligations central to being a physician. In reciting the oath, physicians willingly take on the traditions and moral commitments of the profession, and become part of a moral community that seeks to help and to heal.
Physicians commit themselves to a profession; a life of noble service to humanity.
On my honor,
I take this oath with great reverence as I embark on my lifelong journey as a physician. I am privileged to be a member of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine Inaugural Class and commit myself to the medical profession before those who have supported me and made this moment possible.
To my patients,
I go forth impassioned to serve all by seeking to understand and accept what makes each patient unique. I am dedicated to treat and care for the whole person by being invested in their holistic well-being. I will adapt to the dynamic needs of my patients, advocating for their welfare and striving to respond with competence and compassion. I will remain empathetic while exercising honesty and tact.
To my community,
I recognize my responsibility to ensure access to quality healthcare for each individual. To raise the standard of health in our society, I will act as a beacon of knowledge and will advocate for the health system in times of both stability and turbulence.
To my peers and mentors,
I value that our profession was built from a collaborative effort and realize the generations ahead will be built with the same combined spirit. I aspire to uphold the integrity of our field by supporting my colleagues while holding them accountable. I endeavor to advance medicine through innovation, research, and evidence-based practice.
To myself,
I pledge to lead by example, caring for myself as I would for others, anticipating my own needs and protecting my joy. Recognizing that I have limitations, I will strive for excellence through selfreflection, refuse to accept complacency, and commit myself to a lifetime of learning. When my assumptions are challenged, I will adapt thoughtfully, with compassion, integrity, and an open mind.
I will not neglect my loved ones, who instill in me confidence and resilience.
I acknowledge the scope of the challenges I will face in an evolving healthcare landscape and in contributing my utmost to the medical and scientific community. I accept responsibility for the example I set for every class to follow and the medical community at large. Above all, I will always remind myself of the passion that first inspired me to enter this profession. May this white coat serve as an everlasting reminder to myself and a symbol to all of my perseverance in upholding this oath.
I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:
I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.
I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.
I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.
I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.
I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty.
Above all, I must not play at God.
I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.
I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.
I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.
If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may
I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

DOCTORAL REGALIA MEANING
At the doctoral level, regalia consists of a more elaborate gown with a five-inch velvet panel down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve. The color of the velvet trim on a doctoral gown indicates the degree and academic discipline of the graduate.
REGALIA COLORS
The color of the velvet trim on the robes indicates the academic discipline in which the wearer has earned their degree. The color for medical programs is kelly green.
ALMA MATER
REGALIA HOODS
The doctoral hood, like the master's hood, features the colors of the graduate's university on the inside and the color of the academic discipline on the outside.
DOCTORAL TAM
The doctoral headgear is traditionally the soft tarn. Some tarns have four corners and look like floppy mortarboards. Others have six corners. The style of tarn is determined by the school from which one graduates.

CORDS AND STOLES FOR GRADUATION REGALIA
You may also see graduates at commencement wearing stoles or cords. These indicate that the wearer is a member of an honor society, or has earned honors in other ways. Veterans or active duty students in the US military, for instance, have their service recognized with a red, white, and blue cord.
In the same way that the regalia robes and hoods are historical descendants of the clothing of medieval monks, cords were used in the Catholic and Anglican churches to distinguish between the varying ranks of the clergy.
