. '■p' Diversity commencement ceremonies are format occasions /I —during which faculty and graduates wear caps and gowns. This is an ancient tradition that dates back to the 12th century when universities were universities were first established in Europe. Before they had their own buildings, universities conducted classes in churches with no heating systems. Historians believe that academic dress originated when scholars wore long gowns and hoods to keep warm in these unheated buildings. Gowns were established as the official dress of academics in 1321, and were worn by both students and professors. These gowns were practical, warm, and became the uniform of academics.
Dr. Andy, as he is affectionately called, is a well-known consultant to universities and hospitality corporations throughout the world. He serves on many boards, including the Tourism Consultative Council of the Singapore Tourism Board and the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s International Panel of Tourism Experts.

We are happy that you have chosen to join us at UNLV Singapore’s first graduation. This is a day that is significant, not only to the graduates, their families and friends, but to the history of our institution. These graduates are to be congratulated not only for their accompiishments academically, but also for their pioneering spirit that will cumulate with their official graduation today. We have every reason to believe that they will carry this pioneering spirit into the workplace and lead the way for the graduates who will follow in their footsteps. Thank you for joining us to celebrate and honor today’s graduates.
Andrew Nazarechuk
Dean, UNLV Singapore Campus
This practice was carried over to the United States, but now caps and gowns are customarily worn only for commencement ceremonies or for special academic occasions. While the robes are most often black, the colours of the hoods will vary depending on the field of study of the graduate. For example, UNLV Master of Hospitality Administration graduates wear a black hood with a blue velvet lining and scarlet and gray underbelly. In addition, they wear a scarlet and gray tassel on their cap.
Graduates of Bachelors programmes do not wear a hood, but the colour of the tassel on their caps indicates their field of study. Our Bachelor of Science in Hotel Administration graduates wear a scarlet and gray tassel, again indicating that their degree is in the field of Hospitality.
The tassels on the caps rest on the left side. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the President of UNLV will instruct the graduates to move their tassels to the right side of their caps. This is the signal that they have, at last, graduated!
The styles of robes and caps vary according to university and according to degree, with Doctoral degree holders having more elaborate hoods. You may see faculty members wearing different styles of caps and gowns, but all of our UN LV graduates today will proudly wear the special academic gowns, caps and tassels that they have worked so hard to earn!
