The William E Hairah
Hotel Administration
Welcome
Welcome to our University campus and thank you for joining us at this celebration! It is with great pleasure that we come together today as an academic community to honor our graduates-to-be. On behalf of all the faculty, I want to take this opportunity to wish our students, continuing success and happiness in their hospitality careers and to thank you, our guests, their friends and family, for your support of their education.
David J. Christianson, Dean
William F. Harrah
College of Hotel Administration
The nation’s swing toward a service society has had a tremendous impact on growth patterns and job opportunities within one of the oldest of all service industries - hotelkeeping. But today’s hoteliers and restaurateurs use talents far different from those of their predecessors, even those of as recently as a decade ago. Change, with all of its problems and challenges, has come with a rush to the hospitality industries.
The William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration was born in this era and has designed, during its maturing years, a dynamic curriculum for the future. The hospitality program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas synthesizes the needs of the student with the changing profession. It does so within a university structure committed to the student’s personal self-fulfillment through intellectual and professional growth. The College’s location provides opportunities for students to work full- or part-time in the hospitality industry, gaining experience to go with their educational degrees.
The College has a Hospitality Research and Development Center, and the UNLV International Gaming Institute whose purpose is to assist industry with special projects and to provide students with opportunities to gain practical experience with management problems.

The Nevada Resort Association
is proud to be a partner in sponsoring this year's Hotel College Diploma Ceremony and reception. The NRA's support of the Hotel College began in 1966 when the organization was instrumental in fostering the notion of a hotel school in the desert. Today, over three thousand alumni are known internationally for their superior hospitality education. We are pleased to have them join us in adding over four hundred new names to the list of alumni from the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration.

Academic Dress
The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. It appears that academic clothing was first introduced and worn at Cambridge and Oxford Universities in the thirteenth century.
The European custom was carried to America with the establishment of our own colleges and universities. In 1895, an academic code of dress was adopted, and the standards were accepted by most of the colleges and universities in the United States. Today, the black robe, hood, and cap are generally worn.
Three different types of black gowns may be distinguished in the academic procession. The bachelor’s gowns have long pointed sleeves; the master’s gowns have oblong sleeves with an arc cut away in the front. The doctor’s gowns are faced with velvet and have bell-shaped sleeves with three bars of velvet.
The Oxford cap, the so-called mortarboard, is black and has a long tassel fastened to the middle of the top that is worn pendant over the left front of the cap. The hood, draped from the shoulder, denotes, by its length and colors, the degree and the institution which conferred the degree.
Summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude are the designations for students graduating with a baccalaureate degree who have earned 60 credits at UNLV and have a grade point average that places them in the top ten percent of students graduating from their class.
Summa cum laude is bestowed on graduating students who are in the top 1 percent of their graduating class.
Magna cum laude is bestowed on graduating students who are in the top 2 percent to 5 percent.
Cum laude is bestowed on graduating students who are in the top 6 percent to 10 percent.
University Honors refers to enrollment in the University Honors program.
Eta Sigma Delta refers to an international hospitality management honor society. The honor society's membership represents the top 20 percentile of the Hotel College student body. Eta Sigma Delta is dedicated to encouraging academic excellence and social responsibility at UNLV and within the community.
