You have been a courageous leader, giving of yourself untiringly, to all who have passed your way. We are extremely proud on this most joyous occasion of the contributions that you have made not only to our lives and the lives of our friends but also to the well being of the community. You have been an inspiration to all of us. The past seven years have been most rewarding for our church and community. May God forever bless you and yours, for many more years to come.

‘JtfvATTIE L. JOHNSON, the daughter di Lylton
and Harriet Watts, ivas born in Canshaw, 8.
C., February 4th, 1891. Departed this life
April 16th, 1936, at 1:30 A. M., in the Mercy Hospital,
Williamson, W. Va. at the age of Forty
five Years, Two Months and Twelve Days.
She was converted in early childhood and placed
her membership with the A. M. E. Church in the
city of her birth. Giving vent to a desire for more
of the necessities of life, she came to Williamson
in 1907 to appease this desire. On her arrival in
Williamson she worked in domestic service for
many years.
Being actuated by a conception to perpetuate
her Religious proclivities, she placed her membership
with the St. James A. M. E. Church this city,
in which she remained a faithful and consistent
Christian until death bade her relinquish her
claim on life.
She was united in Holy Matrimony October 16th,
1918, to Tucker Johnson, to whom she proved
a faithful wife, an ardent housekeeper and a loving
friend.
She leaves to mourn their loss, her husband,
Tucker Johnson, two brothers and one sister: Andrew
Watts of Williamson, Francis Watts, of Winston
Salem, N. C., and Mrs. Natalie Craigget of
Niagara Falls, N. Y., and a host of relatives and
friends.

OBITUARY
“He achieved success because he lived well, laughed often,, and loved much; he gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; he filled his niche and accomplished kis task; he left the world belter than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued' soul; he looked for the best in others and gave the best in himself
JOSEPH CLIFTON JACKSON was born in Terry County, Mississippi October 15, 1879. At an early age he moved with his family to Sherard, Mississippi. Here, for a few years, he was a successful farmer.
He joined the church in 1900 and served as an officer of the church. In 1906 in Greenwood, Mississippi he joined the Conference and that same year was ordained deacon and received his first appointment to Rex, Mississippi. In 1910 he was joined in Holy Wedlock to Miss Ruth R Ross and in December of that same year he was ordained an elder. Rev. Jackson pastured some of the best charges in that state as well as serving ■as Presiding Elder.
In 1924 he was transferred to the West Virginia Conference and assigned to Omar. Here he remained four years. He was then elevated to the position of Presiding Elder in which position he served well for two years. He was assignd to Williamson, West Virginia where he remained until October 22,1935 when he was appointed to Charleston.
Here, again, Rev. Jackson served faithfully and loyally, giving un- stintingly of his time and strength for the upbuilding of the church and the salvation of humanity. He was particularly interested in bringing the children of the community to Christ.
He died Tuesday morning, January 21, 1936 at 6:20. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ruth Ross Jackson; one, brother, Lem McGhee; one sister, Mrs. Ledora Clark of Memphis, Tennessee; one niece, Mrs. Mabel Jordan, of St. Louis, Mo.; and many friends.

Obituary
Mrs.Ida Scales,"born in Germanton,N.Cl departed this life July 14,1843,at 2s05 a.m. in the Memorial Hospital,Williamson,W.Va.
She was converted in her early childhood and placed her membership in the Methodist church of her native city,where she continued active until moving to Williamson, where she made her heme with her loving daughter,Mrs.Oliver Swilling,who preceded decendent in death on April 4,1842.
Since that time Mrs.Scales has been cared for by an attentive son-in-law,Oliver Swilling. No knownJ immediate next of kin survive.
Left to mourn their loss are Mr.Swilling and friends of the deceased.

Mrs.Belle Davis Cook,ths daughter of Les and Anna Borders,was bora in York,South Carolina,July 9,1885. Ini900 she was Joined in Holy Wedlock to Cornelius Davis. Two sons, Cornelius,and Clyde were bora to this union. Following the death of her husband and Cornelius,Jr«,Mrs.Davis moved to WilliaMson.W.Va. in 1918.
Here,she oast her lot with the members of St.Janes a.
M. S.Church,where she has since been a faithful and energetic worker. At ths time of her death she was the beloved President of the Senior Stewardess Board.
On April 4,1921,Mrs.Davis was Joined in Holy Wedlock to Abraham Cook,who proceeded her in death,Oct.19,1928.
Death called Mrs.Cook on Friday evening,April 12,1940 at 8i30. She leaves to mourn their loss,her son,Clyde Davis, one brother,William Borders,of Bay Shore,N.I.,two sisters, Mrs.Estelle Thomas,of Salisbury,N.C. ,Mrs.Lottie Thomas of Cinderella,W. Va.,one grandson,Cl if ton Davis,of Momasville,
N. C.,Many relatives,friends and the entire membership of St. Janes A.M.E.Church.
Her life was an inspiration;her memory a benediction. She looked for the best in others,and. gave the best of herself.
Nathaniel Herbert Norris,the son of Amelia and. Charles H.Morris.was bom in Salt Creek,Virginia June 14,1382. He departed . s life Sept. 14,1936 at 3:4b a.m. in the William son Memorial hospital at the age of 43 years,
3 months ana 10 days.
Moving to Williamson, V«Va. in 1914 Mr Morris placed his membership with St.James A M.B. church where he has si,^ active and for many years a

Obituary
Samel Ervin Hairston,beloved son of Sam and Nancy Hairston,was born in Walnut Cove,N.C. January 27,1901. His wife,Mattie Hairston preceded him in death,in April 1942. To this union was born one son^,Samuel Ervin,Jr*, now serving with the United States Armed Forces somewhere in England.
After the death of his wife,Mr.Hairston made his home in Bluefield,1 .Va. where he was a member of the Mt.?ion Baptist church. Later,moving to Williamson,he was emplojaed as an Orderly at the Memorial hospital until a few months before his illness which required his removal to Oenmar Sanitarium where he died Saturday,April 16,1944'at 3»08 p.m
In addition to his son,other loved ones left to mourn his passing are four sisters,Mrs.Birdie Ford and Mrs.Rhode Chandler of Toledo,Ohio,Mrs.Nannie Spriggs,Washington,D.C., and Mrs.Caroline Warren,this city;one brother,Haywood Haire ton,stationed with the U.S.Armed Forces somewhere in North Africa,numerous nieces and nephews and a host of ^j^ds.

Michael Hoggard, a straight
A student and a fullback on
the soccer team, died at the
scene of the 1:45 p.m. accident
when he lost control of his
northbound dark blue Mustang
and slammed into a southbound
Rebel Oil Co. tanker on
i Mountain Vista Street, Metro
Police Sgt. Steve Tuggle said.
Police said Hoggard, whose
seat belt had to be cut away,
died on impact, his car crushed
beneath the tanker’s front
wheels and his body trapped
in the wreckage.
The youth had just left school
and was weaving in and out of
traffic above the 45 mph speed
limit when the Mustang crested
the hill at Patrick Lane and flew
over the median sideways into
the truck, Tuggle said.
Police closed the road for
about two blocks and called
a county hazardous materials
unit to clean up oil spilled from
the car.
The truck driver, who would
not provide his name as he
stood near the wreck with a
stricken look on his face, was
not injured, authorities said.
Hoggard was a popular youth
who was called “a pleasure to
be around” by his soccer coach,
Vince Hart.
“He would do anything,
could play any position. He was
an all-American kid for sure,”
said Hart, who said he learned
of the accident from another
athlete’s parent while on the
school’s practice field.
Several of the youth’s
friends, who came upon the
accident just seconds after it
occurred, huddled together at
i the scene, hugging and crying.
