    Dear Eve:
Thank you for your kind letter and for your gracious
invitation to meet for lunch. However, at the moment
my schedule is so "overloaded" that I am going to
have to wait for a breathing spell.
In the meantime I have enclosed a brochure of the
    American Women for International Understanding
which tells a little bit about the organization
which you asked about in your note.
It was a pleasure to meet you and I hope that our
paths cross in the future, but until that time I
send you my very kindest regards and best wishes..

    American Women
    for International Understanding
American Women for International Understanding was established to create an international community of women to
foster understanding and goodwill among nations.
With the aim of exploring twentieth century woman's role and concerns, AWIU members seek to acquire
rnowledge ttvough study, travel and symposia which create an international bridge of understanding Fundamental
to AWIU is the principle of individual outreach through non-political, non-governmental voluntary action.
The direct exchange of experiences and goals with women of other countries began in 1968, when a delegation of
American women leaders visited the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and met with members of the Soviet
Women's Committee. AWIU delegates have since visited countries around the world including Afghanistan,
Arqentina Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Iran
Israel Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Peru, Romania, Thailand, Turkey and Yugoslavia. AWIU is
one of the few women's organizations to be received in the People's Republic of China. ^e'nJ°r^"9 h®®e
exchanges, reciprocal delegations of women leaders from many countries have been hosted by AWIU members
    within the United States.
AWIU is a non-qovernmental organization and each member of a delegation is self-financed. However, AWIU is
orivileqed to have the cooperation of the United States Department of State which provides invaluable briefings prior
to overseas tours Both U.S. Embassies and Consulates and those of the countries to be visited provide meaningfu
assistance to AWIU delegations. The membership of AWIU comprises a geographical cross-section of American
women leaders. They represent a variety of professions and vocations, including agricultural enterprises, arts.
business, education, journalism, jurisprudence, library science, medicine, social welfare and an impressive span of
    volunteer community services.
AWIU members disseminate the knowledge gained through the person-to-person interaction with their foreign
counterparts to American women. Symposia, which are open to both members and the P/Jbl'c. foNow each trip w
duplicate sessions in various parts of the U.S. At AWIU's annual meeting, a portion of which is open to the pub c a
woman is honored whose work and ideals closely embody those of AWIU. The first award was presented to Shirley
Temple Black, former U.S. Ambassador to Ghana and former U.S. Chief of Protocol.
AWIU strengthens the international community of women through:
    • Bringing women leaders of the United States together to share knowledge gained through travel exchanges, thus
encouraging women-to-women contact throughout the world.
. Researching international problems such as ecology, demography, health services, child care and welfare.
    • Encouraging educational experiences for American women, foreign women and students through the AWIU
    scholarship program.
    • Serving as a clearinghouse through which various international groups may exchange information and obtain data
    within the sphere of AWIU.

    Dear I.TalLam:-
llr. Harris turned the letter you
sent him over to our office, asking that we
write you, explaining fully regarding your taxes.
The 1926 general tax on the South 10 ft.
of Lot 5 and Ilorth 6 ft. of Lot 6 Block 2 Steelworks,
amounting to '47.09, was paid Sept. 27,
1927, but the Bay State Paving was hot paid. Therefore
the property went to sale for the 1927 paving.
The Holder of the Certificate of Purchase (the
person who paid this paving tax) paid the 1927 general
tax and 1928 Sewer tax, which is his privilege.
These amounts were endorse! on his certificate, so
in order to redeem the paving, you must pay the full
amount that he has paid out, which is 74.64, the
amount we gave you on the statement we sent. This
sum includes the total paving assessment, as the
delinquent paving tax goes to sale for the full
amount. You understand 74.64 includes the 1927
general and 1928 sewer tax, so if you will send us
a check for this amount, your taxes will he paid to
date, including the full amount of the paving.
If you wish to pay the Storm Sewer assessment
in full after you have paid the sum of 74.64,
the amou.t will he ,10.65 for the balance of the
year. After the first of the year some interest
    will be aided on.
Trusting :e have sent you the desired
    information, we remain,
    Yours truly,
    71 L.J D. GSI3AED, CO. TEE AS.
