    Dearest Mary.
    line
    5
    Once I was
    line
    6
away from home and I loved
    line
    7
every letter I got; they strengthen
    line
    8
    the bonds of friendship; they
    line
    9
    brightened the cloudy moments;
    line
    10
they made me sad and happy.
    line
    11
Sad because I longed to be
    line
    12
at my dear old home, and
    line
    13
    happy because I was missed.

If I were ever neglected, oh, how
    line
    1
badly I did feel, and if ever I
    line
    2
received a letter from some unexpe-
    line
    3
cted quarter I was very happy indee^
    line
    4
    to think that someone thought
    line
    5
of me. May I ask the question
    line
    6
will you be pleased to receive
    line
    7
one from me? But, dear Mary,
    line
    8
I am only judging others by my
    line
    9
self when I take the privilege of writing them a letter, (unasked for) .
Do you like your school, but I am sure you cannot help liking it. I attended the Summer school in Beaver, and had a lovely time, indeed. I think Bro. Brimhall one of the nicest men I have ever met.
I have spent three winters of my short life away from home and the only recompense is being away farther than ever the coming one,. It nearly breaks my heart to think of it and I know you will sympathize with me.(?) But I guess it is our lot to baffle with disappointments and misfortunes while we live upon earth, and should do so without complaining and it is only by meeting and facing every thing that seems hard to us that we learn to establish individual character. I sometimes feel ashamed of myself for being so ungrateful

When I heard you were intending

to go to Provo I was pleased

and hoped I myself might go but
    line 3
alas! Fond hopes to bright hopes

far tc grand to be realized!

But I live, hoping to be a

    line 8
high though as they have met
    line 9
    with disapointment too many
    line 10
times. I have seen George several
    line 11
times and he seems to feel real
    line 12
well, he says better than he
    line 13
does at Panacea. He is making
    line 14
    rapid progress with the house.
