Barbara Cloud Personal Papers (MS-01085)

Abstract

The Barbara Cloud Personal Papers date from approximately 1880 to 2004 and consist of Cloud's personal research into her family history, as well as her early work as a graduate student at the University of Washington. The collection contains Cloud's thesis manuscript, published doctoral dissertation, and an award given to Cloud by Washington State Historical Society. Materials also include reproductions of family photographs, research files, copies of J. A. Slover's autobiography later published by Cloud and her mother, and Slover's original handwritten autobiography from 1907.

Scope and Contents Note

The Barbara Cloud Personal Papers date from approximately 1880 to 2004 and consist of Cloud's personal research into her family history, as well as her early work as a graduate student at the University of Washington. The collection contains Cloud's thesis manuscript, published doctoral dissertation, and an award given to Cloud by Washington State Historical Society for her scholarship contributions. The majority of the collection is research about Cloud's family history, particularly into the history of J. A. (James Anderson) Slover, Cloud's maternal great-great-grandfather. Materials include reproductions of family photographs, research files, copies of Slover's autobiography later published by Cloud and her mother, and J. A. Slover's original handwritten autobiography from 1907.

Biographical / Historical Note

Barbara Cloud was born in Tulare, California but attended grade school and high school in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Cloud completed various degrees in journalism. She received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University, master's degree from the University of Oregon, and doctoral degree from the University of Washington. In 1978, Cloud applied for a journalism position at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She was hired and she and her husband, Stan, moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1979.

While at UNLV, she built up the journalism program and in 1983 became department chair, a position she was elected to for the next six years. She was the editor of Journalism History and published multiple books. Before retiring from UNLV in 2005, Cloud served as the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs from 1998 to 2003, was the president of the UNLV Phi Kappa Phi honorary society, and established the UNLV chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha. Cloud was given the honor of professor emeritus when she retired from UNLV in 2005. She passed away suddenly at the age of 71 on December 24, 2009.
