Leslie H. Smith Papers (MS-01057)

Abstract

The Leslie H. Smith Papers (approximately 1920-2018) contains the personal papers of Leslie H. Smith, who grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, and mainly documents his involvement with the Las Vegas High School Alumni Association organizing and attending the school's annual reunions. The collection includes personal papers, scrapbooks, and photographs documenting Smith's family, including his father Dr. J. D. Smith, his mother Ruth Weir Smith, and his sister Jeanne Smith Stewart. Reproductions of class photographs from the Las Vegas Grammar School (now known as the Historic Fifth Street School) where Smith attended elementary school are also included this collection.

Scope and Contents Note

The Leslie H. Smith Papers (approximately 1920-2018) contains the personal papers of Leslie H. Smith, who grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection documents Smith's involvement with the Las Vegas High School Alumni Association to organize the school's annual reunions and includes several class reunion photographs and programs. Personal papers, scrapbooks, and photographs document other members of Smith's family, including his father Dr. J. D. Smith, his mother Ruth Weir Smith, and his sister Jeanne Smith Stewart. Blueprints and specifications of the Smith family home located on 624 S. 6th Street, a Spanish colonial revival style home listed the National Register of Historic Places, are in this collection. Reproductions of class photographs from the Las Vegas Grammar School (now known as the Historic Fifth Street School) from the 1930s where Smith attended elementary school are also included this collection. This collection also includes a digitized versions of Las Vegas High School's class of 1945 class photographs as well digitized versions of Las Vegas Grammar School class group photographs from 1936 to 1959.

Biographical / Historical Note

Leslie Hamilton Smith was born on October 10, 1927 to Dr. Jay Dayton "J. D." Smith and Ruth Weir Smith in Las Vegas, Nevada. Smith's father owned a dental practice in an office located at 1st and Fremont Streets and was involved with various community activities throughout Las Vegas. Smith attended Las Vegas Grammar School (later named the Historic Fifth Street School) and graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1945. He graduated from the University of Nevada and worked as a real estate broker and contractor in Las Vegas. As of 2021, Smith lives in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 2021, Tammi Kim minimally processed the materials during accessioning and created the finding aid in ArchivesSpace. Files were transferred off of optical discs and access copies were created.
