WATER CONSUMPTION Water consumption based on the amount used by Las Vegas Valley Water District customers was nearly 15% higher in 1956 than in 1955. Total dollar billings jumped 12.5%, and the number of customer accounts increased by 14%. Consumption reached an all-time high of 6,600,000,000 gallons, amounting to 856,000,000 gallons more than in the preceding 12 months. Sales at $1,467,547 were up $161,928, and customer accounts totalling 10,654 at the end of 1956 showed a gain of 1,270 for the year. Comparative consumption, billing and customer account figures for 1955 and 1956 are given in the following table: 14-YEAR RECORD OF YEARLY WATER SALES AND CONSUMPTION Detailed consumption and sales figures covering the 14-year period from 1943 through 1956 for the Las Vegas Valley Water District System (which was operated by Las Vegas Land and Water Company prior to July, 1954) are given in the following table. For purposes of comparison the actual dollar billings, as shown in Column #1, have been adjusted as set forth in Column #2 to give effect to various rate increases. Dollar sales figures shown in Column #2 reflect the rate schedule in effect during 1956. * Rate increases: 140%Sept. 1,1954; 20%Stpt. 1,1952; 10% Sept. 1,1951 82% INCREASE !N 5 YEARS The 1956 total consumption figure of 6,606,000,000 gallons for the Water District compared with 3,618,000,000 gallons in 1951, representing a 5-vear increase of 82%. Daily per capita consumption in 1956 averaged 383 gallons over the entire year, but reached a peak of 664 gallons on the maximum day of consumption during the summer season. Las Vegas Valley Water District is a publicly owned corporation, organized in 1948 under the provisions of a State enabling Act adopted by the 1947 Legislature. In 1954 the District acquired the domestic water distributing system and well field formerly owned and operated by the Las Vegas Land and Water Company, wholly owned subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad Company, and has since installed a pipeline which provides a supplemental supply of Lake Mead water. Main supply is from artesian wells yielding 20-million gallons daily. Funds for acquisition and extension of facilities were obtained from the sale of $8,700,000 of waterworks bonds. The District covers an area of 306 square miles and is presently serving a population of around 50,000. overall 1956 Water Use in the Las Vegas-Henderson-Boulder region (including Las Vegas Valley Water District consumption) aggregated some 20-billion gallons, of which approximately 64% came from underground sources and the 36% balance from Lake Mead. Total underground withdrawal exceeded 14-billion gallons, according to estimates by the State Engineer's office, and approximately 8-billion gallons were pumped from Lake Mead. Colorado River Commission records showed around 7.1-billion gallons of lake water pumped through the BMI pipeline, and Boulder City officials reported taking about 900-million gallons to supply that area.
