f i r ' ' % ? Salt Lake City to G arfield, It is required to collect the freigh t charges at the point of destination, and. has done so, The American Smelting 4s Befining Co. now present their b i l l s , according to the attached statement, with demand, for a repayment to them o f the amount of money received by the Eailroad Company upon short coal. I am advised that this sum also includes the price paid for the coal at the mine, and th eir claim covers this sum. To pay this w ill cost our Company something like two or three times as much money as it s earnings. I am advised that Mr.Krutsehnitt, Mr.Stubbs and Mr.Munroe are a ll thoroughly fam iliar with the subject matter, and the same has been under discussion by them fo r some considerable time, and that about a year ago the Wyoming coal fie ld s were assigned to the ju risd ictio n of the Denver Branch of the Weighing Association, but that this Branch has paid p racti-c a lly no attention t© the re al situation, I a© not know how correct this information is , but it comes to me and I give it to you as I got i t , I understand further that on November 1st, a change has been ordered -» j: / to be taade ijuukha by transferring the weighing supervision to the Salt Lake Branch of the weighing Association in charge o f M r.C.H ,G riffin, the •Joint Agent, and that this change is ordered because of the fa ilu re to eure the e v ils heretofore existing, 1 know this is a subject f u ll of soreness and of g rie f, but the claims we are now pres anted with, i f pressed, by the A.S.& B.Co., w ill make the subject © t ill worse, and I would lik e to have your views as t© the law ful right* of the Railroad Companies to assess and co llec t, under their t a r i f f s , freigh t revenue on weights so charged in excess of the re a l weight of the a rtic le carried, as appears from this statement, I assume that testimony as to tne amount of destination weights w ill be presented to fu lly support the claim made by the Smelting Company, and
