Hr. Earley A* Harmon, Chairman, Public ^grvie e Commissi on. Carsob City, Eevada. M dear Harley; As, yom .may Hare noticed from the las Vegas paper, the City of las Veges ig feeing a rather serious situation with regard to its water supply, and this condition has existed for the past six weeks. At the present time, we are Jest holding ©or own and m i s is due to two things? first, the cooperation we are receiving from the people'here in response to ©nr frank statement of aonditi ors which we published in the newspaper, and second, because of the cool weather which we hare been enjoying for the past few weeks. However, we hay© at least sixty days of hot weather before us and it is reasonable to assume that the water consumption will increase during that time. At the present time an average of 3 #VV8,0OO gallons of water per day is being consumed by the city, or 4?I gallons per person per day, based on a population of 3,000. fhere is no question that a large percentage of this water is act being put to beneficial use, but is being used to sprinkle the roof of buildings, run thru old-fashioned cooling systems and thence into the sewer, or passing through hoses and out into the street where it runs down the gutter. Water is sold here on a flat-rate basis, as we are not permitted to'use meters under the law, azd there seemed to be no way to prohibit the useless waste of this ©ssentihl commodity except by means of a city ordinance, Hast year, when we were confronted with a water shortage, we promptly took the matter up with the iJayor and Gity Commissi oners and in due course an ordinance m s passed, prohibiting useless waste of water and with this assistance from the city officials we were able to get through the summer without any hardship to the citizens of the community.
