{future of Vegas Alley's Water 1 3 Supply Studied | | The future of Las Vegas val • ley’s water supply may be de eided within the next few day! in conferences between t h < 1 board of directors of the newlj formed water district and th( Las Vegas city commission. Members of the city board al -j 1 ready have indicated a definitf [; interest in purchasing the La Vegas Land and Water compan; . and operating it as a municipa S concern. Members of the water distric [ .-board, who have been studyin • the situation for several months.,... are convinced that, without the local utility as a foundation, the j , plans for bringing Lake Mead water into the valley for agricultural and domestic purposes j and to serve the air force base, | are impractical. First conference between the j two boards is being held this ‘j afternoon to determine, according to a member of the water - board, “justhow.serious the city actually is with regard to the’ purchase.” Main objection to the water; district program, it appears, isf the oppositon of many residents] to the. idea of blending Lake] Mead water with the artesian] supply- This objection, apparently, is based on the idea that the lake water must be chemically] treated thereby attaining an un-i pleasant taste. However, experiments in Hen-j derson have resulted in discon-jj tinuing all treatment of the S' water except for standard chlori- j nation similar to that in vogue | j (Continued On Page 2) 1 > LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL Las Vegas, Nevada, Sept* 23, 1949 | | ---------- o---------- >5 Future of Nevada j (Continued From Page 1) in most cities in the United States. Today’s discussions will neces-1 sarily be of a preliminary nature, it was indicated, but should definitely determine the position.; of the city with regard to pur-7 chase of the local utility. If the city should take over the water company, its service would be confined to the city limits, it was pointed out, and a check of the city’s financial status indicates it would be impossible for many years to finance construction of a pipe-line from Lake Mead to augment the present artesian supply which has proved inadequate during ihe summer months for some time past. A check of the air force base reveals that the water supply there is sufficient only to meet minimum requirements. Authorities there said this morning that they were counting on Lake Mead Water to provide the additional supply necessary to carry out development and beautification plans already authorized.
