under a municipal franchise. The water producing system, however, is owned by the Union Pacific Railroad Company, which company in turn sells water to the Las Vegas Land and Water Company. Water for the city, at the present time, is derived from eleven wells and three springs owned by the Union Pacific Railroad Company. These wells range in depth from 472 feet to 1250 feet. With the exception of three wells, which are pumped, all wells and springs flow under artesian head through three settling basins, with a rated capacity of 16 MGD, to two reservoirs, from which water may either be pumped or flow by gravity to the distribution system of the city. The reservoirs, designated as Clark Street and Charleston, are of concrete construction with timber roofs and have capacities of 2.5 million gallons and 1.2 million gallons, respectively.
