V Las Vegas - October 10, 1944 W 23-1-23 Personal Mr. Frank Strong: Referring ray letter September 23 regarding local agitation for acquisition of the Basic Magnesium Inc. pipe line by the city or county. At the Bank Saturday we were advised that this subject is still being discussed and the Chamber of Commerce has requested the Nevada Congressional Delegation to keep the system intact until the city and eounty can make aose plan to acquire the system if it is salvaged. It is alleged that the Water Company has protested the drilling of any more wella in the Las Vegas Valley, with the intention of preventing further development of the city by preventing hotels on the outskirts from drilling any additional wells. This is of course ridiculous as our protest was filed merely for the purpose of protecting the wells which now supply the city. However it is difficult to combat rumors and this is one of the things I would like to talk to you about when you and Mr. Bennett have an opportunity to come out. No doubt the hearing on our protest would clarify the situation and would also serve the intention of calling to the State Engineer*s attention the necessity for conserving water in the underground channels and not granting apolioations promiscuously. I an advised by State Engineer*a office that the hearing will be set for some time in November. Please let me know when you will be out. cc: Mr. E. S. Bennett Mr. L. A.
