Las Vegas, Nev., Dec* 29, 1916. Mr. H.C. Butt, Pres., L.V.L.&.W. Co.. Los Angeles, Cal. Dear S ir: On Saturday, the 23rd, when I was in Los Angeles, w® had another robbery of room here at the Company Rooming House and while this is but the second occurence of this kind, I want to take immediate steps to prevent anything of a lik e nature in the future. I f you approve, I would lik e to order su fficien t Corb in night latehe<|, f i f t y in number, one fo r each room. These 'latches with three keys cost us $1.49 each and I believe that i f we put these night latches on each room and maintain a key fund, charging each occupant a 50^ deposit fo r a key and allowing no one a key to his room but the chambermaid and himself, we can prevent any trouble in the future. The key deposit can be returned to him upon return of his key when he vacates room. Referring to the robbery which did occur, it was the room occupied by J.A. Barnard, who is cashier at the freight house, and his room was entered about four oclock in the a fte rnoon by a machinist helper by the name of Dempsey who occupied another room in the Rooming House but after stealing Barnard’ s stu ff, le ft that evening on the train . He simply lift e d everything that BSrnard had in his room and le f t him absolutely without cLothing, hats or shoes and I would lik e to recommend that we make some effdrt to reimburse him fo r his loss as is a very worthy employee and one of the best roomies we have in the house. I have asked him to give me an itemized b i l l of his loss which I herewith enclose. I f you think we should a llow him something, I wish you would kindly advise me and I w ill draw up a voucher in his favor. Yours very truly, In cl. Agent.
