    16. the well passes through coarse sands and gravels and if bailing seems to have little effect upon the water level, the well can be expected to leak considerably if it is not prbperly cased. In the Honolulu artesian basin part of the over- lying formation consists of porous coral into which artesian water easily escaped after holes in the casing had been formed by corrosion. J J McCombs. In contrast to these examples, the overlying material at Las Yagas, especially in the lower part of the valley, consists largely of fine material, and the shallow sands probably are not continuous, being very irregular and lenticular, and do not provide the outlets for large quan­tities of underground leakage from the artesian wells.
