m Las Vegas Evening Review-Journal Las Vegas, Nevada. Aug. 5, 1943 Aug. 6, 1943 i ¥ r s s e W M ;e if m I f; 1 Is Given to City Recommendations for mate- [ rials for extending the water and power system in Westside to al-|| deviate the sanitary conditions! and fire hazards were promised) yesterday to the Las Vegas city} board by two officials of the' national housing authority from; San Francisco. W. W. Collins, assistant regional representative of the NHA, and W. Conrad McKelvey, senior housing representative of the NHA, advised the city officials to contact the war pro-: duction board for necessary ma-! terials and they would recommend the granting of the sup- f' plies on the basis of their inves- tigation of the living conditions i of negroes in Westside. The city officials sought ap- j proval of a special housing proj- ' ect in Westside for negroes, but this was turned down by the NHA officials for the present, be- i cause of the building program at f Basic to house negro plant work- j ers and their families. They agreed on a further review of the | matter, however, after October, ' after the Basic housing construct | tion is completed and it is de- 1 termined whether those quarters i are fully Occupied. It was pointed out that the ‘ new sewer was installed in the I Westside as well as in other parts of Las Vegas, but it is j Useless. in Westside without a 1 water supply. A census of the Westside. col-. i ored area to determine how ? many - present f residents . own’ f their own property and are de- J sirous of building homes there f for permanent occupancy, will ] be launched next week by City ! Commissioner Walter B. Bates; i it was announced today. 8 . Bates said the city would press 4 for installation of . /water and J Power for that area following the j pledge ? of FPHA . officials that they would approve the issuance of priorities for this purpose, and ? he hopes for early action on these | projects.
