•••Repairs to Water Line at Las Vegas**., i Los AngelQ s, Jan* El 11920 File 613 MR. J* ROSS CLARK: I have your letter of January goth, file 59-PP, to Which was attached letter from Mr, Bracken regarding pipe line at Las Vegas: The &600* of wood pipe which has Been ordered is indented for replacing a like amount of vitrified pipe running westward from the west end of the concrete to encased vitrified pipe* This amount will extend/wi thin about 500* of the Sprirg hvereitiich part it is intended to allow the plain vitrified pipe to remain, there being; practically no pressure on that part of the line* As to the advisability of replacing the concrete encased portion, as you know the tile pipe was sold under guarantee to withstand an internal working pressure of 30 lbs per sq, in. but it has failed to withstand pressure very much less than that, heme we can no longer apply theory to determine the strength of this line* That being the case it is now merely a guess, and one man*s guess is as good as anothers. However, I would point out the line has now been in service nearly two years and has passed through two winters without failure. As the line is composed of metals not affected by time or chemicals there is no reason to believe it will not continue to serve the purpose indefinitely. To replace this portion with a^(bod pipe will have no affect upon the pressure* While there are a few leaks in the line they are insignificant and in no way affect the pressure* There is about 2000* of the concrete encased pipe which if replaced with redwood will cost about #5000* The portion of the wood line between the Company water tank and the City Water Y/orks, about 1100*, which was installed several years ago will have to be replaced within a very short time, and as it passes under all of the yard think, when it is replaced, it should be with cast iron*
