1 H.F.C. 1-8-52 LAS VEGAS LAND AND WATER COMPANY, PHYSICAL CONDITION OF CAST IRON PIPE MAINS Since H.F.C. arrived in Las Vegas, the water utility has laid several long stretches of new cast iron mains* In the summer of 1950, new main was laid in the alley parallel with North Main Street, and in the alley parallel with Fremont Ave. These two lines came together in the alley intersection of the block in which Hotel Sal Sagev is located. All excavation was dry* In the alley south of Fremont, several sections of old and discarded wood state pipe were encountered in the trench. All wood state went out about ten years ago. In December, 1951* the utility laid some 8-inch and 12-inch on the east side of Bonanza Road, cutting into an existing 12-inch cast iron main at Clarkway Drive. Inspection of this work, under contract to Nevada Construction Company, showed a 3-foot dirt cover over top of the new main. The soil and dry and sandy, but stood up after being cut by an excavating digger until the pipe could be laid. All joints on cast iron pipe are caulked with dampened cement-although some TEGAL joints will be found on the 24-inch line down Charleston Boulevard from the reservoir at the West . Excavation, as said, by trench excavator. Backfill by bull dozer, in layers, with tamping tractor following after ditch is backfilled. Fire hydrants were inserted at intervals of about 500 feet* The fire hydrants are MUELLER type, with 6-inch bell. Hydrants are located just inside the future curb line on Bonanza Road ( non-existent as yet) Force required for layings Traveler crane on tractor which had the tamper attachment. Operator for the tractor. Foreman and two men . Foreman worked.
