Page 2 WHEEL OF ROTARY FEBRUARY 23, 1950 PHOENIX COMES TODAY The Rotary Club of Phoenix, Arizona, is sending a large delegation to Las Vegas today to carry out a program. They are traveling by Bonanza Air Lines and expect to arrive shortly before one o'clock, so President Leonard has ar-ranged to begin our meeting today at 1:00 p.m., instead of 12:15 as usual. According to advance information, there will be 24 Rotarians from Phoenix; 12 or 15, perhaps more, from Kingman, and a large group from Boulder City. Arrangements have been made by the Bureau of Reclamation to take the vis-iting Rotarians on a boat trip on Lake Mead this afternoon. The Kingman group have announced their intention of re-turning home this evening but the Phoenix Rotarians will remain until to-morrow. * * * * * * * * * * * * NEW CLASSIFICATIONS The Board of Directors have receiv-ed proposals to fill the following clas s ifi cat i ons: "Western Sports Wear" "Highway Construction" * * * * * * * * * * * * DOCLADD That uproarious Tail Twister Doc Ladd sits in with your " Hheel" Committee every Wednesday noon at Club Bingo. Doc informs us that there is a government agency now operating in Las Vegas for eradicating your gophers (Republican gophers, of course). * * * * * * * * * * * * THE YOUNG- HAN OF THE YEAR AWARD was won by "Scoop" Garside from the Jr. Chamber of Commerce. LAST WEEK The program last week was de-voted to Boy Scouts of America. The first of the formalities was the presentation by President Leonard of awards to all the Scout Masters of the Boulder Dam Council area who were present as guests of the Club The principal speaker of the day was Rex Bell who for the past two years has done fine service as President of the Boulder Dam Council Rex spoke earn-estly of the great need for the services of more part time adult volunteers. The rapid growth of the Boy Scout organization in this area has created a need for more adult scout workers and leaders, the speaker said. He emphasized the fact that those in Boy Scout work are dealing with the country's greatest asset—Boys. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * EXPRESSING SYMPATHY We express to Dr. Bob Gatewood the sympathy of all members of this Club because of the death of his mother whose funeral occurred yesterday at McCook, Nebraska. Death came after a lingering ill-ness and for several months has seemed inevitable. Because of the heavy snows and disruption of all forms of transportation, Dr. Gate-wood was unable to attend the fun-eral. ANCIENT HISTORY The Editor, looking through some old papers recently, came across an envelope in which were card notices of the proposal for membership in Las 7egas Rotary Club of ten persons. Among them were: A. C. Grant, auto garage F.L. O'Donnell, milk-retailing Of the other eight, several, now deceased, were members of the Club for several years. The cards were ; all signed "Fig", meaning "Fig" New- j ton, who for some years was secretary of this Club and now occupies the same position in the Rotary Club of 'R City. The date? Fcbt4;<M33. Our Scotch President Len says the cigars will be on him for the first 100% meeting of this Rotary Club dur-ing his administration. i t : * * * * * * * * * * * * * BIRTHDAY OF ROTARY Today is the 45th anniversary of the first meeting of Rotary in Chicago February 23, 1905. In the eventful 45 years of the life of Rotary, there have been strange changes in the ways of man-kind and two of the most destructive wars in all history have been fought-- with no winner. In the meantime, that great force put to work through the machinery created by Rotary lias had a profound effect on civilization and is now recognized by many nations as a foun-dation on which we may build our greatest hopes for the future of hu-manity. The great movement known through-out the world as Rotary now numbers 6,930 Clubs with 332,000—all working in harmony to promote the Peace of the World.
