Coal Retirements and Clean Energy • Next year will be a pivotal year as we place the Coal Era in America’s rear-view mirror. We plan to retire dozens more coal plants and get closer to our 2015 goal of retiring one-third of America’s electrical coal production. • The Sierra Club is also working for clean energy, pushing for local, state, and federal measures to make 2014 the biggest year yet for wind, solar, and energy efficiency. Green Fleets Versus Tar Sands • We continue our Green Fleets Campaign, urging companies to end the use of tar sands oil, reduce oil consumption 25% or more, and end America’s dependence on oil. We hope to increase demand for electric vehicles and hybrids, get Americans out of their cars and into alternative forms of transport, and generate corporate support for green transportation. Dirty Fossil Fuels on Public Lands • We will stand firmly against the development of dirty and dangerous fossil fuels on our public lands and offshore areas, particularly the reckless leasing of public lands for drilling and mining next to or nearby national parks and national monuments in places like Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado and Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona. Fracking Reform and LNG Regulation • The Sierra Club will continue to build a national movement to eradicate natural gas use by 2050 by enacting regulations that end destructive drilling, curbing natural gas expansion in the electricity sector, and preventing the exportation of American liquefied natural gas. • To clean up natural gas production, we will promote tough federal and state safeguards, ensure that gas development is not allowed in areas that are environmentally inappropriate and actively force gas burning plants to internalize their true costs to make clean energy more competitive. National Monuments¥nd Designations • In 2014, we hope to secure one million acres of new National Monuments, encourage leaders to provide local support after designation to increase resiliency for wildlife and wildlands, and provide recreational opportunities for generations to enjoy. International Impact • The Sierra Club plans to support international activists in India, China, and Australia who are working to move the world beyond coal. We are also working to ensure that proper rules are put in place at the United Nations Green Climate Fund which is the main international conduit for financing climate action in the developing world. Sharing Our Outdoor Legacy • Our Mission Outdoors program has formed unique partnerships with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and Blue Star Families, maintained historic partnerships with the National Military Family Association, and continued to chair the Outdoor Alliance for Kids to expand our work with military families, veterans, and America’s next generation of leaders. Thank you again for your dedication and support as a member of the Sierra Club. 85 Second Street, Second Floor • San Francisco, CA 94105 • 415-977-5500
