Where the houses of the Paloma subdivision just south of Grand Teton Drive stand was once the site of an artesian spring mound that produced a geyser spraying 2,000 gallons per minute high into the air, plenty for the family farm. For years, the brothers spumed developers by setting a minimum selling price for their land at $1 million per acre, an utterly ludicrous price when interest in their property heated up in the early 1990s. With just about every inch of land in the area snapped up, that price is not far above the going rate. The acquisitions made up for some not-so-profitable investments and financed the hobbies they took on when they phased into retirement in the 70s. Bill Gilcrease began collecting birds: peacocks, ostriches, emus, lots of tropical species, and plenty of migrating water fowl that simply pass through. Many were cast-off exotic pets that the local animal shelter was ill-equipped to care for or adopt. Others were pets of his own. Over time, the menagerie grew to include other types of animals and long ago reached a point where it required professional management and a host of volunteers. Years ago, Gilcrease received nonprofit status for the animal sanctuary as an e4]Ucational resource. Most of its visitors are bus loads of schoolchildren on field trips. The $1 fee changed to school-age visitors hardly begins to cover expenses. Ted Gilcrease had little interest in birds, but developed a pick-your-own orchard that he hoped would continue in perpetuity. The public can drive through the orchards year-round, gathering pumpkins, peppers, okra, apples, peaches — whatever is in season. The orchard, while gaining customers over the years, is also a nonprofit money-loser. “I guess we were never very good businessmen. Everything we try ends up costing us money,” Gilcrease said. With tons of uneaten apples each year rotting in air-conditioned warehouses, the brothers decided Ip try mak-uns se6aA sen pue jeujnof-MaiAaH se6aA sen rvyictnu Jiuiiic.
