Sigesmund Gerald Welt The meeting was called to order by President Dr. Marvin A. Perer at 8:11 p.m., at which time he welcomed everyone and called on Dr. Steve Kollins to read the D'Var Torah. Marv then gave the President's report, which included information on the new finance committee he appointed, the up-coming audit and the management audit. The General Campaign report was given by Dr. Perer. The new goal for Campagin '91 will be $1.3 million. Sandy Mallin reported that Women's Division has 27 new gifts and $80,000 in pledges to date for 1991. Sandy Mallin reported that the committee is working on the next Major Gifts event and that the minimum contribution will once again be $1,800 per person and $3,600 per couple to attend this event. Ron Kirsh reported on Super Sunday, to be held on February 3, 1991 at the Holiday Casino/Holiday Inn. He discussed youth having their own phone room and the very young being runners, etc. He asked for Phone Sponsors at a cost of $100 per ins?trument; several people signed up. David Mendelson, one of the Co-Chairs for Super Sunday then thanked the Board for all their past support to him personally, and said now it is his turn to do what he can for the Federation in return. 1030 East Twain Avenue las Vegas, Nevada 89109 (702) 732-0556JFLV BOARD MTG. 12/5/90 Page 2 Sherry Sigesmund reported on the recent Ingathering Mission to the Soviet Union and Israel. She was part of the group taking the first direct El A1 flight from Moscow to Tel Aviv. Dorothy Eisenberg said how very meaningful it was to have 250 people from all over the United States participating. 20,000 Soviet Jews went to Israel during the month of November. Dr. Steve Kollins mentioned the economic chaos in the Soviet Union. He further discussed how difficult the situation is and the lack of necessities, such as food. There is now a legitimate concern for freedom for all minorities. Israel has no quota for incoming Soviet Jews. Absorption is a tre?mendous problem for the country to deal with. Mike Novick reported on the Morasha Mission for Young Leader?ship. The group went to Poland and then Israel; meeting up with the Ingathering Mission in Israel. We must always re?member the Holocaust and never forget! He gave many details of the trip and the visit to the remains of the Concentration Camps. They had the opportunity to honor Righteous Christians. Eight participants went from Las Vegas, making increases in their pledges by 60% for a total between them of $47,000. Marv Perer spoke about the upcoming Connection Mission for community leaders and donors for a cost of $750 per person. This is normally for donors of $5,000 each, but this require?ment has been waived. We will be assisting with registration for anyone who may be interested. Soliciatation of partici?pants will take place in Israel. Donations will be expected, as the need for financial assistance is great. Judy Frank reportred on the recent General Assembly, held in San Francisco in November. She stated that over 3,500 comit- ted Jews from across our country and Canada participated. She said the G.A. was exciting and informative and provided diverse learning experiences. Judy facilitated at the Women's Division President's Forum (an honor and 1st for Las Vegas). She suggested that everyone who has the opportunity should attend a G.A. Marv Perer reported on the awards the JFLV received at the G.A., which included the following: Best Newspaper (with ads) The Jewish Reporter (Silver Award); Best Special Bro?chures: 1989 Israel Independence Day Brochure (Bronze Award); Rabbinical Award: Rabbi Louis M. Lederman, Temple Beth Sholom; Young Leadership Awards: Dr. Marina Plon, Hal Schuster, Jack Schuster and Dr. David Steinberg. Marv reported that the next event for the Maimonides Society would be held on February 17, 1991 with Dr. Heskel Haddad as guest speaker. Neil Galatz reported that the Brandeis Society would be hold?ing their next event on January 17, 1991 at the Golden Nugget from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., with Senator Richard H. Bryan as the guest speaker. The Governor's Council on Education relating to the Holocaust will be holding a major conference in Reno (April 23 - 24,JFLV BOARD MTG. 12/5/90 Page 3 1991) . Gene Greenberg reported on Yom Hashoah, which is to be held at Congregation Ner Tamid on Thursday, April 11, 1991 with Dr. Carlos Rizowy as the guest speaker. Sandy Mallin informed the Board that the Newcomers gathering was very successful. It was held at the Las Vegas Country Club on December 2, 1990. Daryl Alterwitz reported on the formation of Young Leadership '91 and the new minimum contribution for each participant of $54. He further stated that there are over 200 names of possible members. The first scheduled event will be the Mini Mission, held in our community to expose the group to the Synagogues and agencies available to them and receive a lit?tle background on them from various lay-leaders and profes?sional staff. Marty Loeb reported on the JFSA fund-raiser. Tickets for the drawing are still available and he has some. They are $50 each and the drawing will take place at the end of December. Marv requested everyone's assistance with the 1991 Annual Campaign. He further asked if everyone was aware of the months of January, February and March being our Primacy Period and the community's consideration and respect of this time period, by not holding other organizational fund-raising events then. It is generally observed across the United States by most Jewish organizations. A film (Igor & Olga) was to be shown at the conclusion of the business portion of the meeting; the film dealt with the Operation Exodus Campaign.
