Dr. Marvin Perer reported Campaign '88 was at the $675,000 level, which year to date is significantly above last year's campaign. Judy Frank then gave her report on the Women's Division of Campaign '88 stating that they have had a very successful year. They have held various activities with the main event luncheon being held Sunday, April 10. At that time the Women's Division raised $5,000 in new pledges. They have had an increase of $50,000, however, there is still $39,000 outstanding, most of which should be collectible. Arne stated that those working on the Campaign have been doing an outstanding job and without this type of support and effort to raise money there can be no benefit to organizations. Mike Cherry then presented the CRC report. The Holocaust Memorial Service which was held on April 13 at Congregation Ner Tamid was attended by not only many from the Jewish community, but also many non-Jews and he believes it to be one of the finest events of the organization. Norm Kaufman stated it was a very emotional service and was very pleased with the turnout. With regard to the Clark County School District problem the Federation has three priorities: (1) recruiting, of which several Federation members will be taking recruiting trips in the near future; (2) hiring, where we hope to obtain the same rights as Hispanics who have the privilege of hiring on the spot; and (3) promotion, which at this point we don't feel we are making much headway. The Federation is still taking a middle-of-the road attitude, however we are still dealing with blatant discrimination. It is felt the position of the Federation should be that until the discrimination matter is resolved the upcoming bond issue should not be supported. Within the discussion it was suggested that a staff person, other than Norm, should deal with the CCSD and it would not be beneficial for too many people to become involved and acting as spokesmen. Hal Ober and CRC Chairman, Mike Cherry, would be appropriate representatives with Norm Kaufman participating in meetings, etc. With regard to Dr. Robert E. Wentz being in a very perilous position, Dr. Marv Perer was concerned that there might be a backlash on the Jewish coTTmunity. Dan Goldfarb, a former school board trustee, did not feel the Federation would be blamed if Dr. Wentz was terminated as he has had ongoing problems within his organization through the years. Arne thanked Mike for the job he has been doing and since Mark Goldstein has gotten the CCSD's attention, we are hoping for the best. Dorothy Eisenberg, in her report on Project Renewal, stated that Las Vegas has a commitment, together with Phoenix and Orange County and that Las Vegas has not lived up to its commitments. The program must be renewed and money raise. There has been $567,000 pledged with $322,000 collected, leaving $245,000 cwing. The Ashdod programs need support and workers are needed to help collect the outstanding pledges. People are depending on Ashdod and the Federation's help and support is needed. Arne then stated that money has been designated to purchase land and it is necessary to begin formulating plans as to land use and location before there is a chance the money might be taken away. Hal Ober, Norm Kaufman and Arne went to Green Valley to look at 20 acres of undeveloped land which they believe hasBOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING OF 4/20/88 Page 3 very good possibilities. It would probably be necessary for the Federation to provide offsite improvements. There are various possibilities for use of the land, including a community center, day care (senior and preschool), Synagogue, Hebrew day school, all of these need to be considered, but it is time to get busy and do something about purchasing land at an affordable price and using it for purposes that are useful and make sense to the Jewish camtunity. Marty Loeb inquired about the cost of the land and the direction Las Vegas is taking. Arne replied that all aspects need to be considered and hopefully something could be brought forward at the next meeting. Arne then introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Priscilla Kostiner, UJA consultant for the West and Southwest. She has been on the staff for 2 1/2 years and enjoys working in the Las Vegas area. She stated that the Jewish communities need to build and make themselves strong - not setting unrealistic goals, but to work with the Federation, help raise money and build within the community, whatever needs are important to the Federation. Board members introduced themselves to Priscilla and each gave a brief background of themselves, their work and history with the Jewish community. Mrs. Kostiner suggested that all the meetings should begin with D'vor Torah. She stressed the importance of the Federation participating in the UJA programs and utilizing its experience to help build within the Federation. She asked for our participation in missions. The serious matter of problems of the West Bank and Gaza are to be addressed at the meeting in San Francisco on May 12. Tourism in Israel is being greatly affected. Mrs. Kostiner was available after the meeting for answering other questions. Marty Loeb reported on the walk-a-thon sponsored by B'nai B'rith Men which will start off Israel Independence Day, Sunday, April 24 at Inter-Expo. Dick Schoemann stated the walk-a-thon was to begin at 10:30 a.m. and would be from the Inter-Expo to the Post Office and return. There would be return rides for those unable to go but one direction. Ron Lurie and Rabbi Akselrad will be leading the walk-a-thon and there is to be media coverage. It is expected that close to a 1,000 people will participate. Beverly Eisen said volunteers are needed to man the Federation booth to greet the public and hand out literature. Irving Steinberg reported on the upcoming 4th annual golf tournament to be held Wednesday, May 11, at the Painted Desert Country Club. It will kick off with breakfast and registration. There will be a luncheon, raffles, prizes and awards. The entry fee is $175 and to date they have 80 participants with reservations to close at 100. The two open tees in need of sponsors were filled by Lenard Schwartzer and Gerald Welt. Dr. Edward Teller, physicist, will be a speaker as a part of the Eugene Warner lecture series Monday, April 25, 1988 at 8:00 p.m. at Ham Hall on the UNLV campus. There are no tickets and Federation members are invited guests. This should be a very interesting program. Barry Eisen, the newly elected president of JFSA, reported that Harry Horberg had been presented with a plaque posthumously from his peer group of fellow workers. This was presented to his widow, Bobbie. There is to be an open house and installation of officers on Thursday, April 21, 1988 at 6:00 p.m. at the JFSA office. The new officers to be installed are Barry Eisen, President,BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING OF 4/20/88 Page 4 Marty Loeb, 1st Vice President, David Funk, 2nd Vice President, Harvey Eisner, Treasurer and Isabel Goldberg, Secretary. Barry said that the adoption agency program is moving slowly, there are a number of parents but few adoptive children. The annual family picnic is to be held May 15 at Paradise Park from 11:00 to 3:00. Dr. Tamar Lubin-Saposhnik reported that 20 acres of land would be forthcoming for the Hebrew Academy. The Academy is planning a week-long trip to Washington D.C. May 15 for its graduating group. They will meet with Senators Hecht and Reid and Representatives Bilbray and Vucanovitch. Arne asked for any other business to cane before the Board, and there being none he stated the next meeting will be June 8, 1988 at 8:00 P.M. at the Federation office. At that time the Board will work on selecting the 1989 Campaign Chairmen. There being nothing further, Arne thanked us for caning and the meeting was adjourned at 9:10 P.M.
