A 1946 graduate of Las Vegas High School, Marv attended the University of Nevada at Reno, and received his Doctor of Optom?Marvin Sedway etry degree from Pacific University in 1954. He has been in practice in Las Vegas since then, and is noted for the thousands of volunteer professional hours he has devoted to serving the handicapped and underprivileged chil?dren of the state. ? Marvin Sedway Speaks Out On The Issues of 1982 TOURISM AND JOBS: In the 40 years I?ve lived here, I?ve watched our community grow 50-fold. The State of Nevada must take a more active role in helping the local business sector enhance and protect tourism and attract new, light clean industry to broaden our tax base throughout the state. We have much to offer, but the message must be hammered home to in?dustrial and business leaders on a national basis or we will continue to be a one industry city and state. We can?t afford that. UTILITIES: We must stop the alleged ?public? utilities from gouging the public they are supposed to be serving. The free ride the utilities have had in the past, with the multiple increases, is a disgrace. The Legislature is the proper vehicle to use to put a stop to this unconscionable abuse of the people. CRIME: To combat the nationwide cancer of the rising tide of crime, we must take legislative action to unify all the ele?ments of our criminal justice system. The surest deterent is swift and sure justice, with more and better police, judges and prosecutors on the job. Plea bargaining and early release of habitual criminals have forced too many honest citizens to barricade their homes with bars and alarms, terrorized by fear. I ask ? who then is the prisoner? .As a single parent I'm particularly concerned that quality education be available for all the young people of Nevada. My son Roger, 28, is a 1971 graduate of Valley High School and is an architect in Arizona. Stephanie, 21, graduated from Bishop Gorman High School in 1979 and is a student at U.C.L.A. as well as a newspaper staff member in Marina Del Rey, CA. Michael, 13, attends William Orr Jr. High. SENIOR CITIZENS: I would hope that all senior citizens could enjoy a life of dignity and without want, as do my parents, who are in their 80?s and 70?s and who serve as my role models for what I will work toward as a member of the Legislature. The state must face and accept its share of the re?sponsibility for helping its seniors avoid living out their lives in a demeaning or dire set of circumstances. My parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sedway, are very fortu?nate, because their retirement years have been secure and meaningful. I am sadly aware that is not the case with a majority of our senior citizens. EDUCATION: Something must be done about the de?clining level of achievement in our public schools. If our children are to have quality higher education available to them lo?cally, a more balanced funding method must be established. TAXATION: Nevada?s Constitution provides that the people must be given the opportunity to vote on any increase in sales taxes. I propose to roll back the oppressive 5.75% sales tax and let our Constitution work properly.
