I have enjoyed my first year as your president and look forward to continuing our good work WAYS & MEANS The goal of the Ways & Means committee is to create ideas, encourage particpalion^ greatly fundraising events throughout the year. Our fund raisers are an important part of ^ total budge^t of th^mpte ano g augment the ability for us to continue to provide all of the religious services, programming, facilities, staff, and day to aay operations. We rely on a select number of fund raising events each year. ? The Kol Nidre Campaign was a successfully chaired by Scott Stolberg and Bruce Matza ? Our Mensch of the Year event honored Maria and Tom Letizia and was co-chaired by Lisa Skurow and Sandy Stolberg. ? The Gift Wrap booth at the Galleria Mall was chaired by Beth Bowman and Volunteers contributed over 1,000 hours to the event. Special thanks to all who helped out! "Get Out of Dodge," our big Spring Raffle was launched in April with the winners chosen at the Annual Meeting. J The mission of CNTisto provide meaningful religious services, life-long Jewish learning opportunities, cultural programs and social activities in order to perpetuate and advance Reform Judaism. V RABBI AKSELRAD'S MESSAGE My House shall be called a house of prayerfor all peoples. Isaiah 56:7 As we enter the third year in our new building we are truly "home". Over the past few years many changes have taken place. Our membership has grown by over 200 new families. Our Preschool has blossomed to nearly 90 students. We began a 55+ Senior Social Group that provides a wonderful series of programs and activities on Wednesdays. Membership in our Sisterhood and Men's Club are at all time highs. This past year was one of transition for our religious school. Lonnie Kritzler did a wonderful job as our interim Principal while our search committee looked for a permanent director for our school. After interviewing Sr. Rabbi many candidates, we have engaged Rabbi Leonard Zukrow to become our rabbi-educator. He will begin Sanfordd. Akseirad ju|y i st ancj wj|| have a variety of responsibilities including directing the school, adult education, supervising our youth program and pulpit and pastoral duties, This will move our religious school to the next level and everyone is e xtremely excited! Rabbi Adar concludes her tenure as our "visiting assistant rabbi". For the past two years she has flown in monthly to teach, preach, console, and comfort our many congregants. She has developed a loyal following and has been of tremendous help to me personally. We will all miss her and know that her career will continue to flourish in her home community of the bay area. Challenges still await us. With the down turn of the economy we are faced with the ultimate irony. Our Temple and its services are needed now more than ever, yet more and more congregants find it difficult to support us financially. We are committed to making sure that those who wish to be a part of our community are not turned away for financial reasons. It is a value that requires everyone to do their part. Whether it is legacy giving and bequests to insure the future of the Temple or continued support of our building fund or becoming a menorah level donor that assists Temple members who have trouble paying their dues, it is our hope that those who can do more, will consider doing more now more than ever. The strength of our Congregation has always been the partnership of our membership and the staff. Together our Temple truly has an incredible variety of services, programs, and activities that touch people's lives on a daily basis. The following is a partial list of what we have accomplished in the past year: * Greeters at the Membership Table every Friday after services. * "Prospective Member" Shabbat services in the late summer prior to High Holidays for those who are "Shul Shopping," * "New Member Coffees", graciously held in the homes of Andrea Harris & Stacey & Steve Lewis to welcome our newest members. * Chardonnay Shabbats for the Young Adult Community (YAC) * Honoring Sonny Spiwak as our "Congregant of the Year" in conjunction with the "New Member Shabbat" * Annual Temple picnic & Havdallah service at Mt. View Park * Two "Presidential Receptions" on our patio?one to welcome new members in the fall and more recently, one to honor and thank ALL of our wonderful Volunteers! * Twice yearly calls to our membership to wish them a happy Passover and a healthy & happy New Year! VP RITUAL - DEL ACOSTA The Ritual Committee works in partnership with the Rabbi and Cantorial Soloist in developing a vision for worshipa nd ritualfor the congregation. The goal is to continue to provide a place for worship, study and special programs. Here are a few highlights from this past year: * Rabbi Adar's continued service to our congregaiton as our Visiting Rabbi, teaching classes and assisting in the Religious School * Began to use the Mishkan Tefillah on a more regular basis at Shabbat services * Hired a full-time Assistant Rabbi/Educator as Principal of the Religious School, as well as assist Rabbi Akselrad with pulpit duties, lifecycle events, the conversion program and more * Shabbat morning service continues to grow * Donation of tapestry for bima by David & Juanita Wasserman (created and designed by Jeannette Kuvrin Oren) * Shabbat services are now ONLINE! Perfect for those who are homebound, traveling or otherwise unable to attend 55+ SENIORS' GROUP - JOYCE HERLANDS, SENIOR ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR This group meets twice a month, participating in an array of activities - speakers, luncheons, table games, movies, Yiddish, BINGO - with participants ranging from age 55-85. Here are just a few of the great activities from the first year: * Celebrated 1 st Anniversary with lunch and music by Jewish Jammin' Band * Numerous guest speakers including a Health Insurance Advisor, a former Las Vegas Showgirl, and Channel 8 Paula Francis * Yiddish Group, Table Games, movies, a Sing-Along, many potluck lunches * Day trips to Charleston Heights Art Center for plays * Special Chanukah Celebration with entertainment, including guests, the Pre-K class from our Preschool * Oil painting class, digital photography classes, line dancing, Mah Jongg * Numerous multi-generational events throughout the year with the children in our preschool When you recite blessings and praises, imagine that you are standing before a king, and he says to you, 'Let me hear your voice'. Sefer Chosidim 158 CARING THROUGH MUSIC & SONG When I look bock and reflect (which time does not permit very often) I am amazed at all during the past year here at CNT... I love it!! I I have a great sense of accomplishment for the past year mu programming and look forward to another exciting year at CNT. Last December 1 st, we participated in the "World AIDS Day" candlelight vigil. Our Adult Choir and I sang beaut'^' songs of peace and tolerance, along with choirs and singers from other faiths. It was very moving. On Decemb r/f|l y>il 13th we had our Second Annual Shabbatone Concert. Over 300 of you attended this event that helped to raise fill much needed money for the music programming at CNT. Thank you all. c",Zriat soMst As we come into the summer months, I also want to recognize some individuals for their hard work and dedication. First I'want to thank Lillian Kollar for her amazing talents and incredible musical ability. She is one of the best accompanists I a worked with and I greatly appreciate her. Thank you so much Lillian! Thank you also to Maxme Mol.nsky for tending her vo ce throughout the year at services. I must thank all of the members of the Shabbatones band, who volunteer their talent and put ah their energy into this program: Ira Spector, Jay Poster, Glori Rosenberger, Alan Molasky, Eddie Birch Tracy Birch (and Matthew Birch tool), Brad Torchin, Mike Adler, Shawn Bailey, Bruce Geller and Paul Kessin. Without all of the"^enthusiasm a hard work, there would be no Shabbatones. We have grown together as a band (more like extended family) and as friends. More music, concerts and special events are planned for the coming year... stay tuned. Thank you also to Lon Frankl for conducting the Hiqh Holy Day Teen choir accompanied by Eddie Birch. Thanks to Sherri Swezey for conducting the Youth Choir throug the year with the Youth Choir accompanists Jacob Mann and Rebecca Mann. A special thank you to parent volunteers Christina Primack and Francessca Hoffman for all your help with the Youth Choir. They've never sounded better. And speaking of choirs, our fabulous Adult Choir deserves a round of applause for their hard work over this past year (since High Holy Days) you all are the best A special thanks to John Smith the Adult Choir Director for his wonderful ability to have the choir sounding their best with wonderful accompaniment by Lillian Kollar. Thank you to all the choirs. Our Adult and Youth Choirs sang consistently throughout the year. These programs have become well established and we continue to welcome new members and grow throughout the year. I want to acknowledge the hard work and talents of a lot of people here at CNT. First I want to recognize the wonderful people that we have in the office. Karen, Lynette, Laura, Linda and our wonderful CNT volunteers... thank you all. Thank you to our wonderful Facilities, Catering and Rental Director Roberta Unger, Program Director Beth Bowman and Executive Director Nancy Weinberger. The building has had its challenges but we have a great team of people who keep things running smoothly. Roberta and her staff, thank you for your hard work and flexibility. Thank you also to Lois Bergman, Ayelet Blit and Adam Brustein for their wonderful job of tutoring the B'nai Mitzvah students. They continue to do an outstanding job and I continually receive positive feedback from the parents of our students. This tru ly has been a year of exciting growth. Sheldon Low Concert at CNT FOR THE SAKE OF HEAVEN VP SOCIAL ACTION - BRETT PRIMACK Tikun Olam is to repair our world one mitzvah at a time. There are many opportunities, as you will see below, to make a difference throughout the year and we encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and help as a community, one mitzvah at a time! These are just some of the things we did. * School Partnership Program with McCaw Elementary School in Henderson - collected clothes, school supplies * "Just 1 More" Food Drive - collecting records pounds of food for the Henderson Food Bank * Mitzvah Day with over 250 registered volunteers * Host for Family Promise - Family Promise assists families in the Las Vegas Valley to transition from homelessness to stability. Partnering with faith houses and community orgranizations, they compassionately provide guidance, food, shelter and education * High Holy Day Food Drive * Inter-Faith Seder * Annual Mitzvah Menorah for Chanukah * Political Forum to complete the work, but to desist from it. PIRKEIAVOT CHESED COMMITTEE - SHIRLEY KOUFFMAN, CHAIRPERSON The Chesed (Caring) is a group of wonderful members who reach out to our CNT congregants and extended Jewish Community in a ways to bring cheer and support! For Chanukah and Purim, 80 cards were sent out. * College students were sent something to help celebrate Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, Purim, and Pesach. CNT RELIGIOUS SCHOOL - While we've had some unexpected changes in leadership this year, we are grateful for the strong staff that stepped in. First, thank you to Beth Falk who has been our Interim R/S Principal tor the past year and a half, Beth had to step down mid-year when her husband became ill. We appreciate all that she has done during her time as Principal. Luckily, Lonnie Kritzler, Director of Early Childhood Education, was willing to take over until the end of the school year. She has many years of teaching experience in all age groups, from toddlers to teens. She began overseeing the Sunday and Hebrew classes, as well as Gesher and Confirma?tion, all while running the preschool at CNT. Thank you also to our teachers and staff who stuck with us and gave it their all. Much was accomplished this year, including ending our year with 195 students: ? Fun Passover Programming for all grades ? 8,h Grade Torah Trek Hike with Rabbi Comins NTTY (NER TAMID TEMPLE YOUTH) JOLIE BRISLIN, ADVISOR The high school youth group (9-12th grade) known to most as NTTY is a ffiliated with the Southwest Region of the North America Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY-SW). NTTY offers fun and thought provoking programs twice monthly. NTTY programs range from social, religious, social action and cultural. NTTY also leads High Holiday Teen Services. NTTY is a lead by a youth board of students involved. NTTY trave ls 4 times per year to meet with 280+ other high school students to touch upon different issues and to just have fun with other Jewish Teens. TNT...IT'S EXPLOSIVE (TEENS OF NER TAMID) The goal of TNT is to involve young people, grades 6-8, in social experiences to strengthen their relationships with each other, with the CNT family and with the Jewish community. Activities include Lunch & a Movie, King Putt Golf and more. ITTY BITTY NTTY (ITTY BITTY NER TAMID TEMPLE YOUTH) BECCA PHILLIPS, ADVISOR This youth group is geared towards children in grades 3 through 5 and meets monthly during the school year. Various activities include a trip to the Springs Preserve, Movie & Pizza Party, Kid's Lounge Day, Bowling, Bounce-U Party, plus much more. Morah Dyana's 3rd Grade Class THE GARY & LYNN KANTOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CENTER Lonnie Kritzler Early Childhood Director I am happy to report that our third year of preschool was a rousing success. Some highlights of the past year: ? A total of 91 children attended our preschool - 23 two year olds, 35 three year olds, 24 four year olds, and 9 young two's. ? A total of 57 children attended our summer program - 15 two year olds, 18 three year olds, and 24 four & five year olds. ? Tot ShabPat has never been better. An average of 35-40 families attended every month. (Thank you, Sisterhood, for funding this wonderful program). ? Our Pre-Kindergarten students and the 55+ Seniors Social Group had a number of programs together. It was wonderful seeing the different generations working together, especially with making our intergenerational quilt! ? Our Pre-Kindergarten classes, the Yeshiva Day School 1st & 2nd Grades, and Midbar Kodesh's Kindergarten class met at ONT to plant and celebrate Tu B'Shevat together. It was beautiful seeing Reform, Conservative and Orthodox children play and learn together. ? Our fundraisers were very successful. There was our Little Hands, Big Heart Gala, booths at the Chanukah Bazaar and Purim Carnival, selling Kantor Early Childhood Center t-shirts and hoodies, and the creation of our very own cookbook. ? The children learned about and participated in many Jewish holiday celebrations. They attended Children's Services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, decorated the temple sukkah, marched through the building with their Simchat Torah flags, light the chanukiyah and made latkes for Chanukah, planted trees and flowers for Tu B'S hevat, dressed up and paraded for Purim, entertained their families at our Pesach Model Seder, and sang Happy Birthday while eating birthday cake for Yom Ha'atzmaut. ? The children are beginning to read, add, subtract, and learn about their bodies. More than anything else, though, they LOVE coming to school! The Kantor Early Childhood Education Center staff and volunteers need to be recognized and commended. Without them, our school would not be what it is. The teaching staff is: Shana Volenti, Sherri, Swezey, Nicole Fletcher, Shawna Witt, Diana Friedman Ramirez, Maggie Milton, Teresa Owens, Marisa Kohen, Anne Bruno and Suzanne Greenberg Mendoza. Our wonderful volunteers are: Ellen Sonenthal, Maxine Gratz, Pat Gorman and Anne Sandell. Last, but not least, everything we do would never work if it wasn't for my fantastic Administrative Assistant, Laura Bailey. Lastly, thanks to our amazing Early Childhood Education Committee led by Julie Barto-Fisher, whose vision, caring, passion, and leadership is surpassed by none. Her dedication to our school has led this incredible committee in achieving so much in such a short time. The ECEC Committee members are: Alicia Walsh, Alison Clark, Aria Cheney, Christa Emmer, Denise Fanning, Jennifer Morss, Jodi Kurtzman, Kelly Knapp, Kim Bateman, Nicole Steidel, Shana Volenti, Sharon Carnaby, Shelly Herst, and lllisa Polis. We also appreciate and thank CNT's VP of Youth and Education, Jacky Rosen, who has taught us well and helped move us far along in a very short time. Yes, this has been quite a year?one filled with learning, hugs, and lots of happy children and parents. And now, on to year four where we are looking forward to offering even more to our youngest generation! ...and you shaii teach them diligently to your children... Deuteronomy 6:7 COMMUNITY & PROGRAMMING building community culminates in strong, active partnerships. building community is smart, responsible, strategic, and collaborative BUILDING & GROUNDS COMMITTEE The Building & Grounds committee meets regularly to assess the state of the campus, it's buildings and equipment. The committee has been responsible for oversseeing the maintenance, and deal with any difficulties that may arise, Committee members are architects, civil engineers, property managers or members of the construction industry with valuable skills and fields of expertise. Areas the committee is focusing their efforts on are: * Setting up systems and processes so that we are not dependent on a single person. * Energy & Expense Management * Safety & Security * Capital Improvements & Reserves * Develop Facility Expertise * Developing Resources * General Maintenance Issues A weekly walk through of the facility & grounds is conducted to update the maintenance schedule and determine the areas needing immediate and/or future attention, ensuring that the facility is safe and secure for our staff, congregants and the community. Amy Spector Fund - Established by Nanette & Ira Spector in memory of their beloved daughter Amy, this fund is used to help the youth of our Temple attend a URJ Jewish Sleep-away summer camp. Over the years, they have helped to enrich the lives of several of our young people by giving them the joy of a Jewish camp experience. Dr. Gary & Lynn Kantor Early Childhood Education Center - Dr. Gary & Lynn Kantor created a fund which will contribute annually to our preschool for play equipment and educational toys, as well as other supplies to insure our preschool is fun, safe and exciting for our youngest children. Leon H. Friedman Youth Scholarship Fund for Jewish Leadership & Values ? Established by Norma Friedman in memory of her beloved husband Leon, this fund is used primarily to support student participation in Panim, the Institute for Jewish Leadership and Values. This unique program brings Jewish high school students from across the Jewish religious and educational spectrum, to Washington, DC to learn about political activism and civic engagement in the context of Jewish values and principles.
