So what are you doing about it? Sometime ago, the chancellor of an American University asked the head of his Philosophy Department to go to the airport to pick up a guest speaker who was to receive an honorary degree at the commencement exercise of the school. The guest was Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschell, a famous theologian and philosopher. The head of the Philosophy Department was a European Jew, completely assimilated. He had been married to from and divorced from a non-Jewish woman and had no real interest in the Jewish community. When he heard the petition of the chancellor, the professor was a little disturbed, so he asked him: "I have been teaching in this University for 20 years -why are you sending me to the airport?" to which the chancellor responded: "Well first of all, you are Jewish so I thought it would be nice for you to pick up Rabbi Heschell, and most important, you are the head of the Philosophy Department." Dreading the moment, the professor went to the airport to greet the guest. On the way back they started to talk about philosophy. The professor was really astonished. He couldn't believe that Rabbi Heschell was so bright and had such a deep comprehension of deep philosophical dilemmas. When they were about to reach their destination Rabbi Heschell asked the professor if he were Jewish to which the professor answered in a very dry and curt way, "Yes, I am Jewish." Heshell then asked him: "So what are you doing about it?" "I never thought about that!" answered the professor. Then Heschell said softly: "I suggest you do." The professor went to Heschell's conferenc. He noticed a young woman sitting next to who was fascinated by Heschell's words - they began to talk. She told him she was Jewish and a widow and that she was very much interested in the conference. The professor invited her to have a cup of coffee so they could discuss what they had just listened to. For many weeks they continued to meet while he was still thinking about the question: "Are you Jew- ish?" "So what are you doing about it?" One day he received a gift through the mail from Rabbi Heschell. It was a Siddur, a Tallit and Te-fillin. He compromised with the idea of changing his life totally. He now is an active Jew, very much involved in the activities and daily life of the community. This is the end of the story, but I know you are not satisfied. "What happened with the young widow?" The professor married her and, as far as I know, they are very happy. At this very sacred time I would like to raise the same question to you: "Are you Jewish? So what are you doing about it?" It was Heschell himself who said that: Every Jew is a messenger, a messenger of a great tradition, and the tragedy of the modern Jew is that he or she is a messenger who has forgotten the message. What are we doing about it? Well, let's consider some of the possible answers: First: One of the holy tasks that we as Jews are commanded by God to do is to attain knowledge. We Jews represent a great paradox. On one side, we are among the people who receive the best education in this country. The majority of our young people study at the best universities. But next to the fact that we have a great education, we are also the most ignorant regarding Judaism. That is why the New Age Judaism cults that offer a quick fix for our spirit through the teaching of pop mysticism, and so many other cults are able to flourish among us. "Are you Jewish? So what are you doing about it?" There is a second attitude. Not only should we attain knowledge but we should also recognize our common destiny. A Jew is a Jew, and has a share in the destiny of his or her people. This has been proven every time we have been subjected to persecution. Therefore, the conscience of having a common destiny should never abandon us. But what are we doing about it? There is a third alternative: We have to be able to give our lives, a meaningful Jewish structure. How so very many of us fail in this sense. I remember the anecdote of a man who visited Israel and went to the Western wall, the Kotel. He watched a group of people reciting their prayers. One of them approached him and invited him to join, to which the man responded: "No, thank you. I don't know how to pray!" The other man insisted, "Please join us we'll teach you how to do it," to which the visitor replied, "No, thank you." So then he was handed a siddur so he could pray on his own. He gave the siddur back and finally, in a nervous tone, said, "You don't get it, do you. I am only a tourist." This has happened to many of us. We have become tourists inside Judaism. We don't want to know, we don't want to listen, we have simply been left outside of the great world of our tradition. We have forgotten the message. ? Your children have seen you dance at parties. Have they seen you pray? ? They have seen you light candles for an elegant dinner. Have they seen you light the Shabbat Candles? ? They have seen you have a drink. Have they seen you raise the Kiddush Cup on a Friday evening? ? They have seen you read novels. Have they seen you reading Jewish books? ? They have seen you pay your bills with a check. Have they seen you write a check for Tzedaka? What is the Jewish component, the spiritual structure in your lives? Are we messengers? What happened to our message? I would like to make a suggestion. We must act as Jews. How? I have a concrete proposal. In the Talmud, the Rabbis ask: "What is the most important action in life?" The answer is: Gemilut Hasadim!, acts of loving kindness, to worry about someone else's troubles, about our community. It means to be able to reach out and touch a soul. It means comforting the bereaved. It means being part of a Hevre Bikur Holim (a group for visiting the sick). It means being part of a Hevre Kadisha (a burial society). It means making a Minyan at least once a week. It means coming to shul to pray on Fridays or Saturdays. It means worrying about the elderly. During this High Holy day season I want to reach out to every single one of you. I want to address anyone who is willing to give some of his or her time, but most important, some of his or her soul. I want to reach all of those who are willing to change not only the situation of our community but also are willing to transform their own souls and their own lives. Next year at this time we will have already moved into our new home, and will be praying in our new Sanctuary. As we prepare to face our future, we have to be prepared to meet the challenge that only one generation per half century is able to face - the challenge of growth, of transformation, of renewed life. I am trying to reach out to every single one of you because if you are tall enough to be a member of our Temple you must be tall enough to face the challenge of our future, as part of a people, as part of a community, as part of a congregation. Do you know the difference between a living synagogue and a dead synagogue? A Living synagogue is constantly changing, a dead synagogue doesn't have to. A Living synagogue's expenses always exceeds its income, dead synagogues take in more than they spend. A Living synagogue is constantly thinking about the future, dead synagogues worship their past. A Living synagogue is filled with tithers, dead synagogues are filled with tippers. A Living synagogue dreams great dreams, dead synagogues rehearse nightmares. A Living synagogue doesn't have "can't" in its vocabulary, dead synagogues have nothing else but. A Living synagogue like ours is filled with people like you who are willing to do something about being Jewish. You know, there is no blessing for performing acts of loving kindness. We have blessings for apples, pickles, and for the moon. But there is no Bracha for acts of loving-kindness and for facing up to the responsibility of building our future. Because the mere act of doing good is in itself a blessing. Today, because we feel the hunger that many millions feel every day around the world. Today, because we feel weak and not mighty, today because we feel that we can be better, that we should give of the best within us, today because we feel that we should respond. Today, because we pray so that the warmth and the faith we are feeling during this season may be with us at every moment. Today, because I hope that every word that comes out of my heart enters your heart. Today I ask you. Are you Jewish? What are you doing about it?? 3 TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM RABBI FELIPE GOODMAN poia irr /2 om'D 21 n Dear Friends: I am writing to you regarding a few of the changes that we will be experiencing this year during our High Holy Day Services. Perhaps one of the most important changes that we have made this year is the placing of the Yizkor Service immediately following the Torah Reading Service. In the past we held the Yizkor Service in the afternoon. We now have returned Yizkor to the place that it traditionally has always held within the structure of Yom Kippur. Please keep in mind that Yizkor will be starting at approximately 11:15 a.m. and it is no longer going to be held after a break. Therefore, it is difficult to pinpoint its exact time. If you are planning to attend Yizkor, I urge you to be in the Sanctuary no later than 11:00 a.m. Another important change in our service will be the inclusion of an old ritual. During Musaf for both days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur the Cohanim will go up to the Bimah and perform one of their sacred obligations, that of Birkat Cohanim (Priestly Blessing). This particular element of the High Holy Day, and other Holy Day services, has been absent from many conservative congregations for many years. We have decided to include this in our services so that all of us who have never seen it before will have a deeper understanding of our traditions and rituals as part of the Jewish people. Please note that the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat. Therefore, the Shofar will only be sounded during the second day of Rosh- Hashanah, which is Sunday September 12th. I encourage everyone to attend the second day of Rosh Hashanah as our services no doubt will be meaningful and spiritually enhanced by the powerful call of the Shofar. Please remember that at the conclusion of the Neilah service we will include all the children in our beautiful Havdalah. Don't miss this very powerful moment which promises to enhance our spirituality and sense of belonging. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy and healthy year 5760. During the training session Rabbi Goodman will go over all the ritual and laws dealing with this ancient and beautiful tradition. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to get in touch with your heritage ! 7 For thirty years the University of Judaism has presented an "Introduction to Judaism" course which has been attended by non-Jews and Jews who are interested in learning more about Judaism and the heritage and traditions of the Jewish People. The "Introduction to Judaism" will be offered jointly by Temple Beth Sholom, The University of Judaism and Hillel at UNLV. Our program is a very special and comprehensive one, It provides people with a deep understanding and knowledge of the basic ideas and practices of Judaism as well as the background to live a full and meaningful Jewish life. They spent a day and a night in the farm of a very poor family. When they got back from their trip the father asked his son, "How was the trip?" "Very good Dad!" The father asked, "Did you see how poor people can be?" "Yeah!" "And, what did you learn?" The son answered, "I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden, they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lamps in the garden, they have the stars. Our patio reaches to the front yard, they have a whole horizon." When the little boy was finishing, his father was speechless. His son added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are!" Isn't it true that it all depends on the way you look at things? Our goal is to transmit to the children that Judaism is not only a religion, it's a way of life. Paul will enter 8th grade at Becker Middle School, where he has achieved good grades. He plays roller hockey for his school and also is an active participant in baseball, ice hockey, skateboarding, wake boarding, and body boarding in the ocean. Paul likes to spend time listening to music and playing on the computer and video games. He has a special quality in helping and caring for young children.
