ART AS LIFE. LIFE AS ART. J. Seward Johnson, Jr. "Personal receptivity is, in fact, the only measure of art appreciation one can have. So public art, to succeed, must speak in a voice that can be heard by a cross section of society." J. Seward Johnson, Jr. The Green Valley Outdoor Sculpture Museum was established by American Nevada Corporation in 1984. Its goal is to provide a large audience with an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy fine art as an integral part of daily community life. The Museum, which is part of a community arts pro-gram that rivals the finest in the United States, has a strong acquisitions and exhibition program which focuses on the work of American sculptor J. Seward Johnson, Jr. and other well-known artists. "Teatro XI" by I lerk van Timgeren "In the end, Johnson gives us ourselves. And we seem to enjoy that look in his mirror. His clues to the familiar also serve as a reminder that we need ? and perhaps deserve ? art that lives out of doors..." Sally Freidman, After Dark Specially chosen for their unique, life-like quality, the full-size, bronze figures created by J. Seward Johnson, Jr. celebrate the warmth of the human spirit with familiar poses and gestures from everyday life. The largest collection of Johnson's work anywhere in the world, the sculptures are silent participants in the daily lives of passersby, sparking an immediate response from all who see them. Other renowned sculptors represented in Green Valley's permanent collection include Lloyd Hamrol, Alan J. Seward Johnson, Jr. Osborne, Lita Albuquerque and Lee Sido. This represents the largest collection of sculpture in the Las Vegas area. The Green Valley Library plays a major role in the community's cultural experience through rotating exhibitors featured in its public art gallery. In conjunction with American Nevada Corporation, the library sponsors several shows each year. Sam Francis is one of the internationally renowned artists who has shown work here. In order to help visitors and residents learn more about the art on display in Green Valley, American Nevada Corporation has created The Sculptor Information Center. There, visitors can read about the making of a Seward Johnson sculpture, find out about upcoming exhibitors and more. "Looking at sculpture teaches people to use their inborn sense of form, to improve their own surroundings, to make life marvelous!.. ."
