HA DAS SAH Hadassah Happenings Hadassah Southern Nevada Chapter Co-President's Message L'CHAIM, TO LIFE! Those words aren't just the toast from Fiddler On the Roof. They're a template for Jewish living and the theme of Rosh Hashanah. In synagogues throughout the world, Jews will recite the following plea on Rosh Hashanah: "Remember us for life, O King who desires life, inscribe us in the book of life." Maimonides, the 12th century Torah sage wrote that the blasts of the shofaraxe life's wake up call. They're a reminder to smell the coffee and concentrate on real living. The shofar's blasts ask us "How did you live last year and more importantly how will you live this year?" Hadassah answers the shofar blast with a 100 year history of making miracles everyday occurrences. What did Hadassah do last year and what shall Hadassah do next year? It will continue healing, teaching and research. It will continue to choose life for friends and enemies, strangers and family. It will continue to do so, because of you, the Hadassah member who will ensure its future with your work, your financial resources and your creative energy. Le shanaTova and L'chaim, to life! Elaine Entin & Barbara Raben Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower Patient Room Campaign Update As of the end of July, we are a bit over 10% of our goal to equip a room in the new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower. We can only achieve our goal by all of us working together. Although 100% participation is a lot to ask, we are optimistically working towards that goal. Even $5 gives you a stake, though more goes a long way if you are fortunate enough to be in a position to give more. If you would like one of the commemorative items shown on the gift card enclosure and cannot make a single gift in the applicable amount indicated, your gifts towards the Tower Campaign through May 2013 can accumulate towards that goal (while supplies last at National). Please let me know if you need additional gift cards. It falls on the first two days of Tishrei, the seventh month on the Hebrew calendar. The month of Tishrei is when G-d created the world. Hence, Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the world. Jewish tradition teaches that during the High Holy Days (known in Hebrew as Yamim Nora'im or Days of Awe) G-d decides the fate of each individual in the coming year. And so, from Rosh Hashanah until the conclusion of Yom Kippur, Jews embark on the serious task of examining their lives and repenting (doing Teshuvah) for any wrongs they have committed in the previous year. In this way, Rosh Hashanah is all about making peace in the community and striving to be a better person. Rabbi Judah Ben Tema used to say: "Love and revere G-d; tremble and rejoice when you perform the commandments. If you have done a little wrong to your neighbor, let it seem to you large. If you have done a big kindness, let it seem to you small. If your neighbor has done to you a big evil, let it seem to you small; if your neighbor has done to you a small kindness, let it seem to you large." (Avot d'Rabbi Natan 41, 67A)Customs and Symbols: The Shofar, made of a ram's horn is blown 100 times during each day of Rosh Hashanah. Its plaintive cry reminds us of the importance of self-reflection during this important holiday. Tashlich, a ceremony which means "casting off," involves symbolically throwing away our sins of the prior year by tossing bread into a body of flowing water. Other significant symbols of Rosh Hashanah are apples, honey and round loaves of challah. Apple slices dipped in honey represent our hope for a sweet new year and are accompanied by a short prayer that goes: "May it be Thy will, O Lord, Our G-d, to grant us a year that is good and sweet. Here are two sweet and easy recipes for Rosh Hashanah. Enjoy! Shana tova u'metukah. Shoshanim Special Interest Group Happenings We need one or two of you to step up and volunteer to coordinate the monthly Hadassah Shoshanim Ladies' Dine-out. As you all know, this is a wonderful group that has been meeting for years on the second Tuesday of the month at a local restaurant, where we nosh, kibitz, and enjoy each others' company in a small group setting. We are asking for one or two of you to step up and volunteer to continue this group. The work involved is minimal: choose and reserve the restaurant, send out notices, and assist in the raffles ("opportunities") which raise money for Hadassah, and convey information about upcoming Chapter events. I will even be glad to continue sending out the emails, if you so desire. If you are interested in being the coordinator, or want more information, contact me at lmichels2@cox.net or 869-9088, or Sherin Garber at sherinqarber@cox.net or 221 -1370. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Shoshanim Book Club meets every six weeks on a Monday night at 7:00 PM, at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore, 8915 W. Charleston (SE corner of Ft. Apache/Rampart). The coordinator is Bernardine Zaben, who can be reached at queen809@vahoo.com for more information. You can also contact Lynne Michels at lmichels2@cox.net if you would like to be placed on the email notification list. Our next meeting will be October 22, when we will be discussing "Unorthodox," by Debbie Feldman. This is a brief description from a review of the book: "In this arresting memoir about growing up in?and ultimately escaping from?a strict Hasidic community, Deborah Feldman reveals what life is like trapped within a religious sect that values silence and suffering over individual freedoms." We look forward to seeing our regular members at this meeting and welcome all new or prospective members to this bookclub. Mitzvah Opportunities from Randi Hi! I am Randi Lampert and I am the chairwoman of our Mitzvah committee. I would love to see more people in our chapter get involved in Mitzvah activities. We can only have about 10 volunteers each time and space is reserved on a first come basis. Please contact Randi Lampert at relampert@cox.net or 838-6099 for more information. We continue to provide volunteers for the JFSA Food Pantry on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Each volunteer usually goes about once a month. Anyone interested in joining us (we can always use more people for this project), please contact Sandy Schiffman at sandy.schiffman@qmail.com or 202-2318.
